ANDREW THOMAS HOLDER, OF WAGO, TEXAS.
CIGAR-BOX CLIP.
Application filed May 31, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW THOMAS HOLDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to clips and more particularly to a clip or clamp that will serve to hold the back of a cigar box back on to the box so that the same will be tilted to an angle that will suitably display its contents.
The object of this invention is to provide a clip for the purpose noted above, and also to have it arranged so that it will afford a means for indicating the price, or other desirable feature about the contents in the cigar box.
A further object of this invent-ion is to arrange a portion of the clip so that it may be used as a handle for raising the box for any purpose whatever, at the same time to have means on the clip which will be ar ranged to clamp the box more tightly as the same is lifted.
A further object of this invention is to have a device constructed of one piece of material so that it can be cheaply manufactured, and so that there will be no parts that will need continuous inspection or repair.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as it is more fully set forth.
The keepers of stores have much difficulty in properly displaying cigars and such articles which are contained in boxes, because of the difliculty of tilting them at a suitable angle without requiring some particular provision to be used underneath the box, the same often involving much trouble and expense and being by no means positive in its action.
By the use of the device hereinafter described in the specification and indicated in the drawings, it is possible to use the same on a box, and which will hold the cover firmly to the back portion of the box, and arrange the same so that it will be tilted at a desirable angle when the same is put on a shelf or counter case, at the same time by suitably stamping the upper portion of this holder one can readily indicate the price of the contents in the box, or a further description that the device may warrant. By providing pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

jecting points on the clamping portions of this device it is possible to have the same particularly suitable for its use as a box raiser, because these projections will prevent the clip from slipping, and the indicating portion of the clip which is bent at a desirable angle will afford a substantial means for lifting the box.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example an embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of a clip embodying this invention applied to a cigar box, and Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the clip.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In the construction which illustrates this invention 1 represents a main back of the clip which is preferably constructed of a rectangular piece of metal, and which has its upper portion 2 rounded and bent as is clearly shown in the drawings. The portion 3 of the clip adjacent to this rounded portion 2 is bent at an angle from the main portion 1 of the device, and is stamped with a price figure or other suitable indicating mark. The lower or main portion of this clip is provided with a slot 4 the material of which is bent at right angles to the upper portion of the part 1 for a short distance in front of the clip, in order to provide space to permit the insertion of the cover and back of the cigar box, and then the remaining port-ion of this piece is bent parallel to the main portion 1 of the clip, and its lower end 5 is beveled off to a point and bent inwardly.
A portion of the material is left on the bottom of the slot 1 and cut to a triangular shape and bent toward the piece of material 4-. which is derived from the slot 4:, so that this pointed end which is designated by the reference character 6 will engage with the back of the box as is clearly shown in the drawings, and also the pointed end 5 of the piece 4: will engage with the cover of the box, thereby forming a suitable means for catching the box, in addition to the elastic action which the main portion 1 of the clip and the piece of material 4' have on the cover and back of the box.
When the clip is used it is placed upon the box, by inserting the clip upon the cover and back of the box, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. When the clip is in position the lower pointed end 6 and the end 5 of the elastic piece 4 disposed in front of the clip, dig into the woodwork of the box, so that when the clip is raised the same will cause the whole box to be raised at the same time. The size of the clip is made to elastically engage with the cover and back of the box, and in itself clamp tightly thereon. The upper portion of the clip is stamped with a suitable indicating mark and the end portion above this indicating portion is bent so that the clip will not slip from the hand of the person raising the box by this means, and gives it a more secure hold than could otherwise be obtained without marring the appearance of the clip. These clips require so little material, and can be so readily stamped up and manufactured that their cost is practically insignificant, and makes them particularly desirable for the uses illustrated above.
Obviously while there is shown but one form of this invention in the drawings, it is not desired to limit this application to that particular shape or in any other way otherwise than necessitated by the prior art,
'is claimed A clip for a cigar box comprising in combination a rectangular piece of material having its upper portion rounded and bent inwardly and having the portion adjacent to said end' portion bent angularly to the main portion of the clip, a slot provided in the main portion of said clip and having the material therefrom bent partly at right angles and partly parallel to said main portion and having its end portion pointed and bent inwardly and a projection formed at the main portion of said slot pointed and bent toward said pointed ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
