SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Paten-t No. 693,914, dated February 25, 1902.
Application filed June 27, 1901. Serial No. 66,217. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, RILEY A; SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellefontaine, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bits; and I do declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention. relates to improvements in bits, and particularly to improvements in counterboring-bits. Its object is to form a bit whereby the bore and counterbore are made at the same operation.
A further object is to provide a counterboring-bit with means to regulate the depth of the hole bored. j
A further object is to form a counterboringtool wherein the bits are adjustable relative to each other.
A-further object is to provide means whereby both bits will be clamped in the socket by a single operation.
With these and other objects in view my invention is hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure l is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 Z'of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the stock of the bit is indicated at 6, the bore-bit at 7, and the counterbore-bit at 8. The bit 8 is longitudinally bored to receive the bit 7, which is longitudinally adjustable therein. In the stock 6 is a beveled screwthreaded socket 6a, adapted to receive the eXteriorly-screw-threaded shank 8fL of the bit 8, and centrally of the socket 6a is a deeper socket 6b, adapted to receive the shank 7a of the bit 7. Lo'osely mounted upon the stock is a sleeve 9, within which the stock may revolve. The sleeve is adj ustably retained upon the stock between collars 10 and 10, mounted upon the stock and capable of being secured thereto by set-screws 11. The lower collar 10CL is located within the sleeve in a recess formed by an outwardly-offset portion 9a of the sleeve. The lower end of the sleeve extends below the stock and is adapted to form an adjustable stop to regulate the depth of the hole by contact with the work. The sleeve also forms a convenient handpiece when the bits are being driven.
The shank Eln of the counterbore-bit is longitudinally split, as indicated at 8b, whereby it is adapted to contract and bind the shank 7a of the bit 7. When the bits are set in position according to the depth of bore and counterbore desired, the bit 8 is screwed in, and the beveled socket causes the split shank to contract and tightly bind the shank ofthe inner bit 7.
It will be seen that `the bits have relative longitudinal adjustment according to the depth of bore and counterbore desired; also, that both bits are clamped in the socket at a single operation.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination, a stock, bore and counterbore bits held therein, said bits having longitudinal adjustment relative to each other, and a sleeve upon the stock which is rotatable within the sleeve;
2. In combination, a stock, bore and counterbore bits held therein, said bits having 1ongitudinal adjustment relative to each other, a sleeve within which the stock is rotatably mounted, said sleeve having'longitudinal adjustment upon the stock.
3. In combination, astock, abeveled socket in the stock, a counterbore-bit whose shank is adapted to engage said beveled socket, a main bore-bit, and a socket to receive the shank thereof.
4. In combination, a stock, a bore-bit, a counterbore bit having a beveled screwthreaded shank, and a beveled screw-threaded socket in the stock adapted to receive said shank. j
5. In combination, a stock, a counterborebit having a beveled split shank, a main bore bit extending longitudinally and centrally within the counterborebit and adapted to be clamped by the said shank, and a beveled socket in the stock adapted to receive said shank.
6. In combination, a stock, a bore-bit, a
stock, adjnstably held between the collars, a socket in the stock, and a bit held in the socket.
9. In combination, a stock, a relatively revoluble sleeve Ithereon, longitudinally-adjustable collars upon the stock to retain the sleeve, the lower portion of the sleeve being offset outwardly outside of and below the lower collar, and abit held in stock.
