To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. Hess, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlesvillc, in the county of Washington and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds and particularly to that class of beds which may be folded to occupy a small space when it is desired to transport the same, and it may be contained in a case or bag as desired.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed constructed in accordance with the present invention with the mattress removed; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof partly in elevation, illustrating the mattress in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bed folded; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the side bars illusti ting the same folded and extended in dotted lines; Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the sleeve carrying the spring supporting arms; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the sleeves to which the terminals of the central supporting member are secured; Fig. 8 is a similar view of one of the drop hooks carried at the terminals of the central supporting member adapted to be engaged by the sleeve set forth in Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a central section of Fig. 6, illustrating the spring supporting members secured therein;

The present invention resides in the pro" vision of a pair of end posts having collapsible bases and retained in spaced relation by a collapsing bar, said posts carrying at their upper terminal spring supports from which are suspended bars which support the side bars that retain the mattress in an elevated position.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 10 indicates the end posts which are centrally located with respect to the transverse dimension of the mattress and are provided at their lower terminals with the base portions 11. A transverse base portion 12 is pivoted to each side of the base 11 of each post and is adapted to swing upwardly against the post 10, said base portions being retained in their horizontal positions by the hooks 13 interposed between the posts and said base portions. In order that the posts may be retained in spaced relation when the bed is extended a bar 14 is pivoted to the inner transverse side of each base 11, said bars 14 adapted to swing upwardly and are connected at their adjacent terminals by a hinge of any suitable construction, said hinge adapted to operate so that said bars may swing upwardly. These bars are retained in horizontal position by the hooks interposed between the posts 10 and each of said bars.

At the upper terminal of the posts 10' are slidably mounted the sleeves 15 which are retained in any desired position by the set screws 16 operating through said sleeves and against the posts. Each sleeve 15 carries a transverse casing 17 in which the inner terminals of the spring arms 18 are retained in any desired adjustment by the set screw 19, said spring arms 18 having at their outer terminals the hook 20.

A sleeve 22 is slidably mounted centrally on each of the posts 10 and is retained in any desired position by the set screws 23. These sleeves are provided with the sockets 24: each of which receives the drop hook '25, the latter being carried at each terminal of a strap 26, the inner terminals of said straps being connected by a buckle. This strap provides a cent supporting means for the mattress and "ltS base hereinafter more fully described.

A rod 27 supported by each of the hooks carried at the terminals of the spring arms 18 through the instrumcntality of the eye 28 at their lipper terminals, said rods being provided at their lower terminals with the rectangular opening 29. The jointed lde bars 30 are provided at their terminals with the drop hooks 31 which are received in the rectangular openings or eyes 29 of the rods 27 and are supported thereby. The mattress is placed upon the side bars 30 and the strap 96 thereby securely supporting said mattress. If so desired a woven-wire screen base or mattress supporting frame 32 may be placed under the mattress upon the strap 26 and be secured to the side bars 30 forming a better bearing surface for the mattress.

From this construction it will readily be l l l l seen that when it is' desired to'collapse the bed the mattress A and the base 32 are reduced, and the spring bars 18 are taken In practice it is advisable to construct" a mattress in two sectionsrthat is, having the same jointed centrally in order that it may fold in a manner similar to the side bars 30 and thereby providing a means whereby the mattress and the frame-work of the. body. may be folded to be placed in a traveling case.

To prevent the bed from sagging on one side when occupied by one person only, a plurality of braces or sag equalizers 34 are provided for connecting the arms 18 to. the base 32. These braces are-arranged diagonally so that there will be littlev or no sagging of the mattress when one side only is used, as will readily be observed from the drawing.

From the foregoing, it will be observed that the bedstead may be easily collapsed or folded since the arms' 18 are telescopic, and detachable from the link members and posts. The side members may also be folded and detached from the link members, as will. be obvious. The braces or sag equalizers 34 may be detached from either 'the spring arms or the mattress supporting frame, said equalizers 34, when in an operative position, retaining the mattress sup porting frame on the side members or bars 30 and preventing the latter and said frame 7 from displacement.

Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new is:

1.In a collapsible bed of the class described, the combination with a plurality of end posts, of means whereby a mattress may be resiliently supportedby said posts, collapsible bases for said posts, foldable spacing bars interposed between said bases, and means-interposed between said posts whereby the mattress may be centrally sup ported.

2. In a bed -of the class described, the combination with a plurality of end posts, a collapsible base foreach of said posts, foldable spacing bars interposed between said bases,a sleeve slidably mounted on the upper terminal of 'each'of said-posts, spring supporting arms adjustably carried by said sleeve, spring supporting arms carried by said sleeve, links carried at the terminals of said supporting arms, and foldable side bars interposed between said links. 7 3. In a bed of the class described. the combination with a plurality of end posts, a collapsible. base for each of said posts, foldable spacing bars interposed between said bases, a sleeve slidably mounted on the upper terminal of each of said posts, spring supporting arms adjustably carried by said sleeve, spring supporting arms carried by said sleeve, links carried at the terminals of said supporting arms, and adjustable means whereby said mattress may be centrally supported. 1

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a plurality of end posts, of collapsible bases carried bylsaid end posts, foldable spacing bars interposed 'between said bases, spring supporting mem-' bers carried at the upper terminal of said rods, means whereby the mattress may be suspended from the terminals of said spring supporting rods, a sleeve adjustably mounted on each of said posts, and a strap in terposed between said sleeves adapted to support the mattress centrally.

5. in a folding bedstead, in combination, a plurality of end posts, a plurality of sectional spring arms detaehably carried by said posts, link members carried by said spring arms, sectional side members detachably earned by said link members, a mattress supporting frame detachably mounted on said side members, and means carried by said spring arms adapted to retain said frame on said side members, as set forth.

(5. In a folding bedstead, in, combination, a plurality of end posts, a plurality of sectional spring arms adjustably and detach.- ably carried by said end posts, link members detacbably carried by said spring arms,

side members detachably carried by said link members, and a mattress supporting frame detacliably mounted on said side members and prevented from displacement therefrom by said springarnis, as set forth.

7. In a folding bedstead, in combination, a plurality of end posts, a plurality of spring arms detachably and adjustably carried by said posts, a plurality of link members detachably carried by said spring arms,
