TIE-NIPPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALoNzo SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Consul, in the county of Marengo and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tie- Nippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in tie nippers, and consists in certain novel constructions, and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement placed for operation, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the fulcrum block, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the bar and block, and Fig. 1 is an enlarged transverse vertical section.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, comprises a nip bar, composed, preferably, of the bar proper 1 and a section 2 of piping slipped over one end of the bar. The pipe 2 is also provided with an integral reinforcing sleeve 3, at the end remote from the bar. The bar 1 is bent laterally at the end remote from the sleeve 2 as shown at 1, and is flattened transversely to form a transverse edge 5, which may be easily inserted beneath the end of the tie 6.
The fulcrum block is formed from an angle plate of suitable length, the sides 7 and 8 of the plate standing at right angles with respect to each other, and the outer edge of one side 8 in the present instance, is provided with a lateral flange 9. The flange 9 extends approximately at right angles from the side, and a block 10 of wood or like light material, is arranged between the sides 7 and 8, and is held in place by bolts 11. The block 10 is triangular in cross section, and is arranged with its base downward, and fits closely between the sides of the angle plate. The base of the block is inch higher than the lower edge of the plate with the outer edges of the sides of the plate, and the bolts 11 are passed from above downward, and are engaged by nuts 12 on the base of the block. The apex of the angle plate is slotted transversely as shown at 13, intermediate the ends of the plates, and at approximately the longitudinal center of the block. The apex of the block is cut-away adjacent to the slot, and on each side thereof to form a recess 14:.

1 near the commencement of the curved portion 4 thereof, and the eye 16 of the bolt extends into the recess 14, and is engaged by a transverse pin 17 The pin prevents the withdrawal of the eye bolt, but permits the bar to rock freely on the block, within the limits prescribed by the slot. The eye bolt is passed through the bar from belowupward and the threaded end is engaged, above the bar, by a nut 18, to hold the eye bolt in place. It will be evident that by removing the nut 18, the bar may be withdrawn from the bolt, and'from the fulcrum block.
The operation of' the device will be evident from the description. The block forms a fulcrum for the bar, and the bar may be lengthened or shortened to suit conditions. The device is assembled by first passing the eye bolt through the slot, with the pin 17 in place. The block 10 may then be placed between the sides of the plate, and secured by the bolts, after which the bar is engaged with the eye bolt. The flange 9 limits the rocking movement of the block toward the operator. The nipper is adjusted by inserting the small end of an ordinary claw bar 19 in the sleeve 2, thus giving power to the nipper to hold the tie against the rail while being spiked.
It will be evident that the improvement while simple in construction and operation, is very powerful, may be cheaply made, and is not liable to easily get out of order.
The eye of the bolt 15 is preferably of a size to pass through the slot 13, and the recess 14 is of a length to prevent the pin 17 from slipping out of the eye.
I claim,
1. In combination with a bar provided at one end with a claw, of a fulcrum block for the bar, said block being composed of an angle plate having the edge of one of its sides provided with a longitudinal flange. extending at approximately a right angle to the side, a block of fibrous material substantially triangular in cross section fitting between the sides of the plate, the base of the block being flush with the edges of the sides, bolts passing through the bar and plate, said plate having its sides transversely slotted at the apex of the plate, the block being recessed adjacent to the slot, an eye bolt having its eye inserted inthe slot, and a pin passing through the eye, the bar having an opening adjacent to the junction of the claw therewith for receiving the bolt, and a nut engaging the bolt.
2. In combination with a bar provided at one end with a claw, of a fulcrum block for the bar, said block being composed of an angle plate having the edge of one of its sides provided with a longitudinal flange extending at approximately a right angle to the side, a block of fibrous material substantially triangular in cross section fitting between the sides of the plate, the base of the block being flush with the edges of the sides, bolts passing through the bar and plate, said plate having its sides transversely slotted at the apex of the plate, the block being recessed adjacent to the slot, and an eye bolt passing through the bar adjacent to the claw, the eye of the bolt extending through the slot of the plate, and means engaging the eye to prevent withdrawal thereof.
3. In combination with a bar provided at one end with a claw, of a fulcrum block for the bar, said block being composed of an angle plate having the edge of one of its sides provided with a longitudinal flange extending at approximately a right angle to the side, a block of fibrous material substantially triangular in cross section fitting between the sides of the plate, the base of the block being flush with the edges of the sides, bolts passing through the bar and plate, said plate having its sides transversely slotted at the apex of the plate, the block being recessed adjacent to the slot, and an eye on the bar adjacent to the claw and extending into the slot, and means engaging the eye to prevent withdrawal thereof.
4. In combination with a bar provided at one end with a claw, of a fulcrum block for the bar, said block being composed of an angle plate, a block of fibrous material. substantially triangular in cross section fit" ting between the sides of the plate, the base of the block being flush with the edges of the sides, bolts passing through the bar and plate, said plate having its sides transversely slotted at the apex of the plate, the block being recessed adjacent to the slot, and an eye on the bar adjacent to the claw and extending into the slot, and means engaging the eye to prevent its withdrawal.
5. In combination, a bar provided at one end with a laterally curved claw, and with an eye adjacent to the claw and extending in the opposite direction, and a fulcrum block detachably connected with the eye, said block comprising an angle plate having a transverse slot in its apex and at approximately its longitudinal center for receiving the eye, a block of fibrous material substantially triangular in cross section fitting within the angle plate and having a recess registering with the slot, and a pin passing through the eye for preventing the withdrawal thereof.
6. In combination, a bar provided at one end with a laterally curved claw, and with an eye adjacent to the claw and extending in the opposite direction, and a fulcrum block detachably connected with the eye, said block comprising an angle plate having a transverse slot in its apex and at approximately its longitudinal center for receiving the eye, and means engaging the eye to prevent withdrawal thereof.
7. In combination, a bar provided with an eye near one end, and a fulcrum block detachably connected with the eye, said block comprising an angle plate having a transverse slot in its apex and at approximately the longitudinal center when receiving the eye, and means engaging with the eye to prevent withdrawal thereof.
