WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1'7, 1911.
Application filed March 9, 1910. Serial No. 548,184.
Wrench, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description. l
An object of my invention is to provide a wrench,.more particularly designated as a spanner wrench, for engaging holes in peripheral surfaces, of objects of varying diameters; I
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a handle provided with a jaw extending at an angle from the handle, and having thereon'a gripping lug for engagement with the peripheral surface of an object to be turned or adjusted, and a second jaw provided with a gripping lug for engagement with the peripheral surface of the object, the said second jaw being pivotally mounted on the handle of the wrench and in contact with a spring mounted on the said handle.
Reference'is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in both the views, and in which Figure l is a side-elevation of my inven-' tion showing the same applied, with the object engaged by the wrench, pictured in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 -is a plan view of my invention showing the means employed for securing the spring on the handle of the wrench Referring more particularly to the figures,
' I employ a handle A, having pivotally mounted thereon at one end of the handle, a jaw B, secured, to the handle A by a pin .C held in place by suitable fastening members. A spring D is mounted on the extended portions of a pin E, passed transversely through the handle with projecting portions on both sides of the handle. A second pin F is passed transversely through the handle A in the same manner as the pin E, and the ends of the spring D are held against the pin F by the pressure exerted when the spring D is doubly looped over the pin E, as will be easily seen by referring to Fig. 2.
f The spring. D after. being logped over the pin E, extends forwardly an back of the pivotally mounted press the same inwardly toward engages the jaw B, to
the handle When it is desired to apply the wrench to i an object 0, having suitable holes in'the peripheral surface of the object, the gripping lug N of the jaw G is inserted in one of the holes, and by operating the handle A the pivotally mounted jaw B is caused to slide around the peripheral surface, of the object O and ject. In this position the wrench securely grips the object O which can then be turned or adjusted as desired, by operating the handle A.
Although I have described-my invention as shown it will be, understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction disclosed, the scope of my inventionbeing fully defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A wrench comprising a handle having at one end a jaw extending laterally from the handle and provided at its extremity with an inwardly extending lug, a second jaw of greater length than the first-named jaw proengage a second hole in the ob vided at one end with spaced ears engaging the handle at the junction of the first-named jaw therewith, a pivot pin passing throughthe ears and the handle for pivoting the said jaw to the handle, said last-named jaw having at its free end an inwardly extending lug, a plurality of pins passing transversely through the handle in rear'of the pivot pin of the movable jaw, and a substantially yoke-shaped spring hearing at its body portionfagainst the movable jaw, the arms of the spring having coils intermediate their ends engaging the last-named pins, the free ends of the arms engaging the ends of the vother last-named pin.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. i
. AUGUSTIN BERAN.
