Description

partsf dinittdtatet WILLVIAM eAinusoN, or oLAnKsroWN, `NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 100,747, dated March 15, 18,70.
IMPROVEMENT IN MECHAICAL M OVEMENTS. Y
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same Be it known that I, WILLIAM GAnRIsoN, of Clarkst'own,in the county of Rockland, and/State of New York, have invented anew and improved Mechanical Movement; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe artto make and `use 4 the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s fcrmnlr )art of this s ecitication.
i g o l. .Y p Figure 1 represents a vertical` transverse section of i my improved mechanical movement.
Figure 2 side view, partly in section, .of the same. y v Figure 3 is a plan or top viewof'the same.
Figure 4 is a detail side `view of .the same, showing its parts ont of gear. d, v
` Similar `letters of reference indicate corresponding AThis' invention relates to a new mechanism 'for con# verting oscillating into rotary motion, and is chiefly .applicabley to machines for elevating, or conveying heavy loads by `means of ropes or chains wound upon or unwound from `rotating drums. i y 'lhe invention consists in such a combination of a 'pivoted lever `with double pawls vand two rotating Vgeared'drums that at every oscillation of .the lever .theldrums are both rotated in opposite directions, the motion of each drum being continuous as long as that of the lever is carried on.
llhe invention consists, also, in so pivoting the lever that the same can, with b oth pawls, be readily thrown ont-of gear. y A,zinrthe drawing, represents a frame, which sup-k lports two parallel arms 'or shafts, B C, that are' geared together by. means of toothed wheels a b, mounted fupon' themV respectively. The drums are thus so connectedthat when one isturned the other will revolve in au opposite' direction.
'lo the frame is secured, equidistant from the axes of thetwodrums and parallel with the same, a pin, c, which serves as a pivotvfor a lever, D.
To the lever D are pivoted, by separate pins d e,
two pawls, E and F, which` project respectively toward the two drums, catching with their points into the teeth of ratchet-wheels f g, that are respectively moxinted upon the said drunisand whose teeth are in opposite directions, as shown.
It is evident that as the lever is rocked on its pivot it will carry the pawls alternately against the two ratchet-wheels and apply motion inopposite directions to the two' drums. But as by the gearing together of the drums their motion is' already made to be opposite, the regular motion of each is merely kept up by the alternate action ofthe two pawls. Thus the oscillation ofthe lever serves to revolve continuously two drums, the revolution of each servingduring haltl y the time to produce that of the other, and et'ce 'vcr-sa.
The aperture of the lever D, where the same embraces the pin c, isenlarged at one end, as shown in g. 2, so that the lever can be leaned oblique-ly, as in iig. 4. Vhen thus inclined, the lever holds the pawls/ out of gear and llows the ropes or chains on the two drums to unwind.
A brake, G, may be' arranged on one or both the said drums for regulating theunwinding motion.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the lever D'and pawls E F with the drums B C, toothed wheels a b, and ratchetwheels fg, all parts being arranged so that the oscillation ot' the lever will produce continuous rotation of botti drums in opposite directions, as set forth.
2. The lever D, which carries the pawls for rotat-`- Witnesses:
