To all lwhom 'it may concern;

Be it known that I, ERIC A. BERGGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oneida, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Husking Implements, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to husking implements, and more particularly to a husking implement adapted for the right hand of the user, and my object is to provide an implement which will be inexpensive and combine comfort and rapid and effective operation with minimum labor.

IVith this in mind my invention resides specically in the features of construction, arrangement and operation, to be hereinafter described and claimed, with relation to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, illustrating my improved implement attached upon a hand. Fig. 2 is a reverse elevation thereof removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under-side of the main palm plate, removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the supplemental palm plate, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the hand piece, with the buckles and plates removed.

Referring now to these figures, I provide a hand piece 1, which is usually formed of leather, and which tapers toward one end, and is intended to be fastened transversely across the palm 0f a hand, by straps which extend around the back of the hand. At its smaller end, the hand piece 1 is provided with a pair of buckles 2 and 3, secured by fastening means extending through its openings 4, while at its larger end said hand piece is provided with an inwardly extending intermediate opening 5, forming tongues G andl 7 upon the opposite sides thereof. The tongue 7 carries a buckle 8, secured through its opening 9, to extend toward its inner edge, and the tongue 6 is provided at its inner edge with an extending strap 10 which is adapted for engagement with said buckle 8, and when so engaged, locks the said tongues 6 and 7 around the users thumb as shown in Fig. 1. edge, the tongue 7 is provided with an extending strap 11, adapted to extend across the back of the hand and engage the buckle 2, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, buckle 3 being engaged by the outer portion of a strap 12, the inner end of which is se- At its outer cured to the hand piece 1, beneath the main palm plate 13. The hand piece also carries a pad 14, located upon the under surface of the tongue 7, and surrounding a portion of the opening 5, to prevent chang of the users thumb in the operation of the implement as hereinafter described.

The main palm plate 13 is secured upon the hand piece 1, by fastening members 15, through openings 16 and 17, with its larger end near the smaller end of said hand piece, and tapers toward the tongue 6. A shank 18 is secured upon the under surface of this plate 13, and is bent upwardly through a notch in one edge thereof, and is then bent forwardly and angularly and sharpened to a point in order to form a hook 19, which extends toward the user when the implement is secured upon the hand. This palm plate 13 is also provided with a central opening 20, and with an integral tongue 21 struck upwardly therefrom adjacent its smaller end. A supplemental palm plate 22 is provided at one end with a longitudinal series of openings 23, through a selected one of which is projected a small bolt and nut 24, extending also through the central opening 2O of the palm plate 13, and adapted to lock said supplemental plate to said main plate in desired adjustment. The plate 22 has also an intermediate longitudinal slot 25, upwardly through which the tongue 21 extends, to prevent plate 22 from moving sidewise, and the free end of plate 22 is provided with a small slotted opening 26, upwardly through which the strap 12 is threaded, after which said strap is passed through selected slits 27 in tongue 6 of the hand piece, before it is engaged with buckle 3. In this manner the combined length of the plates 13 and 22 may be readily and quickly adjusted to the width of the hand and, by forming a rigid band across the palm of the hand, will prevent the hand piece from pulling out of shape, and render the same more comfortable to the user and effective in its operation.

In the operation of the implement, an ear of corn is grasped and held by the left hand with its butt end inward, and the hook 19 is drawn inwardly through the husks until it reaches the butt of the ear, when the fingers of the right hand, following the hook, are then in position to grasp the exposed ear through the slitted husks and move the same upwardly and inwardly to break it loose from the butt which retains the huslis.

I claim:

A husking implement comprising a handpiece, a palm plate secured thereto and having a tongue, a husking hook Carried by the palm plate, a strip adjustably secured to the palm plate, said strip having a longitudinal slot through which the aforesaid tongue projects, a strap connected to the strip, said strap projecting from one end of the handpieee, and a fastening on the other end of the hand-piece for said strip.
