This invention relates to engine governing meehanism, particularly to means for governing internal combustion engines, though the invention muy he applied to other types ot engine. i
The object of the improvcments.l is to render the governing positive and efficient.
Generally speaking, the invcntiton consists in the combination of a variable valve, changes in the degree of opening of which vary the speed of the en ine, as, for example, the intake valve o a reciprocating internal combustion engine; a reversible electric motor for increasing and diminishinol the degree ot' opening of this` valve, and a centrifugal governor controlling the reversing ofthe motor. ` Referring now to these views, tlieninneral 1 indicates an. internal combustion engine of the reciprocating kind, 2a dynamo driven by the engine', and amotor driven ln the dynamo. This particular contacts 18 and 19, suitably insulated, which are connected by wires 20, 21 with the motor brushes. The switch contacts are adapted to rest against either pair of stationary oontacts, or, in miti-position, to touch neither pai of stationary contacts. Resilient cushioning means are provided in connection with the electrical contacts. lroferahly they are associated with the stationary contacts` 13 and 14, and 15 and 16. 1. A valve controlling mechanism for reciprocating engine valves, comprising in combination, an engine, an engine valve, eccentrically mounted means for actuatin said valve, a se mental rack on the axis-o said eccentrica] y mounted means, a motor for varying the position of Said eccentrically mounted means, a Worm actuated by said motor and mcshn with said rack, the action being such that irward movement of the motor swings said eecentrically mounted means to increase the stroke of the valve and reverse movement of the motor swings said means to shorten the stroke of the valve, oppositely dis nosed contacts, a switch bar adapted to osciilate between said contacts, means governed by the speed of the engine for oscillating the switch-bar from one set of contacts to the other to reverse said motor, and means for adjusting the periods of contact het-Ween said switch-bar and said speed governed means to vary the limits of s eeds at which the stroke of the valve will e changed.
2. A valve controlling mechanism for reciprocating engine valves, comprising in combination, an engine, an engine valve, means for actuating said valve, an eccentric support for said valve actuating means, a segmental rack rotatable on the axis of said eccentric suppo'rt, a motor for varying the osition of said valve actuating mechanism or regulating the stroke of the valve, a worm actuate by said motor and meshing with said rack, a switch for controlling the direction of said motor, means governed by the speed of the engine for actuating said switch to reverse said motor,and means mounted to adjust the periods of contact between said speed governed means and said switch to vary the limits of speeds at which the stroke of the valve will be changed.
