ELEc'rIuc mm'r'me nEvroE FOR REVERSIBLE INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented June 8, 1909.
\ Application filed etober10, 19b7, Serial No. 396,801.
To all concern: a i
Be it known that I, OARL'WIL ELM Asn-' LIN-G, a citizcn of theKingdom of Swe'den, residing at Siiderhanm, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Igniting Devices for Reversible Iii- 1 ternal-(Jombustion Engines, of which the fol-1 lowing is a specification.-
This inventIon-relates'to improvements in 2 dev ces for reversible x 1n-j electric 'igniting ternal combustion engines and 1 more 7 par-j in operation within a short period o order to revent the engine from stopping.
ticularly such engines m which the"-reversal' ,is accomplished'b-y pre-ignitions; Before the] reversal of such engines the-speed of the same 1 should be decreased: so 'much the counter-pressure caused by, a pre-i nition is" sufiicient to chair e the 'directi'on o -1 'o tatio1'1*. The said rduction of the; speed generally is accomplished'ib 'nianually putting the igniting device outs operation. Inasmuch as the speed of the" engineraft'er of the engine.
the disconnectionof theignitin device :is
diminished to nil in a few sec onds-it isfi-m portant that the igniting device is again put time in In reversi le' engines heretofore known'it is usual that the operator manually returns the igniting device into active position, judging from the speed of the engine or by means of a speed-indicator when the s eed of the engine I tions and arrangements of is suitable for reversalr I In each case such maneuver requires great practice and promptness of the operator, and it often appens that the engine stops or reversal does not switch which is connected in shunt to the switch 913, and the position of which is take place.
The object of the presentinvention'is to provide a device by which the'said inconveniences will be removed and which will automatically effect a pre-ignition in the moment most suitable for reversal.
The invention consists in the .combinadescribed and c aimed. y
In the accompanying drawing I have my invention.
shown diagrammatically an embodiment of Referringto the drawing, l indic'atesthe controlling shaft or any other shaft driven by the engine. On said shaftis mounted a sliding-contact 2 -consisting of the slidingspring 3 and a pulley 4. To the shaft 1, 1s
further secured a collar 5' of insulating ma-.
terial and having a contact piece 6 electrically connected to the shaft 1. The pulley 4 and the sliding-spring 3 can be rotated on parts hereinafterv the shaft by means of a belt 7 and a pulley 8 ,which is connected to an operating crank 9. To the latter is rigidl'yjconnected'a disk 10 having 'a contact piece 11 which in a certain positionjcloses a circuit between two contact springs 12 and 13 hearing against thesaid dlsk. The spring 13' is in connection with the';sliding-spring 3 and the spring 12 with an induction apparatus 14 which is connected to the one'pole of asuitable source of electric current 15 and to the usual igniter 16. The other pole of the source of current is..connected to earth,"
The above described devices are of well known construc.t ion- .antl constitute an electric spark igniter in' ,which.th'e moment of ignition ma be changed or which may he put out'of-operation'at will. The construct- '-"ive details: of the said-device are unessential for-the present-invention and for thesame other-well known similar i In'itV be'siibst1tuted. .l' understood that any conventional driving niting devices connection may, when deemedexpedient, be
substituted for the pulleys 4 and 8 and the belt 7 For instance sprocket wheels maybe usedin lieu of the pulleys4 and 8, and a s rocket belt'in lieu of the belt 7, but I have eemetl it unnecessary to illustrate said sprocket gears and sprocket belt. In combi- I nation with the said device I arrange accord- 'ing to my present 1nvent1on a second ignition circuit theaction ofwhich depends exclusively on the speed of the engine. -In the form shown the shaft 1 is provided with a such as metal, insulated from the sleeve, and of two'contacts 20 and 21wh1ch are connectedto the brushes 12 and 13 respectively. While the engine runs normally, the governor 17 keeps the sleeve 18 in such a position, that the contacts 20 and 21 do notengage the ring 19. The arm 9 is-in 'such'a powould also have a sition that the current can flow from the battery 15 through the sliding spring 12, contact piece'11, sliding spring 13 and the contact apparatus 26. The contact piece 6 is in such a positionon the shaft 1- that the circuit is closedat a suitable position of the crank 01 the engine, and a spark in well known manner and Lt the desired moment is obtziined at the gniter 16. When theengine is to be re-- versed, the operating crank 9 is moved from its position against the stop 22- to a position i in which the contact piece '1], is separated from the s ring 12. In said position the ignition circuit 18 broken ntt'he switch 91.3, so that no ignitions occur and the speed of the engine decreases. Whens certain reduced speed has been reached, the sleeve 18 ofthe governor is so displaced that the ring 19 comesinto contact with the brushes 20 and 21. .The switch 9 -j13 is then shunted.
through wire 23, sliding spring 20, ring. 19, sl ding spring 21 and wire 24, so that the ignition" device again becomes active. By;
means of the gear 4, .7 Sthe slidingspring 3 llitS, however, been turned into such It position that nine-ignition is obtained by which theengine islreveis'ed. As soon as the reversal has been accomplished, the operating crank 9 should be moved so that. the normal ignition-circuit is again close-d end ignition is obta ned. at the position of the crmilcshuft 50 l engine itself;
that is most; suitnble forthe new direction of rotation. The said adjustment of the operati'ng crank may: be 'ziccomplished either manually oreutometicnlly by means of any suitable adj usting; device actuated by the Havingin'ow described my invention, what I claim esnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is:
1. In am-electric igniting device for reversible combustion engines, the combinetion of an ignition circuit having ed'usteblo circuit closing means, at switch in sair circuit connected with the said circuit-closing means to adjust the. latter on movement of the switch, at second circuit, andzt switch in the last mentioned circuit. controlled by the speed of the engine.
2. In an electr c igniting device for re combination of an ignition circuit having adustztble circuit-closing means, at switch in closing means to adjust the letter on movement of the switch, n'second circuit, and n switch in the last mentioned circuit controlled b the speed of the engine and shunted to the first-rnentionei'l switch.
In testimony'whereof I have signed my nome to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
