UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

SGARF-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
Application filed March 31, 1911. Serial No. 618,215.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT C. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarf-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in scarf pins, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel form of looking or securing means which will prevent loss of the pin or any accidental movement of the same after having been placed in the neck tie, or in the other material with which the pin may be engaged.
The invention has for its further object a securing means of simple, and inexpensive nature which can be easily operated and which will positively prevent any accidental movement of the pin.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the pin tongue being broken away, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line S 3 of Fig. 2.
The pin tonguedesignated 1 in the drawings has its upper end offset to form a lateral extension 2, the outer end of which extension is provided with a perforated bearing 3, the latter extending parallel to the pin tongue 1.
4: designates a head which may have its front ornamented in any desired manner, the head 4 being rigidly secured to the bearing 3. The lower or base end of the head 4 has a perforated bearing 5 rigidly secured thereto. The bearing 5 may be provided with lateral ears 6 by means of which it is secured to the rear of the head 1. A sliding looking or safety pin 7 extends through the bearings 3 and 5, and is formed to have a pointed upper end 8 which projects for a distance beyond the top of the head a and is provided with a head 9 at its lower end. A coiled spring 10 encircles the pin 7 and has its lower end abutting the bearing 5 and its up per end rigidly secured to the pin 7 by soldering or the like indicated at 11.
Tn operation the pin 1 is inserted in the tie in the usual way so that the material of the tie extends between the pin tongue 1 and the rear of the ornamental front, the pin being moved downwardly until the material of the tie abuts the lateral extension 2, after which the wearer grasps the head 9 of the safety pin 7 and pulls the latter downwardly until the extremity of the pointed end 8 is flush with the top or bearing 3, the head 4 thereupon being pressed rear'wardly so as to cause the extremity of the pointed end 8 to enter the tie at a point substantially in alinement with the point of entrance of the pin tongue. When the operator releases the safety pin 7 the latter will obviously by virtue of the pressure of the spring 10, be forced upwardly so as to enter into the material of the tie. It will thus be seen that the safety pin is not exposed and will positively hold the pin in position, while at the same time as the ornament extends downwardly from the top of the pin tongue the same will be held by the material in its proper position and against sidewise movement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a scarf pin, a pin tongue, one end of said tongue being laterally extended and formed with a perforated bearing, a head rigidly secured to said bearing and depending therefrom and being spaced from the body of said tongue, a perforated hearing at the base of the head on the back thereof, a safety pin having its ends projected through said bearing and having its upper end pointed to normally extend above the top of the head, a finger engaging head at the lower end of the safety pin for operating the latter, said finger engaging head extending outwardly from the safety pin and being spaced from the pin tongue body and a coiled spring surrounding the safety pin and having its upper end rigidly secured thereto, the lower end of said spring abutting the lower bearing.
2. In a scarf pin, in combination with a pin tongue, and an ornamental head rigidly secured to the upper end thereof in spaced relation thereto, bearings on the back face of the head, a spring pressed sliding safety pin in said bearings having its upper end pointed and extending above the top end name to this specification in the presence of of the head, and a finger engaging head on two subscribing Witnesses.
the lower end of the safety pin extending outwardly therefrom and being space RUPERT ROBINSON 5 from the pin tongue, said finger engaging Witnesses:
head normally abutting the base of the head. ADA E. HAGERTY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my J. A. MILLER.
