Description

E. W. CARTER.
DRAWERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 2, 1911.

EZRA W. CARTER, OF
DBAWERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed Marsha, 1911. Serial in. 611,783.
Patented Uct. 17, 19M.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EZRA W. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of-New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in drawers, and it comprehends, essentially, the production of an undergarment of that'general type having secured thereto a reinforced suspensory which is designed not only to serve its ordinary purpose as a sack or pocket, but also to bridge and close the opening below the fastening devices.
A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear perspective views of the improved undergarment; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the suspensory detached from the undergarment. 1 V
In said drawing, 1 designates, in a general manner, a pan of drawers of the usual construction, which are formed, as is customary, with a split front, the split resulting in the production of the halves 2 and 3. The upper portions of said halves are designed to be buttoned or otherwise fastened together at their front edges as indicated by the numeral 11, while the lower portions bfl are left free at such point, the spaces; between the latter portions of said edges constituting the usual crotch opening, indicated by the numeral t.
The suspensory element is designated generally by the numeral 5 and consists of a strip or blank of suitable textile material folded transversely upon itself along its central line, as shown in Fig. 3, said strip having substantially the sha e of an isosceles trapezoid. When so fol ed, this strip is fastened against the inner surface of one of the halves, preferably the left-hand half 2, by a line of stitches 6 running along its straight or folded edge, and is positioned in such a manner that the tongue 7 formed by its inclined edge and lower edge will project across and thus bridge the opening 4; so as manner indicated, a
to close the same. The short upper edge of the folded strip is attached to the half 2 by a row or rows of stitches 8 and also to the right-hand half by the row of stitches to and extending parallel with the corresponding edgesof the strip. The stitches thus obviously serve not only to secure the strip to the garment, but also to fasten the folded portions or halves of said strip toether along the three edges indicated, the fourth or inclined edge of the strip being left free. If desired, the attachment of the strip to the garment may be strengthened by an additional line of stitches 10 arranged parallel with the vertical row 6.
The tongue 7, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, has a length suflicient to extend a considerable distance beyond the opening 4 and thus effectually close the same. As a result, the adjacent parts of the body of the wearer will be protected and kept warm, as will be understood, and such parts will be prevented from rojecting through and catchin g in the said opening.
ti dproviding a .blank of the shape describe above, and folding the same in the pocket or sack will be produced whose openmg or mouth is afforded by the free or unconnected inclined edges; this sack is ada ted to receive the testicles, and hence GOIIStltlltBS the suspensory proper, the introduction of testicles therein being facilitated by the tongue formation and the inclination of the edges last mentioned. Finally, the garment itself is reinforced by the attachment of the suspensory element thereto and its specific positioning.
I claim as my invent1on':
A pair of drawers having a split front,
the two halves of which are provided at the upper portions of their front edges with interengaging fastening means, the lower portions of said edges beln left free to produce the crotch openin t erebetween, and a trapezoidal strip 0 textile material folded transversely upon itself, to produce a ocket 9, said rows of stitches being located close I between its two parts, the folded strip being arranged againstthe' inner surface of one of said halves and stitched to the same along its top and bottom edges, and its line of fold, the inclined remaining edge and a my hand in presence of two subscribing witportion of said bottom edge defining benesses. tween theme tongue which projects across said, opening in position to close the same R CARTER" 5 and which is open along the former edge to Witnesses:
permit accessto the pocket. DAVID ASHWORTH,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set MAISE A. GRANGER.
