To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoI-IAN GEORGE SPLIT- TORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bakers Shovels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.

lhis invention relates to bakers shovels and has for its object to provide a device of this type in which the handle shall always be cool, and in which the blade can be very easily and expeditiously removed when worn out. These devices are used by bakers for withdrawing bread, pies, and other products from the interior of the heated oven and the blade thereof isordinarily and preferably made of wood. The heat of the oven causes this blade to become scorched, cracked, and warped so as to necessitate its frequent renewal, and it is the object of this invention to provide a device of this type in which a new blade can be easily and inexpensively inserted and without the use of tools.

One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the device, parts thereof being broken away so as to show the interior construction; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the metallic reinforcing member; Figs. 4 and 5 are cross sectional views taken on the dotted lines H and 55 respectively, of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of a portion of the metallic member showing the pivoted dog in outward position.

Describing the parts by reference characters, my improved shovel comprises a blade 1, handle 2 and metallic reinforcing member 3. The blade consists of an elongated fiat board 1 having its forward edge suitably beveled'or tapered to permit its ready insertion beneath the articles in the oven, and the handle 2 consists of a narrow wooden bar of suitable length for use with the oven with which it is to be employed. The lateral edges of the blade are formed with shallow longitudinalrecesses 4 near the base thereof for a purpose hereinafter explained, and these recesses are continued across the rearward end of the blade, as

indicated at 5. The reinforcing member 3 consists of a Y shaped metallic casting or stamping having forwardly extending parallel arms 66 connected at their base by a transverse web 7 and having the stem thereof split or bifurcated to form a pair of separated plates 88 defining a space 9 adapted to receive the end of the handle 2. These plates 8 are of greater width than the web 7 and extend thereacross in the form of separated ribs 10, as shown in Fig. 2. The width of the branches 6 and of the web 7 is such as to permit them to be entirely received within the recesses 1 and 5 of the blade above mentioned, so that the hand of the operator may be shielded from contact with the metal.

In order to cover and shield the plates 8, I provide a pair of wooden cheek pieces 12 each of which has substantially the same thickness as the handle and is formed upon its inner surface with a recess 13 to receive the corresponding plate 8. The cheeks 12, plates 8 and handle 2 are formed with registering perforations adapted to receive bolts 14 by means of which the whole can be held firmly together. At their forward ends the cheek pieces 12 are carried substantially to the ends of the ribs 10 as shown at'15 in Fig. 1, the end of the cheek pieces being suitably notched to receive the web 7 and the rear end of the shovel blade is formed with a pair of transverse notches 16 adapted to receive these cheek pieces.

This construction provides a pair of thin tongues 17 at the center of the shovel which are adapted to embrace the web 7 between the ribs 10 and to abut against the end of the handle. Inasmuch as the thickness of the handle, cheeks, and blade is the same it will be seen that this expedient provides a very smooth, elegant and secure construction.

In order to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the blade 1 from the reinforcing member, I provide the extremity of each of the arms 6 with a pivoted dog 20 having a tooth 21 adapted to engage a socket 25 formed in the bottom of each of the recesses 4 above mentioned and having a terminal lip 22 which may be grasped by means of a nail, pencil or other suitable implement for turning the dog and releasing the blade. The abutting ends of the arms 6 and dogs 20 are overlapped without increasing their thickness,as shown in Figs. 2

and 5, and are pivotally connected by means of a rivet 28 or the like. With this construction it will be obvious that the blade 1 can be readily removed by disengaging the dogs 20 and drawing the same longitudinally from its seat, so as to permit the introduction of a new blade when the first has become worn out, or the substitution of a blade of different length or shape.

lVhile I have necessarily described my invention in detail I do not propose to be limited to such details except as the same may be positively included in the claims hereto annexed or may be rendered necessary by the prior state of the art.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A bakers shovel comprising, in combination, a handle, a branched metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof, and a blade having recesses in its lateral edges adapted to receive said branches, and means carried by said branches and detachably engaging said blade.

2. A bakers shovel comprising, in combination, a handle, a branched metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof, and a blade having longitudinal recesses adapted to receive said branches, and means whereby said branches may be detachably secured to said blade.

