Specification of Letters Patent.
Patel] ted now-14, 1911.
Application filed December 16, 1910. Serial No. 697,728.
To all who'm'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tar/ran H. \VILKEN- me, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lapel-Buttons, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to lapel-buttons, or, more particularly speaking, to the means of fastening lapel-buttons or, for that matter, other separable two-part buttons in place where they are to be worn, and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening means that will enable the secure anchoring in place of all kinds of separable two-part buttons and especially those that are of considerable value when made of gold and other high-grade material and containing jewels of \m'ious..kinds.
The invention herein consists of an outr-ltlQ. or exposed member having a threaded rear shank centrally-extending therefrom and a rear or hidden member having a central i'1 ternallythrcaded nut or socket. part for the reception of said threaded shank and, also, havinga grooved girdle concentrically-extemling from said nut or socket part with a continuously-toothed ring engaging the grooved portion of said girdle, the rear or hidden member being adapted to be clamped or screwed into place on the back of the lapel or other portion of a garment to contain the button and with the nut or socket portion duly engaged by the threaded shank of the outer or exposed member that has been placed in engagement with a hole or opening made in the garmentor object to contain the button.
The details of the invention will be fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a perpendicular perspective view of the device; Fig. 2, a plan view of the inner face of the back or hidden member; Fig. 3, a plan view of the outer face of said back or hidden member; and Fig. 4, a view of the device. showing the front or exposed member in elevation and the back or rear member in section, such section being taken on the dotted-line a, o of said back-member seen in Fig. 3. and a section of a strip of goods being shown between the two said members ready for ch sing or clamping engagement.
1 indicates'a disk 0 body ortion of the outer or exposed displ iy mem er of the device herein or, in fact. it indicates the button proper, and 2 i idica-tes a centrallyextending screw-threw led shank on the back or rear face of said di: k. The front face of the disk may be plain or embellished in any suitable manner to me 513 the purposes of the various forms of but1ons to which my invention herein is adapted.
3 indicates a central, internally-threaded nut having a number of radially-extending arms 4 and adapted to engage the screwshank 2 when the butt in is in place over the lapel of a garment or the part a: to be provided with a button.
5 indicates a circul: r ring or girdle, carried by the radial arn s 4, and concentric to the nut 33. The rim 0i this girdle is flanged so as to provide a circular walled seat or groove 6 facing inwardly toward the button 1 when the two members of the device are brought together :or use.
7 indicates a ring idapted to freely engage'within the said ,(ircular seat or groove 6 of the girdle 5 and )IOVldGd along its innor edge with a forwa idly-extending flaring flange 8. The outer edge of said flange 8 is preferably contii uously indented or toothed. as shown at 9, such teeth' being best made on the underc'it plan so that they readily enter the good; when the back-member of the button is dumped into place by rotating the girdle 5 and the central nut 3 cooperating therewith in clamping or drawing relation with t': as screw-shank 2. I have found, in PIflCtll e,that the continuous array of undercut tet th forms the best anchorage and is less likely to become accidentally released fron. place.
In use, it will be vei y readily seen that the clamping of the two main members of the button is effected alc mg the outer edge or girdle portion of the rear member, which is the best partof the device adapted for the proper clamping-engagement and for duly seating the back-member against any accidental release from the exposed display member. The radial arms 4 of the rearmember lie preferably on the same plane as the outer face of the central nut 3 and the outer face of the gin .le 5, there being sufligagement with the threaded shank of the exposed display member 1 of the button and said threaded shank is made of such length that it does notextend beyond the rear face of said nut when the back-member is in clamping engagement. When the toothed edge 9 becomes seated or engaged in the garment and the nut 3 is drawn up tightly, the ring 7 then clings or binds in the seat 6 of'the girdle 5 and serves as a jam or lock device, which is one of the essential features of my invention herein and provides an extremely safe fastening for buttons of all values,
I claim A lapel-button or the like comprising an outer or exposed display-member, an inner or hidden fastening-member, said outer member having a body portion or disk with a centrally-projecting rear screw-shank and said inner member having a central. internally-threaded nut adapted for engagement by said screw-shank, radial arms extending from said central nut, an inwardly-grooved rim or hollow girdle carried by said radial arms, a thin open ring carried by said hollow girdle free to rotate therein, an integral outwardly-projecting toothed flange provided on said thin open ring and both said outer and inner members being adapted to be connected in fastening relation over the part carrying the lapel-button with the said screw-shank engaging the said central nut and the said outwardly-projecting toothed flange of thethin open. ring engaging the inner face of the said button-carrying part.
