Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 5, 1911. Serial No. 631,439.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ODAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit and Vegetable Slicers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fruit and vegetable slicers operative to cut the material into slices the object of my invention being to provide a mechanism simple in its con struction, including few parts, adjustable in a manner to vary the thickness of the slices, and eflicient in operation. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the complete machine as seen in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the base of the machine and a slidable, open-ended, semi-cylindrical sleeve that is telescopically received by the vertical member; Fig. 5 is a cross section of the machine; Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the rotatable slicer and receiver detached from the machine; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail illustrating the lmife adjusting mechanlsm.
The same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
1 represents a semi-cylindrical base member, having a flange portion 2 at its lower end, said flange portion being provided with upturned edges 3 forming a receptacle for holding any dripping of liquid that may result during the operation of the machine and whereby the machine may be secured to a table or other support 4 by means of a clamping mechanism 5, the upper end of the base member being closed by means of a cap 6.
7 represents a semi-cylindrical open-ended receptacle-for material, that is adapted to receive the base member 1 in a telescopic manner, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and 8 represents a semi-circular shelf secured to the upper end of the receptacle upon its flat side, and provided with a radially arranged slotted opening 9 having an enlargement 10 at its outer end; the receptacle, when raised, forming a receiver for the material to be operated upon, the material resting upon the upper end of the base member 1.
11 represents a cylindrical receiver di vided into two parts near its diameter, having the ends of its side Walls overlapping each other and connected by means of rivets 12, that are secured to one part of the receiver and slidably received by vertically arranged slotted openings 13 in the other part, whereby the two parts of the receiver may be adjusted relative to each other.
The bottom of the receiver is provided with a diametrically arranged throated opening 14, and 15 represents a flat knife partially spanning the throat and provided at one end with a longitudinally arranged open-ended slot 16, that is adapted to re- 7 ceive the body portion of a screw 17 that cooperates with a cylindrical nut 18 in securing the knife to one of the parts of the bottom of the receiver; the opposite end of the knife being secured to the bottom by means of a screw 19 received by a laterally arranged open-ended slot 20 at one side of the knife. The knife projects beyond the wall of the receiver and is provided with a vertically arranged handle 21 that is secured to its outer end.
22 represents flexible levers having their lower ends pivotally connected with the side walls of one of the parts of the receiver and their upper ends provided with a series of openings 23 that are arranged concentric.
with the pivotal connection, and outwardly turned handle portions 24 whereby the levers may be conveniently manipulated. The lower ends of the levers are connected with the other part of the receiver at a distance from their axes whereby, when the levers are rocked about their axes, they will raise or lower one part of the receiver relative to the other in a manner to regulate the size of the throated opening in the bottom of the receiver and thereby the thickness of the slices severed by the knife. And 25 represents latch pins secured to the side walls of the receiver and adapted to be received by the openings at the upper ends of the levers in a manner tosecure the two parts of the receiver in any desired position of adjustment within the limits of the associated parts of the adjusting mechanism. The nut 18 is adapted to be received by the enlarged opening 10 at the outer end of the slot 9 in the shelf portion of the material receptacle 7, and is provided with an inner reduced portion that permits the nut to be moved inward to the end of the slot 9, and 26 represents a plate spring member having one end secured to the bottom of shelf 8 and its opposite end provided with an opening 27 that is adapted to receive the enlarged portion of the nut 18 in a rotatable manner.
28 represents a guide or shield secured to the lower end of the receiver and having the end thereof in the direction of rotation of the receiver turned upward in a manner to ride over the material in advance of the knife, the body portion of the guide resting upon the material as the receiver is rotated.
In operation the material to be sliced is placed within the receptacle, that is first moved upward upon the base, the material resting upon the upper end thereof. The receiver and knife are then rotated in the direction of the arrow, the sliced material passing through the throat in the bottom of the receiver, the thickness of the slice being determined by the adjustment of the levers controlling the position of the two sections of the receiver, and as the operation con tinues the receptacle gradually settles down, controlled in its movement by means of the guide engaging with the bulk of material therein. The parts of the machine are easily separated for cleaning purposes, it only being necessary to release the plate spring 26 from engagement with the nut 18, when the receiver may be moved laterally until the nut will pass through the enlarged portion of the slot 9 and the shell may then be removed from the base.
hat I claim as being my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged base member, a receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, a receiver rotatably mounted upon the upper end of said receptacle, and a knife carried by said receiver and adapted to engage with material placed within said receptacle.
2. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged base member, an open-ended receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, a receiver rotatably mounted upon the upper end of said receptacle, said receiver being divided into two parts along substantially a diametrical line, said parts being adjustable vertically relative to each other, and a knife carried by one of said parts and adapted to engage with material placed within said receptacle.
3. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged base member, an open-ended receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, a receiver rotatably mounted upon the upper end of said receptacle, said receiver being divided into two parts along substantially a diametrical line, means for adjusting said parts vertically relative to each other, said means including swinging bell crank levers upon opposite sides of said receiver, said levers having one end pivotally connected with each of said parts upon separate axes, means for holding the opposite ends of said levers in any desired position of adjustment, and a knife carried by one part of said receiver and adapted to engage with material'placed within said receptacle.
4. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged base member, a receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, the upper end of said base forming the bottom of said receptacle, and a combined slicing and material receiving mechanism mounted upon the upper end of said receptacle and movable bodily downward in a manner to operatively engage with material in said receptacle.
5. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged base member, a receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, the upper end of said base forming the bottom of said receptacle, and a combined slicing and material receiving mechanism rotatably mounted upon the upper end of said receptacle and movable bodily downward in a manner to operatively engage with material in Said receptacle.
6. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged semi-cylindrical base member, a semi-cylindrical receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, the upper end of said base forming the bottom of said receptacle, a shelf secured to the upper end of said receptacle, a receiver rotatably connected with said shelf, the bottom of said receiver adapted to swing across the open end of said receptacle, a knife diametrically ar ranged in the bottom of said receiver, and said bottom having a throated opening therein in advance of the edge of said knife.
7. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically arranged semi-cylindrical base member, a semi-cylindrical receptacle for material telescopically mounted upon said base member, the upper end of said base forming the bottom of said receptacle, a shelf secured to the upper end of said receptacle and extending outward from its wall, said shelf being provided with a radially ar 'anged slotted opening, a circular receiver, a knife arranged diametrically in the bottom of said receiver and having means whereby it is secured thereto, said means including a screw and a cylindrical nut, said nut being received by one end of said slotted opening in a manner to rotate therein, and releasable means for retaining said nut within said opening.
8. A vegetable slicer including, in combination, a vertically aranged semi-cylinto the side of said receiver and adapted to ride upon the material in said receptacle.
