Description
tnted tant @wat @inline Letters Patent No. 100,942, dated March 15, 1870; ntedatedallarch 11, 1870.
WATER-WHEEL REGULATOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'makng part cf the name.
To all whom it muy concern:
' Be it known that I, HERVEY D. Snow, of Bennington, in the county of Bennington, and State of Vermont, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Regulators for Water-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex'- act description of the said invention, reference Abeing had to the annexed drawing making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of' the said regulator longitudinally of the shaft; v
Figure 2 is an end elevation of said regulator; and
Figure 3 is al plan showing portions of the stops and gearing. y
Similar' marks of reference denotek the same parts.
This invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted me July 14, 1868, and reissued June 29, 1869. l n l My present invention has reference especially to an arrangement of mechanism that gives to the stops a slower movement, without necessarily varying the speed of' movement of the gate', so that more time may be given to the gate in moving, or the gate can be more fully opened or closed without varying its speed. l
I also provide means for adj ust-ing the parts to oompensate'any wear.
When the gate is to `be closed tostop the wheel, the regulator may he made to effect the movement, thereby the closing is ver'y gradual, and the ram action in the feeding-trunk is prevented.
In the drawinga' is the shaft that extendsto the device that is t-onnected with the gate to be-'operated upon.
b, the standard supporting the same.
f is the ratchet-wheel; and f his the disk, arms, or wheel, with a piu, m, that is acted upon by the lever to the governor, and provided with a pin, k, that passes into the curved slot in the stationary plate l.
Around the shaft and its sleeve n is the lmb of' the pawl-carrier o, that is continuously oscilla-ted bythe connectingrod p and crank on the shaft 1], that is re volved by a connect-ion to the shafting.
These parts thus far described are substantially the v same as in the aforesaid patent, except in the particulars hereafter named.
' 28, so that the pawls maycommenee prompt-ly to act upon the ratchet-wheel f when there-is any change of speed, or for determining the point at which the governor commences to act on the ratchet-wheel. This disk h might, however, he made of one piece, with a notched edge, instead of having the flanges 27 and 28 separat-ely,
Instead of the stops g g heilig. applied to the side of' the wheel f, as in the aforesaid patent., they are attached to the wheel w, that sets loosely around n.
These stops can be attached at any desired position on this wheel u', and perform the same duty of'lifting the pawls froln contact with the wheel f,when the gate has been fully opened or closed to the minimum point; but I cause these stops g gto be broughtaround less rapidly than before, and this I effect by a slow revolving motion being given to vthe same by means of' the gear x on the shaft or sleeve n, taking the wheel y, that in turn acts by the pinion .z ou the teeth around the periphery of the wheelfw.
lf the wheel 'u' were attached to the sleeve n it could have but less than one revolution before the stops y or q' would lift the pawl and stop the gate-shaft af; but, by placing the wheel u.' loosely on the sleeve. n, and applying theY gearing as aforesaid, the shaft a revolves any'desired number of times,.according to the relative size "of the gearing x y z, while the wheel 'u' is revolving once, thus giving more time and consequent further movement to the gate before the stops g or g' act, without necessarily varying the speed of' the gat-e, which should he as rapid as practical to work the parts.
'lhe ratchet-wheel f should he small as possible, to get the required strength and leverage, and the wheel w mustbe. smaller; than j', to bring the stops g and y' under the pawlsr s; consequently, if the wheel -u' moves at the same speed as shaft a, the range of' adjustment ofthe stops g y' and the movement ofthe gates are limited, while, by applying the gearing to slow the wheel w, without 'altering the speed of sleeve n and shaft a, the range of adjustment and movement is not limited by the size -of the parts.
1f the speed of' wheel zo and shaf't a were as one to five, the gate would move five times as long as when the speed ofw and a were the same, land the gate could move five times as far.
\ To facilitate the use of this regulator, the tube or sleeve n ext-ends from one side to the other, so that the shaft a may be led off in either direction to the wheel, and two shaft-s may be employed, rmming oli' in opposite direct-ions tot-wo gates and wheels.
'lhe usual arrangement for closing the gate byhand may he provided if desired, the same acting to revolve the shaft (a This method of closing the gate should he retained and be available, as it may become necessary to close it suddenly, on account of dcrangemeut of machinery; but to prevent back action of the water it should be shut o gradually, and I make the regulator available for thatpurpose.
The lever v and arm ru may be employed to bring the regulator into action in closing the gate, when said p lever 'v is moved by hand to turn the disk h, .by taking against the pin k, instead of its being moved by the governor by change of speed. Thisenables the attendant-to` bring the regulator into action in closing the gate or gates by the revolution of the shaft q and and pawls, so that the action of stopping is very gradual, the attendant is relieved from a tedious duty, and risk of nj nry to the trunk or feeder by the ram action in closing the gate suddenly is avoided. lhis lever v may be operated by a cord running to any convenient part of the building, or by any other suitable means.
WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is s I. The stops 27 and 28, attached adjustably to the disk or arms h, in combination with the ratehet-wheel f and pawls r s, as and for the purposes set forth.
