Application filed December 29, 1910. Serial No. 599,838.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE B. LOBACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Warm-Air-Regulating Hearth, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a hearth structure which ismade of metal and can be conveniently set in a cavity or opening in the wall of a building.
The inlet opening for the warm air is adjacent the bottom of the hearth and is covered by a plate which has a portion of 1ts surface perforated to permit passage of the warm air from the inlet pipe through the hearth into the room or apartment. The perforated portion is controlled by a slide or damper which uncovers a greater or less number of the said perforations, as desired.
My invention also comprises means for suspending cooking vessels from the top of the hearth, and likewise includes a foot rail, which passes around the outer edge thereof. This foot rail has its ends rigidly united to the sides of the hearth structure.
Certain other novel features of construction will appear from the detailed description which follows.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front view in perspective of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken through the bottom of the hearth structure, showing the perforated hearth plates and the means for closing the same and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the members constituting the metal border for holding the hearth body in place against the'wall, and likewise showing a portion of the foot rail and the man ner in which the foot rail is secured in position at its ends.
My invention comprises a box-like body 1, having a sloping top 2 and a perforated bottom 3. The surfaces of the" interior of this box 1 are finished in imitation of brick and tiling or the like, and is made of sheet metal or cast metal if desired. The bottom 3 has an opening therein to receive a collar or short section of piping 4:, which has an out-turned flange 4 at its upper end engaging the edge of the opening in the bottom 3, to form a tight fit therewith. This collar receives the end of a hot-air pipe 5, through which the supply of warm air for heating the room in which the hearth is used, is conducted.
In the bottom of the body of the hearth is placed a horizontal hearth plate 6, which projects beyond the edges of the hearth a certain distance into the room. The outer edge of this hearth plate is turned downward to fit snugly against the floor, as shown at 7, and the inner half of this hearth plate has perforations therethrough, as shown at 1 8. These perforations are in alinement with I the collar 4:, and the warm air passes therethrou-gh on its way to the room. These per- 1 forations are controlled by means of a sliding damper 8, which is supported by means 1 of guides 9, fixed to the under side of the 1 plate 6-, and extending from the back of the hearth toward the down-turned edge 7. This damper carries a pin 10 having a head thereon, which pin 10 is received by a slot 111 in the perforated portion of the hearth plate 6, as shown particularly on Fig. 1. This slot extends from the back of the hearth body 1 to the front edges thereof, and the Zpin 10 is arranged adjacent the inner edge 50f the sliding damper so that when the damper is in its open position the pin will {be drawn out only as far as the open front of the hearth, and when it is in its closed position it will be pushed back toward the i and consist of front faces 12 and sides 13 perpendicular thereto. When these border ;sections are in place, the faces 12 fit upon the flanges 1 of the hearth body, andthe :sides 13 engage the lath work or plaster forming the wall, so as to hold the hearth body 1 in place. The upper border section,
as shown in Fig. 4, has down-turned cars 14: at its ends, and these ears are perforated to ,receive nails or bolts which pass through the holes 15 in the faces 12 of the border sections. The engaging edges of the border sections 12 are beveled so that the top and side sections fit evenly together. When the hearth body has been put in place and the border sections 12 have been placed around the sides, engaging the out-turned rims 1, strips of molding of wood or any suitable material are fitted around the border sections 12. These border sections are indicated by the numeral 14, and they are so placed that their edges will engage the sides 13 of the border sections, making a neat and finished appearance. The structure, when the work of putting'it in place is completed, leaves the faces 12 of the metal border sections uncovered, so that the body 1 is provided with a continuous metal border along its sides and top which faces the interior of the room, while the surrounding border of molding can be painted to suit the color of the woodwork.
The numeral 15 indicates a foot-rail or foot-rest which is placed in front of the hearth and is supported above the hearth plate 6. This foot-rest 15 has up-turned ends 16, which enter openings 17 in the border sections 12, and are held by them in place.
18 are braces or supports for the foot-rest 15, which pass through the hearth plate 6 and are fastened to the floor in any suitable manner. In the top of the hearth body 1 is arranged a hook 520, to support a kettle or other vessel containing water, or a vessel containing articles of food to be warmed or cooked. The bottom of the hearth is adapted to receive vessels containing liquids or victuals. These can be warmed while the room is being ventilated and heated, the quantity of warm air entering the room being regulated by adjusting the sliding damper 8.
It will be observed that the hearth is of simple and compact construction; is absolutely safe and well designed for the purposes it is intended to serve. It forms an efficient means for warming and ventilating an apartment, and the foot-rest 15 affords the inmates of the apartment ample opportunity to warm themselves and make themselves comfortable around it; and in addition, the fiat hearth plate 6 and hook 20 allow the hearth to be used for the purpose of cooking and warming food stuffs and liquids.
I may make such slight changes in the shape and design of the parts as come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front, adapted to be set in a recess in the wall of a building, said body having its edges turned outward, metal border sections engaging the out-turned edges of said body to hold the body in. position, strips of molding surrounding the said border sections, and an air supply pipe communicating with said body.
2. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front and having its edges turned outward, said body being adapted to be set in a cavity in the wall of a building, metal border sections engaging the out-turned edges of said body and having portions bent at an angle thereto to engage the wall to hold the body in place, a molding surrounding said metal border sections, an air supply pipe communicating with the interior of said body, and a perforated hearth plate fitting the interior of said body adjacent the air supply p 3. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front and having out-turned edges, said body being adapted to be set in a recess in the wall of a building, metal border sections engaging said body along its out-turned edges, holding the same in place in the wall, a hearth plate having a portion fitting the interior of said body, and a foot-rest supported above said hearth plate along its outer edges and having its ends engaged by said border sections.
4:. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front and having out-turned edges, said body adapted to fit in a cavity in the wall of a building, an air inlet pipe communicating with the interior of said body through the bottom thereof, a hearth plate having a portion supported above the bottom of the said body and having perforations therein adjacent the said air inlet pipe, a damper for controlling the supply of air through the perforations in the air inlet pipe, metal border sections engaging the edges of the body and the wall to hold the body in place, and a foot-rest supported by standards passing through the hearth plate and having its ends engaged by the border sections.
5. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front and having out-turned edges, said body adapted to fit into a cavity in the wall of a building, a warm air inlet pipe communicating with the interior of said body through the bottom thereof, a hearth plate supported above the bottom of the said body and having a part extending forward, the said hearth plate having perforations therethrough adjacent the air inlet pipe, a sliding damper to control the passage of an through the air inlet pipe and the perforations to the room, guides along the bottom of the hearth plate for supporting the damper, means for moving said damper, said means comprising a pin fitting a countersunk slot in said hearth plate, metal border sections engaging the out-turned edges of the body and having means for engaging a wall to hold the'body in place, molding arranged around said metal border sections, and a foot-rest having supports passing through the hearth plate and having its ends bent upward and engaged by the border sections to hold the same in place.
6. In a warm air regulating hearth, the combination of a body having an open front and having out-turned edges, said body being adapted to fit into a cavity in the wall of a building, a warm air inlet pipe communicating with the interior of said body through the bottom thereof, a hearth plate supported above the bottom of the body and having a part extending forward, said hearth plate having perforations there through adjacent the inlet pipe, a damper supported by the hearth plate, to control the passage of air from the inlet pipe, means extending through said hearth plate to regulate the damper, and a foot-rest around the outer edge of the hearth plate.
