SEBASTIAN RANLEY AND JOI-IN A.
SCHIRACK, OF ST. HENRY, OHIO.
FOLDING- DOOR.
incassa.
To all whom if may concu/ri: y*
Be it known that we, SEBASTIAN RANLEY" and JOHN A. SCHIRACK, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Henry, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a door to form a portion of a buggy top, and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in the swinging door described and shown in our Patent No. 968,198, of August 23,1910.
The door illustrated in our above referred to patent comprised a. lower swinging por'- tion, which when the door is opened, 1s swung inwardly and upwardly to clear the front wheel. The disadvantage encountered in connection with this construction is that ,the swinging portion does not lie fiat against the body portion of the door but stands out and inconveniences the passenger when entering or leaving the vehicle.
An important object of this invention is to provide a door of the above character, having a portion connected to its lower end, which portion is adapted to be swung inwardly and upwardly to clear the front .wheel and which is so constructed that the same will correspond to the shape of and lie fiat against the body portion of the door, to occupy the minimum amount of space when the door is open.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of our improved door, the swinging portion thereof being in its lower position, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the swinging portion being in its raised position, and, Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, a door is shown, comprising an upper body portion 1 adapted to be secured to the top of a vehicle through the medium of hinges 2. This door is capable of oscillating in a horizontal plane in an outwardly direction, as illustrated in connection with the door Specification of Letters Patent.

shown in our Patent No. 968,193, of August 23, 1910. The body portion 1 is provided near its upper end with an opening formed therethrough, which is spanned by a section of glass 3 or other suitable transparent material. The door further comprises a triangular section 4, which is rigidly connected with the lower end of the body portion 1 and extends inwardly therefrom to form an angle 5 with said body portion. The door further comprises a swinging portion 6, formed of two sections 7 and 8, which are rigidly connected and arranged to form an outer angle 9, which is equal to the inner angle 5. The section 7 is triangular and is adapted to coincide with the triangular sect-ion 4, when placed thereon. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) The section 8 has preferably the shape, as shown, and is substantially vertically disposed when occupying either its elevated or lower position. The lower portion 6 is pivotally connected with the body portion of the door by hinges 10, which are suitably secured to the triangular sections 4 and 7, adjacent their abutting longitudinal edges. A strap 11 is provided, the upper end of which is secured to the buggy and the lower end secured to the section 8, as shown at 12.
Inthe use of our door, when the same is swung outwardly, the strap 11 will oscillate the portion 6 inwardly and upwardly to clear the front wheel. This portion will then occupy the minimum amount of space, the section 7 being fiat upon the section 4 and the section 8 lying flat against the body portion 1, which results from having the angles 5 and 9 equal.
We wish it understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing' from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described our invention, we-
