To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. JEFrREYs, a subject of the King of England, residing near Vindsor, in the State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Steam-Separators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has relation to an improved form of apparatus, external to the boiler, for drying steam by separating therefrom the water entrained in the same.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of means of the character above described whereby the steam while passing from the boiler is divided into a number of parallel streams or currents and wherein the water is extracted from these currents separately, and so conveyed away as to prevent its being reabsorbed by the steam.
My improved apparatus is relatively inexpensive and is so constructed that all its parts are easily accessible for repairs and replacement.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of the device and Fig. 2 is a plan view of one half of the collecting ring.
The preferred device shown consists of a retaining vessel or tank 10 having an entrance opening 11 on its side and an exit opening 12 preferably at the top, above the entrance.
ithin the tank I place a bent pipe sec tion 13, one end of which registers with the opening 11, while its opposite end is'turned downward toward the bottom of the tank, and away from the exit opening 12. I prefer to provide a bolt lat and bracket 15 for the better support of the pipe section 13.
The lower extremity of the section 13 is provided with a collecting ring 16, provided with a circumferential collecting channel or channels 17. Across the ring 16 there extend a number of bars 18, provided with collecting channels 19 communicating preferably with the channel or channels 17. Atproper intervals the channels 17, and 19 are pierced by openings 20, preferably screwthreaded from which preferably depend the drip pipes 21.

these extend upward substantially parallel to each other, being curved (as shown in Fig. 1) to correspond to the shape of the section 13, and so as to form parallel narrow passages facing the current of steam as it enters at the opening 11.
As the main broad current of steam rushes in at 11, it separates into smaller divisions of decreased mass, thereby greatly increasing the proportion of collecting surface to the total mass of steam, and at the same time serving to subject each relatively small steam current to an efiicient drying action. This drying action is produced by the superior inertia of the water, and its greater tendency to adhere to the surfaces of the collecting plates. As each divided steam current rushes forward, it impinges upon one of the collecting plates 22 and, as these serve to divert the streams sharply into a new direction at right angles to the initial course, there is set up a centrifugal action which forces the water into contact with the plates 22 to which it adheres, trickling down into the channels 19 and 17 and finding its way ultimately into the drip pipes 21, whence it drops into the bottom of the vessel 10. The opening 23 is provided to permit this water to be drawn off from time to time. The steam issues through the wide openings between the cross bars 18, and rushes out through the exit 12; and I prefer to employ the pipes 21, so as tolead the collected water safely beyond the range of the passing steam, so as to prevent its being taken up again thereby.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of my invention without departing from the scope thereof, and I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described.
What I claim is 1. A. device of the class described comprising in combination a retaining vessel having an inlet opening in its side and an outlet opening near the top thereof, a pipe arranged to direct the entering steam sharply away from said exit opening, means within said pipe for subdividing the entering current into a number of relatively narrow streams, and separate devices for collecting and leading away water associated with each of said narrow streams, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising in combination a tank having an opening in its side and an opening near its top, a bent pipe leading from said side opening toward the bottom of the tank, substantially parallel collecting plates within said pipe arranged to divide the steam into smaller streams side by side, and means associated with each collecting plate for carrying off water therefrom, substantially as described.
A device of the character described comprising in combination a tank having an entrance opening and an exit opening, a bent pipe leading from said entrance opening downward, a collecting ring having channels and drip openings at the lower end of said pipe and collecting plates extending upward from said ring, substantially as described.
4. A device of the character described comprising in combination a tank having an entrance opening and an exit opening, a bent pipe leading from said entrance opening and arranged to change the direction of the steam current, collecting plates within said pipe arranged to subdivide the current, and separate means associated with each of said collecting pipes for carrying away water therefrom, substantially as described.

comprising in combination a tank having an entrance opening and an exit, a bent pipe leading from said entrance opening and arranged to change the direction of the steam current, a collecting ring at the end of said pipe having channels and drip openings, and collecting plates associated with said ring and pipe, substantially as described.
6. A device of the character described comprising in combination a bent pipe for the steam, a collecting ring at one end of said pipe having channels and channeled cross bars provided with drip openings, and collecting plates carried by said cross bars and forming parallel passages for the steam, substantially as described.
7. A device of the character described comprising in combination a bent pipe for the steam, a channeled collecting ring at one end of said pipe having channeled cross bars provided with drip openings, drip pipes in said openings, and collecting plates fixed to said cross bars and arranged to divide the steam current, substantially as described.
