' HATTORNEY y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FBANK C. MATTHEWS, OF UNITY STATION, PENNSYJVANIA.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. MATTHEws,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Unity Station, in the County of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lubricating valves, and more particularly to that type of valve used 'in' connection' with a triple feed lubricator for locomotives.
The objectof the inventi'on is to furnish a valve with positive and reliable means, in a manner as Will be hereinafter set forth, whereby a person having charge of the valve can ascertain exactly to what extent the valve has been 'moved, and thus accurately regulate the amount of fluid thatmay pass throu 'h it.
I attain the above object by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the valve,
partly brok'en away and partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view of a portion of the valve in accordance wi th this invention, and Figy is a bottom plan of the same.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a lubricator body having a lubricant port 2 normally in communication With a nozzle or ejector 3 detachably mounted in 'a sight feed casing or arranged in the body of the lubricator, said ejector having a valve seat 5.
6 denotes a boss carried by the lubricator body 1 and this boss has an opening 7 with the Walls thereof screw threaded to receive the plug 8 of a stuflingbox 9'. The stuflingbox 9 has a gland 10-and a cap 11. Adjustably mounted in the stuffingbox 9 is a valve Stem 12 having, the inner end thereof tapered', as at 13 to engage the seat 5 of the ejector 3. Theouter end of the valve Stem 12 has a rect'angular shank 14 supporting a handle or Wheel 15.
VVALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 26, 1911, Application flled April 5, 1911. Serial No. 619,039.
The elements 1 to 15 inclusive are, f tlle ordinary and Well known type and 'ih'y` `invention resides in reconstructing the Stuflingbox 9 and the handle or Wheel 15. First, I provide the Stuflingbox 9 With an annular collar 16,- Said collar being formed integral with the Stuflingbox 9 by a relatively thin web 17. The outer' Vertical walls of the col' lar are provided With suitable graduations 18 and 19, one being a coarse-measured Scale and the other a small Scale, the two scales being harmoniously combined, So as to co-act with each other. Second, I provide the handle 15 with a radially disposed enlargement 20' supporting a Vertical indicator or pointer 21 having the upper! end thereof In proximity to the ,periphery of the collar 16. As the adjustment of the Stem 12 relatively to the seat 5 is very minute, the pointer 21 is not moved away from the collar 16, except When the parts of the stuflingbox are disassembled. The handle 15 can therefore be accurately adjusted to allow a predetermined flow of lubricant into the ejector 3.
\Vhat I claim is 1. The combination with a valve having a stuflingbox, a valve Stern adjustably held by said box, and a handle carried by said stem, of a collar surrounding Said stuflingbox and having an inwardly extending relatively thin web formed integral therewith and with said stuffingbox and having the outer Vertical face thereof graduated, a radially disposed enlargement carried by Said handle, and a Vertical integral with the outer portlon of Said enlargement and extending in proximity to the outer face of Said collar, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a valve casin a stuffingbox projecting therein, a va ve St/'em extendin throu' h Said box and into ,said valve casing, sai Stern projecting outwardly from Said box, a collar Surrounding said box in proximity to said casing and having an inwardly extending relatively thin web formed integral therewith and with Said box, said collar `having its outer Vertical face provided with graduat ions, a handle carried by the outer end of said Stem, a
