lip ncati'onmed-lty 1e,-'*1911.' Serial Note-27, 865
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLDO PIZZUTIEDDO,
a' subject of'the Kingiof Italy, and aresi' dent of New York, 1n the county? of'New York -and State of New York; have'invented' certain. newend useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the l following is a speci-' fication, taken in connection with the ac-' companying: drawing, 1 which forms a part of the same.
This invention relates to *hat' pin s and more particularly to one which will securely hold ai-hat on the head oftlie user, though" permitting. the ready withdrawal of the "hat vpin when it is desired-to remove the hat;
In the accompanyingidrawingshowing an illustrative embodiment of my invention, and in. which the same reference nun'ierals refer 'to sim-ilarparts in tl ie-several=fig'ures,' Figure '1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the hat pin showing the; locking member in its operative positionj-Fig'. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectionillustratlng the lockingmeinber in its inoperative position;
and Fig.1?) is a fragmentary plan 'view of section.
Inrethe illustrative embodiment of any in vention shown in the drawing,il 1Sf8.. ha:b"
in formed'ofa hollow bod memberQ'h-avingca point 3 which is pre erably'arranged at a an angle tothe body member." Within this body-member I mount a l'ockingmeniber 1 having a point'5 which'is adaptedfto be forcedthrough theopenin {6 of-the=body member. This locking; memer4:-may be variously formed but "I preferably form it fromu-wlre and bendone endto form an" arm 7 by :which the point 5 ofthe'lockingf memberis either pulled" into its inoperative positionf within the body" member 2, FigrQ, or is caused to pass throughtheopenmg 6 and; assume its operative position, 'F1g. 1
In :use I the :body member "2 with the look- I tingsmember' in-itsinoperative position is forcedthroug'hthe hair of the-user and after thehatand hat pin have been roperly fosi tioned; pressure upon the arm-- .iirtheireetion-of the .point 3of the hat p nywlll cause theqlocking' member 4 to I slide withim-the' body-member and forcethe' ointfi 'throu n. the opening 6;,thereby.}provi ing thehat-p 11* pin showing the head in with vtw'o p'ointspreferably arranged at an angle to each other. It is obvious that any .ull upon the h'at pin or upon the hat,iwill 'e resisted: not" only by the fixed point 3 of. thefhat pinbut also byfthe removable point 5 which will practically insure the hat pin staying m its adjusted position on the head of" the user. v
I preferably, though not necessarily; bend the en'd-5 of the virefin' the opposite directionfrom the point 3 so that when it' is j forced through the opening Git will assume substantially thepo'sition shown in Fig; 1. I also preferably providethe body member :2 at one end with athimb'le 8" which may be secured" to'the' body member in any 'mah not but preferably by screw threads ,9
head maybe glass, metal or any other suitable-material; and may be given any suitablecontour for purposes of ornamentation.
I By" ayof example I have shown the head spherical and provided with screw threads 12t0'co6perate with threads 13 upon'the end of the'thimble 8, thefparts being screwed .togetherfuntilthe head contacts with th shoulder 14 on thethimble.
' The parts can be readily afssembled by.
screwingthethimbleS upon the body mom 'ber; then 'inserting thelookiug member 4.
within thebody member Qbrh gi'ng the operatingarm 7 into register vith'the slot 10.
'[U on "then screwing "the headfll on thethlmble'thepartsuwill all be locked together and prevented "from accidental displacement.
Having/I thus described this invention "in I connection with an illustrative embodiment 'thereof 'itwthe"details of which I do not desire'to 'b'e'limited, what is claimed as new and whatit is desired to. secure by j Letters Patenty is' set iorth :in the claim The combination in a'hat pinioffa hollow body member provided with} an opening" near its point, a movable locking member arm in one of the positionsfm which it with mounted /w1th1n the body member and the locking member '15 movable.
adapted to be extended thrmwh the open- I I, r
ing and having an operating ei m, a thimble LL01 OLDO 1 IAAUHELU) mounted on the end of the body member and Vitnesses:
provided with a tapering slot, the walls of ALAN M. JOHNSON,
which are adapted to frictionally hold the ROSE MENK.
