To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY R. CALKINS, citizen of the United States, residing at Hayward, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to ironing-boards.

The object of this invention is to provide an ironing-board and support which is so designed and constructed that skirts or other garments being ironed will be held up or suppo-rted and thus be prevented from coming in contact with the floor; to provide a board so supported at both ends as to allow a garment like a skirt to be slipped over the board; to provide means for easily adjusting the board to different levels; t-o provide an ironing-board having a foldable means for support; and to provide means whereby the board may be readily removed from the support and other boards of different sizes and shapes be substituted therefor.

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same with a portion broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail in section of the foldable basket.

In the drawings, A represents an ironingboard which may be of any suitable size, shape or material. vThe rear edge of this board A is provided with suitable hinges, such as the hooks 2, or their equivalents, which are adapted to be engaged with staples 8 on a spacing block 4L to form a detachable hinged connection. The block or crosspiece t is mounted on the upper surface of a table top 5 a short distance from one of its ends. A similar spacing block 6 is mounted on the other end of the table top 5 which is adapted to support the outer end of the ironing-board A, the spacing blocks are both preferably xedly secured t0 the table top 5.

Suitable means for holding the board so as to prevent its turning7 on its hinges are provided, as the catch mounted on the outer face of the block 6l and adapted tov engage a staple 8 on the underside of the ironing-board A; the catch 7 being normally retained in such engagement when Specification of Letters Patent.

Any suitable means for supporting the board and table 5 may be provided. Preferably the following simple and adjustable means are used: The table top 5 is mounted upon two pairs of legs 10-11, pivoted together centrally and crosswise at 10. The legs 10 are pivoted at their upper ends to brackets 12 securely fastened to the table top 5 and extending therebeneath. The upper ends of the legs 11 are pivoted to the outer ends of a sliding crosshead or adjustable block 13 slidably mounted on the underside of the table top 5. The crosshead or slidable block 13 is mounted on a bolt 14twhich extends through a slot 15 formed in the table top 5 and extending longitudinally thereof. The bolt 14; is sustained in the slot by means of a washer 16, and is threaded on its lower end to receive a wing nut 17 by the tightening of which the crosshead 13 i may be clamped on the underside of the table top 5 at any desired point within the length of the slot 15. The pair of legs 11 extend between the pair of legs 10, so that when the block 13 is drawn to its outermost position on the table top 5, the pairs of legs will fold compactly against the underside of the table top 5 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This admits of the whole device being stored in a small space when not in use. the upper ends of the pair of legs 11 permits the table top 5 being adjusted to various heights or levels.

From the foregoing it will be seen that: when a skirt or other garment is placed on the ironing-board A, the portion of the goods extending over the edges of the board may be supported upon the table top 5; the spacing blocks 4-*6 on which the ironingboard A is mounted separating the board from the table top a suliicient distance to permit of this arrangement, and to permit of the goods being turned or drawn over the board as ironing pro-gresses.

The board A being hinged at one end, admits of it being raised into the posit-ion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus permitting skirts and the like being slipped over the board the full length of the garment. Vith this board A using the spacing blocks 4 6 and table 5 it is not necessary to lay anything on the floor underneath the board to prevent the garment from coming in contact with the floor. If used in laundries, it would eliminate the necessity of a basket being placed underneath.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a device of the class described, the combination of a table member provided with iXedly secured spacing blocks, said table being longitudinally slotted at a point be- By using a hinge, such as here tween the blocks, an ironing board supported at both ends on said blocks, means for detachably holding the ironing board to the blocks, and means for adjusting the height of the table, said last named means including crossed supporting legs pivoted to one end of the table, a cross head to which the other pair of legs is secured, and a bolt passing through the cross head and slot in the table and having a wing nut by which it may be tightened.
