SAW.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1.911.
Application filed April 4, 1910. SerialNor. 553,208.
To all whom tt may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. JAcoBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hand-saws, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel ar rangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will 'be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a saw with a handle and attachments so constructed and arranged as to provide a square or a miter, convenient for use when desired, but so constructed and arranged that they may be placed and held in positions out of the way, so that the saw may be used for sawing without hindrance or interference.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the saw that either side thereof may be employed for measuring, squaring or mitering pieces of material.
In order to enable other skilled in the a'rt to which my invention pertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of a portion of a saw embodying the invention, showing the parts by continuous lines in their normal positions and arranged to form a square, and by dotted lines the positions to which the parts may be moved and set when used as a miter; Fig. 2, is an edge view of a portion of the saw; Fig. 3, is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by. the arrows; Fig. 4, is a view partly in section and partly in elevation taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, is a detached perspective view of one of the adjustable abutments.
Like numerals of reference, refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 7, designates the saw blade, which is provided at its cutting edge with teeth of the ordinary construction, and on one or both of its sides at its other edge with a scale 8, graduated into suitable dimensions. Secured on the one end of the saw blade 7, by means of rivets 9, is the handle 10, which has a portion formed with a straight edge 11, located at a right angle to the graduated edge 8, of the saw blade. The handle 10, is provided with a slot in which the blade 7, is located and firmly held by means of said rivets. tended from the straight edge 11, of the handle and on each side of the saw blade 7, near its graduated edge, is a segmental opening 12, each of which extends upwardly as is clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, of the drawing.
Pivotally secured at one of its ends to the handle 10, at the inner lower corner thereof, and on each side of the blade 7, is an abutment 13, each of which has near its other end a segmental arm 14, provided with a segmental slot 15, which arms are adapted to it and operate in the openings 12, of the saw handle. Located in an opening 16, which is preferably countersunk in one side of the saw handle, is a screw bolt 17, which has at one of its ends a head 18, to rest against one of the arms 14, and said bolt has near its other end a shoulder 19, to rest against the other arm 14, on the opposite side of the saw blade, from the first-named arm. Engaging the screw-threaded end of the bolt 17, is a nut 20, by tightening which, it is evident that the head 18, on said bolt will be drawn or pressed against one of the arms 14, while the shoulder 19, on the bolt, will be pressed against the other arm 14, thus holding said arms in the desired position. When it is desired to use the saw, as a try-square, the abutments or plates 13, are placed against the straight edge 11, of the handle and are held in such position by means of the arms 14, and bolt 17, which engages both of said arms. When it is desired to use one or both of the abutments or plates 13, for the purpose of obtaining different angles or for mitering, the nut 20, on the bolt 17, may be loosened, when it is apparent that the pressure of the head and shoulder of said bolt will be removed from the arms 14, thus allowing the abutments or plates 13, to be placed at the desired angle, which may be indicated by the scale 8, when said abutments or plates may be fixed in their adjused positions by tightening the nut 20, so as to cause the bolt 17, to clamp the arms 14, on said plates.
The inner lower corner of the handle 10, to which the plates 13, are pivotally secured, may be formed with a recess 21, on each side of the saw blade, thus providing overhanging projections 22, to which an in'-' Wardly extended'lug 23, on the endofv each projections and lugs.
Having thus fully described my invention Letters-Patent is- A saw having a handle provided With segvmental openingsto each sidejojf theblade, a rivet extending transversely through the handle at its corner, an abutment provided with vapertured ears .pivotallymeunted on I said rivet .adjacent each end, a slotted seg r mental arm carried by each ,abutment extending into said opening, said handle having aVV transverse bore extending therethroughcommunicatlng with the segmental openings, saldbore being provided With enlarged outer end portions, a headed bolt eX- tending through said bore and arms, said ,j bolt being provided With a reduced thread- What I claim as new and desire to secure'by" ed end forming a shoulder engaging one of v said arms, the head of said bolt engaging --the other arm, and a thumb nut mounted on said bolt for looking said arms in their adjusted position.
