Description

V H., N. FOSTER Cigar "Piercer.
Patented March 15,1870.
N PEYEns Phalo lhhognahen wasnmgm. n.c.
ome N; FOSTER, or- EAST Lotters Patent No. 100,744, dated March 15,1870.
onnnnwron', nnonn ISLAND.
- CIGAR PIERCER.
, i The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Ta alliohonrit may concern I p 1 Be. it known that I, HORACE N. Fosrnm'of East Eree'nwich, in the county of Kent, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improve-' ments in Mechanical Devices for Piercing Cigars; and doher'eby declare the following to. be a full and correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, and to the letters and numbers of reference.
marked thereonfsiniilar letters and numbers being used in all the figures to denote the same part.
In these drawingsi Figure 1 is afront end view. I
Figure '2 is'a side View with the lance pressed down into the cigar.
Figure 3 isthe same-side viewwith the lance and spring up.
The nature'of mjy inifentionconsists in combining "and arrangingfitlm' device's necessary tor-piercing a cigar into a shapecohvenient to carry about the persou,-and. solthatrftliey may heused with facility and etiiciently, ahdfat the same-"time be made at a low cost. 1-
Y 1t is constructed s'fojllo s:
A is a spring, sheet metal, struck out and bent up in the shape shownuint figs. 2 and 3, the end .c being twisted one-quarter turnaround, so as to pass through the narrow slot g in the other end, and also that-the lance 0' maybe fastened to it more convent:
'ently, th'ough'the lance may be made of the same piece of metal, by pointing the end that is twisted and bending it down flat at aright angle to the other part.
The other end of the spring A is bent into the shape of a letter ,S,,. the lower bend of which serves to hold. the cigar j, and the upper 'part, as before stated, has
a slot to guide the end of spring and lance.
: In using the apparatus, the cigar is placed in the position as shown in section by the letterj in figs. 2 and 3,v when by pressing the upper and lower parts of the spring together with the thumb and forefinger, the lance 0 will be forced into the cigar, makinga out across the fibers, forming an opening not so liable to be closed when wet as if itwere cut lengthwise of the cigar.
By releasing the spring, the lance will be drawn out of the cigar, which may be turned partly around, and the operation of piercing be repeated as often as may be'thought necessary, 7 7
Having thus described my improvement,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
The combination and'arrangement of the spring A, lance f0, andth'e cigar-holder and guide, substantially as herein set forth and for the .purpose specified.
" HORACE N. FQSTER.
