Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
SeriaI No. 572,247.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ANTHONY DE PADRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Razor-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in guards used in conjunction with ordinary razors for preventing accidental cutting of the skin while the razor is being used; and my objects, generally stated, are to provide a novel construction of guard for the purpose stated which will effectually serve to prevent cutting of the skin in shaving all parts of the face and neck, may be readily applied to a razor for shaving either with the right or left hand, be simple of construction and economical of manufacture, and be adjustable for shaving as closely as desired.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my invention, the guard being shown as applied to a razor. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the razor and guard of Fig. 1 showing it in one of the positions it assumes when in use, the curved dotted line representing the contour of the face to be shaved, the section being taken at the line 2 on Fig. l and viewed in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view of the guard with the guard-bar removed. Fig. 4 is a view like that of Fig. 1 with the guard-bar removed; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of the bar which cooperates with the guard of Fig. 4.
My improved guard, in its preferred form, is represented at 6 and is formed preferably of sheet-metal bent to afford a longitudinally extending socket-portion 7 and a lateral extension 8, which is of general concavo-convex shape in cross-section as represented most clearly in Fig. 2. The extension 8 is cut away at its free edge intermediate its ends as represented at 9 to afford the separated end-sections 10, the free edges of which latter are preferably curled as represented at 11. The ends of the socketportion 7 of the guard are each provided on a free edge thereof with straps 12 which are bent into loops as represented and preferably interlock with the socket-portion 7 as represented in Fig. 1, the socket-portion be ing slitted as represented at 13 for this purpose. and preferably non-integral therewith is a bar 1 1, this bar in its preferred form being of U-shape in cross-section and fitting upon the outer free ends of the sections 10 as rep- Cooperating with the extension 8 resented in Fig. 1. The bar 1 1 is adapted l to be positioned on the extension 8 as described by sliding it longitudinally over the ends of the sections 10.
When the guard is to be used, the blade 15 of the razor represented at 16 is inserted into one end of the socket-portion 7 and through the straps 12 to position the guard on the razor as represented in Fig. 1, in which position the point of the razor lies within one of the straps. For shaving, the razor with the guard mounted thereon as described, is applied to the face as illustrated in Fig. 2, namely with the bar, which forms a guard, and an edge of the blade 15,
by which a person cuts himself, from touching the skin, this feature of my guard being of especial value when the razor is used about the nose and ears as it positively prevents cutting of the skin. For shaving the upper lip upwardly to shave the hairs close to the nose, the bar 14: should be removed in order that the razor-edge may be brought close up to the nose, the edge 18 of the extension 8 operating to prevent the razoredge from cutting the nose, and the edges of the sections 10 guarding against cutting of the skin by the razor.
A razor constructed in accordance with my invention may be used without the aid of a mirror, as there is no danger of the point of the razor cutting the ears or the nose, or any part of the razor penetrating the skin. Furthermore, there is no danger of pimples resulting from shaving with my improved guard as it prevents shaving close enough to produce pimples.
It will be noted that the guard-edge of my improved device is connected with the socketportion 7 by a loop-extension which permits the guard-edge to be bent toward or away from the plane in which the razor-edge lies to permit of as close shaving as desired. Furthermore, the razor-blade may be inserted into the socket-portion of the guard from either end, and thus permit of shaving with either the right or left hand, two of the straps 12 being provided so that the point of the razor will be covered when the guard is positioned on the razor for either right or left hand shaving.
In shaving about the ears it is desirable that the edge of the razor be exposed to view, in order that the hair near the ears be cut straight. The provision of the opening 9 in the guard readily permits the user to accurately position the razor-edge against the face for the purpose just stated.
WVhile I have shown a separate bar 14: forming the guard-edge, it will be readily understood that so far as certain features of my invention are concerned, the guard-edge may be integral with the extension 8 without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A razor-guard comprising a blade-receiving socket cut away on its front side intermediate its ends to a depth below the edge of the blade, and having end strips encircling the ends of the blade, and a reverselybent looped extension extending from said blade-receiving portion and provided with a guard-edge extending in advance of the edge of the blade.
2. A razor-guard comprising a section adapted to be connected with the blade of a razor, a reversely-bent looped section extending from said first section and cut away intermediate its ends to provide an opening opposite the cutting edge of the razor blade for exposing the latter to view when in shaving position, and a guard-edge bridging said opening and extending in advance of the cutting edge of the razor blade.
3. A razor-guard for the purpose set forth, formed of a section adapted to be connected with a razor, and a section connected with said first named section cut away intermediate its ends to form spaced apart guard-receiving end members, a guard carried by said members, the space between said end members being adapted, when the guard member is removed therefrom, to encircle the nose or other facial organ, whereby the skin close to such organ may be shaved.
4. Arazor-guard for the purpose set forth, formed of a section adapted to be connected with a razor, an extension connected with said section and formed of two members spaced apart to form a nose-receiving opening and a bar forming a guard removably connected with said members, for the purpose set forth.
5. Arazor-guard for the purpose set forth, formed of a section adapted to be connected with the razor, and an extension connected with said section and formed with members spaced apart and forming guard-edges for the razor, with a nose-receiving opening located intermediate said spaced members an edge of which opening forming a stop, for the purpose set forth.
