BELANB.
GAS WASHER. No. 487,279. Patented Deo. 6, 1892.
IINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED HAYES` LANE, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
GAS-WASH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,279, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed August 6, 1890. Serial No. 361,181. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED HAYES LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Washers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention` such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for washing gas; and it consists in a peculiarly-constructed nozzle constructed to form two diagonal diaphragms or unbroken water-sheets in the main gas pipe or conductor ordinarily used between the generator and the purifier of a gas-works, and is designed as an improvement of the nozzle shown in the patent for apparatus for Washing gas to Dye, dated January 28, 1890, No. L130,378.
The drawings represent in Figure l a longitudinal section of a gas-main provided with one of myimproved nozzles. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, letter A represents a section of a gas-main for conducting the gas from the generator to the purifiers, and B my improved nozzle. In the main A the nozzle B is secured by means of screw-threads 3 in a manner thought to be too well understood to require further illustration. A prismatic formation l) on said nozzle serves to facilitate the use of a wrench for fastening and unfastening the nozzle. The nozzle B extends into and slightly beyond the inner surface of the main A and is there provided with two narrow oblong orifices c c substantially parallel with each other and standing, essentially, transverse to the mainA. orifices also terminate at the inner surface of the main A.
From the portion or partition-C between the orifices c c of the nozzle B project two diverging Wings d d, which serve to deflect the water-sheets in a manner to which reference will be more fully hereinafter made.
The nozzle B is supplied with water under pressure secured from a highly-elevated res- The ervoir, force-pump, or other suitable source, with which it is connected by means of a pipe or conduit not herein shown and deemed to be too Well understood to require illustration. The water in passing through the slots or orifices c c of the nozzle B contacts with the diver-ging wings d d and is deflected diagonally across the main A, and thus two unbroken diagonal water-sheets o. d are produced, which strike the Whole inner surface of the main A and rebound in the form of spray. Through the Water sheets or diaphrams and the spray thereof the gas from the generatoris forced and being thoroughly mixed with the same is freed by the current and the spray of such impurities as readily unite with water, and it is at the same time cooled down to such a degree that the remaining tar and all the other impurities for which Water has an affinity are precipitated or concentrated and thereby separated from the gas. By employing diagonal water-sheets a much greater surface is presented to the gas and therefore a much thinner sheet may be used, which is desirable, especially Where chemicals are employed for purifying and are introduced through the wash-water.
I am aware that a nozzle adapted to throw a single diaphragm of water directly acrossa main gas-pipe has been used for washing gas, such construction being shown in the patent to Dye hereinbefore cited. Therefore I `would not claim, broadly, such construction; but
Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a gas-main, of a Water-supply pipe and nozzle, said nozzle projecting through one side of said main and provided with two unbroken parallel discharge-slots approximately at. right angles to the gas-main, and a Y-shaped partition located bet-Ween said slots and forming two inwardly-divergent members constructed to deflect the discharged liquid in sheets obliquely with relation to said main, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRED HAYES LANE. Witnesses:
FRANCIS C. BARTHoLoMEw, WM. M. HALL.
