To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL A. SENTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be applied upon the pointed end of hat pins particularly.

My invention has for its object primarily to provide a simple and efficient device or hat pin protector designed to be employed upon the pointed ends of especially a class of pins used by women for retaining their hats upon the head and which is adapted to prevent said pointed end of the hat pin from injuring persons by contact therewith who may be in elo-se proximity to the wearer of a hat retained by a pin having an exposed point; and to provide a form of hat pin protector which may be made in a highly ornamental or plain design.

Another object of the invention is to provide a tubular member adapted to be employed in conjunction with a hollow body and into the passage of which the pointed end of the hat pin is passed; and to further provide the tubular member with a clamp or gripping element adapted to engage the pin in a mannerwhereby the protector will be securely held upon the pointed end thereof.

A practical embodiment of the invent-ion is represented in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a form of pin used to retain a hat upon a womans head. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the tubular member and the gripping elements employed in my hat pin protector, and Fig. 3 is a section, partly in detail, of the tubular member and the gripping elements as used in conjunction with the hollow head of the hat pin protector.

The device or hat pin protector 10 is adapted to be applied to the usual or any preferred form of hat pin, as 11, and upon one end of which is provided a head 12 of either a fanciful or plain design which may be used by a person for forcing the pin 11 through a hat when being placed upon the head. The opposite end of the pin 11 is pointed, as at 13, and in proximity to said pointed end of the pin an annular groove or notch 14 is provided, or said groove or notch may be omitted, if desired.

The device 10 is composed of hollow body 15 of any preferred shape or lSize and may be of an ornamental or plain design. Upon one part of the hollow body 15 is formed one end of a tube or neck 16 which is tapered, or reduced, as 17, or may be of any shape. Interiorly of the free end ofv the tube or neck 16 is arranged a tubular member or pipe 18, one edge of which is flush with the edge of the free end of the neck 16, and a circular head or band, as 19 and 20, is formed upon each end of said pipe by flattening or cutting away the opposed surfaces of the central pa-rt of the tubular member or pipe 18 thereby providing a substantially elongated rectangular part or neck 21. At the juncture of the rectangular part 21 with the circular head or band 19 are formed two opposed openings 22 and 23, each of which communicates with the passage through the tubular member or pipe 18, and at the juncture of rectangular part 21, with the circular head 2O is provided a notch or slot 24.

To firmly hold the device 10 upon the pointed end 13 of the hat pin 11 I provide a clamp or gripping element which is preferably made of spring metal, as 25. The clamp or gripping element 25 has a substantially U-shaped body 26, or said clamp may be in the form of a cross-bar, as 27, and eX- tending therefrom are spaced parallel disposed arms or lingers 28 and 29. Upon the opposite end of each of the arms or lingers 28 and 29 is provided a tooth 30 and 3l, which are disposed in relative opposed directions at right angles with respect to said ngers. In the free edge of each of the teeth 30 and 31 is a notch or groove, as 32 and 33, which may be Veshaped or curved so as to adapt the teeth to firmly engage the notch 14 of the pin 11 or firmly grip the surface of a hat pin wherein the notch is omitted. In assembling the tubular member or pipe 18 and the clamp or gripping element 25 the cross-bar 27 of said clamp is inserted in the notch or slot 24 of the rectangular part or neck 21. T he arms or fingers 28 and 29 are guided upon the opposed faces of the elon gated rectangular neck or flattened part 21 and the teeth 30 and 31 are passed into the openings 22 and 23 at the juncture of said rectangular part with the circular head 19. The V-shaped notched ends 32 and 33 of the teeth 30 and 31 will then engage the notch 14 or surface of the hat pin when the pointed end 13 thereof is passed into the opening of the pipe 18 at the free end of the tapered tube 16 of the body 15 of the device.

For the purpose of holding the clamp or gripping element 25 against displacement when assembled with the tubular member or pipe 18 a holding sleeve 34 is directed over the circular head 20. In one edge of the holding sleeve 34 is formed two alined notches, as 35 and 36, so that the arms or fingers 28 and 29 of the U-shaped body 26 will be guided into said notches, and to hold the end of the tubular member 18 firmly within the end of the tube or neck 16 of the body 15 a spacing sleeve, as 37, is held upon the circular head 19.

In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention7 therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A hat pin protector of the character described, comprising a hollow body having an opening therein; a tubular member arranged within the hollow body adjacent the opening; said tubular member having a flattened neck and provided with two openings, each formed in one of the flattened surfaces at one end of the neck; a head provided upon the end of the neck at said openings, one edge of said head being flush with the edge of the opening in the hollow body; a substantially U-shaped gripping element straddling the neck and having two teeth, each disposed through one of the openings of said neck; and means provided upon the head of the tubular member and adapted to space the tubular member from the hollow body.

2. A hat pin protector of the character described, comprising a hollow body having an opening therein; a tubular member arranged within the hollow body adjacent the opening, said tubular member having an elongated substantially rectangular neck, the opposite surfaces at one end thereof being provided with two openings and said rectangular neck having a notch formed in its opposite end; a head formed upon the end of the rectangular neck at said openings and having one edge thereof flush with the edge of t-he opening in the hollow body; and asubstantially U -shaped gripping element disposed in the notch of the elongated rectangular neck, and having the arms of the U guided along the opposite surfaces of the elongated rectangular neck, said U-shaped gripping element having the free ends of its arms directed through the openings of said elongated rectangular neck; and a spacing sleeve provided upon the head to hold the tubular member from the neck of the hollow body.

3. A hat pin protector of the character described, comprising a hollow body having a reduced tubular part; a pipe arranged within the reduced part, said pipe having opposite flattened surfaces at one end of each of which is an opening communicating with the passage through the pipe and have ing a notch formed in the opposite end of the flattened surfaces; a circular head formed upon the end of the pipe adjacent to said openings and having one edge there of flush with the free edge of the reduced tubular part of the hollow body; a circular head formed upon the opposite end of the pipe; two spacing sleeves, each mounted upon one o-f the circular heads; and a substantially Ueshaped clamp disposed in the notch of the pipe and having upon the free ends of each of its arms a tooth, each of which is disposed in one of the openings of said pipe.

4. A hat pin protector of the character described, comprising a hollow body with an opening therein; an elongated tubular member having flattened surfaces arranged within the hollow body, said tubular member having an opening in each of its fiattened surfaces at one end thereof, each opening communicating with the passage through the tubular member, and said tubular member having a notch formed in its opposite end; a circular head formed upon the end of the tubular member adjacent to said openings therein and having one edge flush with the edge of the opening of the hollow body; a spacing sleeve held upon said circular head; a circular head formed upon the opposite end of the tubular member adeach formed upon the opposite end of one jacent to the notch thereof; a cross-bar arranged in the notch of said tubular member; two arms, each having one of its ends formed upon the ends of the cross-bar; two teeth,

of the arms, said teeth having notched free edges; and a holding sleeve held upon the circular head at the notched end of the tubular member and having two opposed notches in one of its edges into which is guided the 10 cross-bar and adjacent ends of the arms thereof.
