Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed January 2, 1908. Serial No. 408,940.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE D. CHELLI's, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containing Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containing vessels and particularly to the construction of a shoulder on such a vessel.
In the formation of a month about a can or bottle it is frequently desired to have the same finished with an exterior shoulder. This is particularly true where there'is to be applied to the can or bottle mouth a closure which is to engage the bottle mouth externally and be held in place by such engagement. To provide a suitable bearing surface forthe engaging parts of such a closure it is necessary that this shoulder have a smooth under surface and, furthermore, that it present a firm unyielding rim over-which the closure bears.
To this end I have devised my present invention which consists in the formation of a shoulder reinforced and closed on its lower side to secure the results above specified.
The invention will be more fully described in thespecification which follows andan embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanving drawing which forms a part of said specification.
Throughout both specification and drawing like reference numerals represent corresponding parts and in the drawings :Figure 1 shows, in section,-a side view of a bottle neck embodying my invention, Fig. 2-, a side elevation of such a neck, Fig. 3, a plan view 'of the same, Fig. 4 is a view of the neck with the supporting disk removed, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the removed disk, and F 6, showing a shoulder cngaging closure 1n place-on such a neck.
Various modifications may obviously bemade in the construction, arrangement, and the interengagement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1 indicates the mouth portion of any containingvessel. This may obviously be of any shape or material but the formshown being that of a metal can having a reduced neck portion which alone appears in the.
' drawing.
havin 2 is a laterally flaring rim about the mouth of the neck 1 which terminates in a depending flange 3.
.4 is an annular disk surrounded by an upturned rim 5 and having a central opening of suitable size to fit snugly over the neck 1. In assembling the parts the neck lmay either be. formed separately, with its flange 2 and rim 3 already shaped and with the .disk 4 already previously shaped and assembled-thereon after-which the neckl may be secured to the containing vessel, or, the
SEAL
disk 4 may be formed and slipped over the neck while still in a tubular form after which the rim and flange 2 and 3 may be formed on the neck 1 and. the parts broughtinto engagement, asshown in Fig. 1, afterward. The flanges 3-and'5 'preferablyhaye a driving fit so that when the disk 4 is .driven up agamst the under side of the shoulder it will be snugly held in place although the parts may be held by soldering or by crimping the outer flange 3 upon the-disk insuch away as to hold it firmly within itself.
In this manner a firm, even shoulder with a smooth under surfacewill be formed about the mouth of the vessel so that a closure 7, as shown in Fig. 6, will find suitable engagementfor its spring shoulder engaging fingers 15 and its locking lip 14. The disk 4 afiords an'internal brace for the flange 2 and depending rim 3- and secures these parts against distortion during thecapping process or against damageor disfigurementduring use.
hat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
In combination, a containing vessel neck having a rim about its mouth, a depending flange about said rim, a disk having an opening therein and surrounding said neck, said disk having an upwardly extending marginal flange adapted to fit within the flange on the rim and a closureon said vessel mouth 5 spring fingers in engagement with said disk.
In testimony whereof, I- affix-my signature GERRY L. BROOKS,
' WIDD B. TWADDLE.
