Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 20, 1910. Serial No. 572,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MoCANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Hypodermic Syringes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in that class of hypodermic syringes in which the needle is inclosed and protected by a cap that is detachably connected with the body or barrel of the instrument.
The attachment comprises the detachable needlecap, a case containing extra needles and wires for cleaning them, and a safetypin, or fastening, these parts being connected by chains, so that the case, cap, and syringe proper to which the cap is applied when the needle is not required for use, may be all suspended from the clothing of the physician or nurse and thus may be available for instant use.
The invention further includes a screw coupling for detachably connecting the needle and cap with the body or barrel of the syringe.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hypodermic syringe provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is mainly a sectional view of the cap and the screw coupling connecting the needle and cap with the barrel of the instrument. Fig. 3 is a section of the case for extra needles.
The barrel 10 may be constructed and provided with a plunger 11 as usual in hypodermic syringes. An elongated tapered cap 17 is connected with the barrel and a chain 19 is attached to a swivel 18 secured to the outer end of the cap.
A case 21, for extra needles and wires for cleaning them, is attached to the chain 19 by means of a link or eye applied at one end, and a safety-pin 20 is similarly connected by another chain with the other end of the case. The ends of the said case are provided with hinged closures 22 which permit convenient access to the interior wherein extra needles 12, having internally threaded caps 13, are arranged, as shown in Fig. 3.

The screw coupling before referred to is composed of a hollow body having a part 1 1 adapted to screw on the barrel 10, and a similar portion 16 on which the needle-cap 17 is screwed, and a still smaller portion 15 on which the needle-socket 13 is screwed, all
.as shown in Fig. 2. Such coupling thus connects the several parts, to wit, the barrel, the cap, and the needle, detachably, so that they may be quickly applied or separated from each other.
By means of my improved attachment, a syringe, together with the extra needle case, may be suspended from the clothing of a physician or nurse, so that when the syringe is required for use it is only necessary to unscrew the needle cap 17 which will then hang pendent, togethenwith the case. If it is required to substitute one needle for another, the case may be quickly opened and the requi r ed needle removed and attached to the syringe. The cap furnishes an efficient protector for the needle under all conditions, excluding dust, dirt, and other foreign substances, so that when the needle is sterilized after use, it remains ready for further use.
What I claim is The combination with the barrel of a hy-, podermic syringe and a needle and needle cap, of a screw coupling having an internally threaded portion adapted to screw on the barrel, a reduced portion on which the needle cap is screwed, and a reduced terminal portion on which the needle-socket is screwed, as shown and described, whereby the said parts are detachably connected but held rigidly connected when in use, as described.
