ANTON SOHMAOKERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO LANE.&
' BODLEY.
Lette/rs Patent No.100,67 2, dated March 8,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MORTISINTGFMACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in rthese Lettera Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it may concern;
. Be it known thatlI, ANTON' ScHMAcKERs, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of' Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Chuck for IVIortising-Machines, Sac.; and I do hereby declare the following to bea suf'- ticiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable one skilled in the art to which my invention appertaius to make and use it, reference vbeing had to the accompanying drawings nia-king part of this specification. y
My invention consists of a chuck `designed to clamp and hold work t0k he nlol'tised, in connect-ion with the ordinary table of any description of mortising-machine,
t and so constructed that while it is extremely-light and cheap, it will resist the tendency to vspring by the pressure of the tightening-screw; and the tighteningscrew is soconnected to the ch nek thatt can be brought y to bear upon the work at any required point above the face of the table, to snit different depths of stu`, it being desirable that work to be mortisedshould be clamped at a pointnear the top of the stuff.
The accompanying drawingv is a perspective riew of r a chuck embodying my invention.
. The case of the chuck is composed of the bottomplate A, c heeks B B', and gib C.
The gib Ois necessarily detachable, to admit of the case beine' .nished insideb lanin and when connected to the cheeks iu the manner shown,.serves to firmly connect them together and resist the spreading tendency of the clalnping-screw D.
The screw D is connected to the case by the swinging link E, into which the screw is tapped, the link being` pivoted to the cheek B at b by means of holt or pm l One side of the cheek B is curved, as shown, to conform to the are described by the link E.
By the provision of the swinging link the clampingscrew can be raised or lowered, so as' to press against the stuff G at any desirable height above the face ofthe table. Anysize stuti' within the limits of the chuck can thus be secured, and at the most desirable point.
In order that the' clamping-screw, after being adjusted in height, may not fall or become displaced after being released from `the work, the set-screw H is provided- This is tapped into the link E, and rests against the cheek B, thus serving to support the link in any desired position.
The clamping-Screw D is providedat its inner end with a washer, I, which is fitted to revolve freely on the end of' the screw, and the outer end is fitted with a hand-wheel or crank handle, J. Y
Though I regard the swinging link E as the-best possible device for the purpose designed, modifications of my invention may be constructed which will dispense with it; as, for example, a series of tapped l holes maybe provided in the cheek B, into which the screw D may be inserted at dii'erent heights from the table. This is, however, a very inferior modiication.
This chuck, as shown, is adapted to be used with any construction of mortiser, and can be securedto the ordinary table in -any suitable way. In the construction of new machines the chuck may be embodled in thetable. j
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. In connection with the cheek B, the swinging link E, set-screw H, and clamping-screw D, combined and operating inthe manner and for the purpose set forth.
f 2. The combination and arrangement ofthe cheeks lWitnesses FRANK MILLWARD, J om.' B. MANNING.
