Description

aient emitir.
WILLIAM H. WRIGHT, OE ROCHESTER., NEW YORK.
.Lette/rs Patent No, 100,484, dated March 1, 1870.
' IMPROVEMENT IN FARM GATES.
The Schedule refexzred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom L may concern lie it known that'l, WILLIAM ll. Wmon'r, of ltoelur-ster, in tlmeountyof Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a eertain new and useful Farm Gate; and l do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exaet description thereof, rel'erenee being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this speeilieation, in whiehr'lhe Figure represents a side elevation of my invention. Y
'lhe object and nature of my invention will be understood by reference to the specification and drawing, and i 'Io enable others to make and use. the same, I will deseribe its eonstruetion and operation.
'lhe gate A is of that class which swings horizontally upon hinges, and also vibrates vertically, the bars l) being pivoted by bolts or otherwise to the uprights l).A i
Between any two ofthe bars E, I provide the brace B, pivoted to one of the uprights (generally the centralv thegate at the desired height, as indicated by dotted `lines in the drawinf.
Ilobalanee the weight of the gate upon the hinges, I use a weight, C, attzwhed to a eord or chain, (1, said eord passing Vover pulleys c and c', and secured at one end lo the gate-post. Sinee the pulley c is fixed to the gate and moves with it, it is obvious that I am enabled to use a mueh lighter weight, O, than is generally required for gates of this kind.
By means ofthe brace B and pins, the gate is suiieientl y stillened, and at the saule time it ean be. readily retained at any desired vertical adjustment. If it is necessary to prevent animals ti'om lifting the outer end of the gate, the pins b may be inserted in holes in the brace outside of the uprights.
One or more braces, B, may be used, placed in any convenient position in the gate.
A short wire or cord, x, maysupportone end of the braee B, so that it shall retain its inclined position; or where it is pivotedat the center, a counter` weight may be attaehed to the rear end.
In ease it should not be desirable to use the weight C, the brace B and adjustable pins b answer every purpose 4in support-ing the gate when lifted, and allowing it to swing clear of obstructions.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. 1n combination with a folding gate, the self-adjusting diagonal brace B, arranged to operate substantially in the `marmer shown, and for the purposes described.
2. The vcord or chain a, pulleys c and c arranged substantially as shown, and weight e, in combination with a folding gate, having a self-adjusting brace, B, for the purposes set forth.
, v H. lWRIGHT.
