Be it known that I, WVALTER S. ALvEs, citizen of the United States, residing at Henderson, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun- Stocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to gunstocks, more particularly to gunstocks whereof some portion has a special form and construction with a certain purpose in view.

This invention comprises a gunstock having a modified butt fashioned with the intention of allowing the person taking aim, to arrange his check more conveniently in proximity to the gunstock and to the line of sight of the gun.

As ordinarily made, gunstocks are formed for use against either the right or left shoulder of the user. A person who shoots from the right shoulder may thus use the same gun that would be equally available for a person who shoots from the left shoulder.

This invention provides a gunstock of certain formation for the person who shoots from the right shoulder, but, for the person who shoots from the left shoulder, another gunstock having like parts oppositely arranged is constructed.

The special construction and arrangement of parts comprising this invention are set forth in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a gun provided with a stock having a butt made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of a gun made in ac cordance with this invention, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line w-aa of Fig. 2, with the scale of drawing increased to more clearly illustrate the construction.

The same letter is employed to refer to the same part throughout the description and drawings.

The gun illustrated in the drawings is constructed for the use of a person who shoots from the right shoulder. It has barrels A, and stock B, provided with butt C. The comb of the butt is marked 0.

As best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, it will be noted that the butt of the gunstock has a relatively flattened side D, and that the greater portion of the wood of the butt lies on the right side of a vertical plane including the line of sight. It will be understood in this description that the expression vertical plane is intended to mean a plane that is vertical when the gun is held in aiming position, and the statement made in this paragraph just above, is intended to convey the idea that the greater portion of the butt lies on the right side of the plane, looking toward the muzzle of the gun. It will be understood, further, that the side D is not essentially absolutely flat. The requirement is that it shall be substantially a vertical side, or, that a portion of it shall be substantially vertical when the gun is held in aiming position. In fact, the side D may curve slightly, if the other necessary features of the construction are adhered to. That is to say, the side D may be of relatlvely less curvature than the other side, and, the most of the wood of the butt may be arranged as shown in Fig. 3, on the right side of the vertical plane passing through the line of sight when the gun is aimed.

Let it be assumed that a person brings the butt of the gun against his right shoulder into the position of taking aim. It will be now understood that his check will touch the flattened side D, and, as that side is purposely made near the vertical plane including the line of sight as stated, the eye of the user naturally falls on the line of sight.

As this invention is ordinarily constructed, the side D, which is practically a cheek rest as described, is so formed and located with respect to the vertical plane of the line of sight, as to suit the physical peculiarities of the individual for whom the gunstock is being made to order.

It is believed to be now apparent that, for the use of a person who shoots from the leftshoulder, the side D must be formed on the other side of the butt from the posit-ion shown in the drawings, that it to say, upon the right side looking toward the muzzle of the gun, and the greater portion of the butt would, therefore, be to the left of the supposed vertical plane including the' line of sight. By the expression line of sight in this description is meant the imaginary line running lengthwise along the middle of the gun, and passing through both front and rear sights.