3. A bakers shovel comprising, in combination, a handle, a metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof and comprising a pair of forwardly projecting separated arms and a transverse web connecting said arms, a blade having recesses in its lateral side edges adapted to receive said arms and a recess in its rearward end connecting said first recesses and adapted to receive said transverse web, and means detachably securing said blade to said branches.

4:. A bakers shovel comprising, in combination, a handle, a metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof and comprising a pair of forwardly projecting sepa rated arms and a transverse web connecting said arms, and a blade having longitudinal recesses adapted to receive said arms and a recess in its rearward end connecting said first recesses and adapted to receive said transverse web, and means carried by said branches and detachably securing said blade thereto.

5. A baker's shovel comprising, in combination, a blade, a metallic reinforcing member secured thereto and having a pair of rearwardly projecting spaced plates, a handle fitting between said plates, a check piece on each side of said handle and having its inner face recessed to receive a correspending plate, and means securing said cheek pieces, plates and handle together.

6. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a blade, a metallic reinforcing member secured thereto and having a trans verse web to which are attached a pair of rearwardly projecting spaced plates, a handle fitting between said plates, a cheek piece on each side of said handle and having its inner face recessed to receive a corresponding plate and having a notch in its forward end receiving said web, and means securing said cheek pieces, plates and handle together.

7. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a reinforcing member having a pair of separated arms and a transverse web connecting said arms, there being a pair of separated plates carried by said web, said plates being of greater thickness than said web and extending thereacross in the form of parallel ribs, a handle secured between said plates, and a blade having recesses in its lateral. side edges adapted to receive said arms and having a recess across its rear end adapted to receive said web, said blade also having transverse notches in its rear end adapted to receive said ribs, said notches defining tongues adapted to fit between said ribs.

8. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a reinforcing member having a pair of forwardly projecting separated arms and a transverse web connecting said arms, there being a pair of separated plates car- ;ried by said web, said plates being of greater thickness than said web and extending thereacross in the form of parallel ribs,

a handle secured between said plates, and a blade having longitudinal recesses adapted to receive said arms and having a transverse recess across its rear end adapted to receive said web, said blade also having transverse notches in its rear end adapted to receive said ribs.

9. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a reinforcing member having a pair of forwardly extending separated arms and a transverse web connecting said arms, there being a pair of separated plates carried by said web, said plates being of greater thickness than said web and extending thereacross in the form of parallel ribs, a handle secured between said plates, a cheek piece secured upon each side of said handle and having a recess on its inner face receiving the corresponding plate, said cheek pieces extending substantially to the end of said ribs, and having transverse notches at their forward ends receiving said web, and a blade having longitudinal recesses adapted to receive said arms and having a recess across its rear end adapted to receive said web, said blade also having transverse notches in its rear end adapted to receive said check pieces and having tongues between said notches adapted to overlap said web between said cheek pieces.

10. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a reinforcing member having a pair of separated arms, and a transverse web connecting said arms, there being a pair of separated plates carried by said web, a handle secured between said plates, a cheek piece secured upon each side of said handle and having a recess on its inner face receiving the corresponding plate, said cheek pieces being of substantially the same thickness as said blade, and a blade having recesses in its lateral side edges adapted to receive said arms and having a recess across its rear end adapted to receive said web, said blade also having transverse notches in its rear end adapted to receive said cheek pieces, and having tongues between said notches adapted to overlap said web.

11. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a handle, a metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof and having a pair of forwardly projecting separated arms, a dog pivoted to the extremity of each of said arms and having an inwardly projecting tooth and a forwardly extending lip, and a blade having recesses in its lateral side edges adapted to receive said arms, and having sockets adapted to be engaged by said teeth.

12. A bakers shovel comprising in combination, a handle, a metallic reinforcing member secured to the end thereof and having a pair of forwardly projecting separated arms, a dog pivoted to the extremity of each of said arms and having an inwardly projecting tooth, and a blade having recesses in its lateral side edges adapted to receive said branches, and having sockets adapted to be engaged by said teeth, said dogs having means whereby they can be grasped and swung outwardly to release said blade.
