BORING-TOOL FOR SHOE HEELS AND SOLES.

Be it known that I, MICHAEL F. CREAHAN, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve.- ments in Boring-Tools for Shoe Heels and Soles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a tool designed especially for boring holes for wear-studs in shoe heels and soles, and is intended to facilitate the insertion of heel and sole reinforcements claimed in a concurrent application. The tool is so formed that, when properly used, it bores holes of uniform depth, and of a size to cause the studs to fit tightly therein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the tool, and Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations, in the latter the tool shown as when boring. Fig. 4 is an outline of the tool as stamped from a metal plate. Fig. 5 shows a shoe bored with the improved tool and studs applied thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the tool body is formed preferably of a piece of sheet steel and may be conveniently cut or stamped with suitable dies to form the flat body portion 2, having reduced shank portion 3, on'
which is fitted handle 4. Body 2 is narrowed by opposite shoulders 5 to form bit or boring portion 6, having at its extremity centering projection 7, and at opposite sides thereof the curved and reversely beveled cutting edges 8. Faces 9 leading to shoulders 5 may also have their edges sharpened to facilitate the boring operation.
The tool being designed primarily for boring holes A. for wear-studs B in shoe heels C and soles D, the length of boring portion 6 determines the depth of the hole, shoulders 5 arresting the inward progress outer ends flush with the surfaces in which they are set.
The invention is embodied in a very simple and convenient hand too-l which may be readily operated by anyone, and which automatically determines the depth of the hole, and in the case of a shoe sole, prevents boring too deep or entirely therethrough. And by thus gaging the depth, studs made standard therewith will always fit. v
The facility with which the tools may be formed by stamping them from plate metal greatly cheapens their manufacture, so that they maybe profitably sold at comparatively low price.
I claim In a tool for boring a hole of uniform diameter in the wearing surface of a shoe, a rotatable flat body of metal reduced in width at its lower end to form a cutting portion, the width of said portion corresponding to the diameter of the hole to be bored and the length of said portion determining the depth of the hole, said narrowed portion having opposite parallel edges and the lower extremity of said portion sharpened for cutting, the body above the narrowed portion extended laterally at opposite sides to provide stop forming shoulders which limit the depth of the bored hole, and a handle for the body.
