REGISTERING-FAUCET.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, N roHoLAs H. EILER,
. means whereby any quantity of liquid drawn will be accurately registered in the faucet.
Our present invention relates particularly to faucets employed for drawing spirituous and malt liquors, but may be advantageously employed to measure any fluid which may be passed through the faucet.
Our invention further aims to construct a faucet and to provide any suitable form of registering device that may be exposed to view or secretly secured within the faucet, as illustrated in the drawings. I
A still further object of our invention is to provide a faucet that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and com,- paratively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of ourimproved faucet, showing a portion of the same in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the turbine-wheel. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the interior cap. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of our invention. Fig. 6 isa perspective view of the stem. Fi 7 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of turbine-wheel which is used in connection with the stem as illustrated in Fi 6 of the drawings.
Inthe drawings't-he reference-numeral 1 indicates the ordinary faucet, which may be of the well-known construction or may be of any special construction desired, said faucet having formed therein an enlarged casing 2, having a curved inlet-port 3 and a curved outlet-port 4.
The reference-numeral 5 represents a turbine-wheel which snugly fits in the enlarged casing 2, said turbine-wheel having angularlydisposed blades 6, said turbine-wheel being preferably constructed of gutta-percha or like material, whichalfords several distinct advantages-namely, very little fluid-pressure will be required to rotate the wheel, and the buoyancy of the said material will afford distinct advantages, as will be readily understood. Furthermore, the material will not be detrimental to any form of fluids.
The reference-numeral 7 indicates a central opening formed in the turbine-wheeh'and in said central opening is secured a pin 8, which extends transversely of the opening or bore 7. This pin 8 is inserted by simply boring ahole in the hub of the turbine fromone side to a point near the opposite side, or the hole may, if desired, be extended entirely through the hub. This opening is adaptedto receive the shaft 9, which has formed in its lower end the slot 10, thereby permitting the lower end of the shaft to straddle the pin 8 and form a connection therewith.
The reference-numeral ll represents an interior cap carrying an enlarged annular flange 12, which is seated in the enlarged casing fz, said cap having formed therein a central opening lfhextending through the boss 15, which is e'xteriorly screw-threaded, as shown at 16, the said boss forming a stuffing-box, which is provided with a packingl7, the said screw-threaded boss 15 being also adapted to receive the interior-screw-threaded cap 18, which is likewise provided with a central opening through which the shaft 9 passes. The said shaft 9 carries a worm 19, operating a worm-gear 20, which in turn operates the register 21, the register and worm-gears being suitably mounted in a casing 22, the latter being interiorly screw-th readed, as shown at 23, and attached to the casing 2 of the faucet. Said casing 22 is likewise screwthreaded interiorly at its upper extremity, as shown at 24.
The reference-numeral represents a dial, which may be constructed of glass, mica, or any suitable transparent material.
The reference-numeral 26 represents a securingcap, said securing-cap carrying a screw-threaded flange 27, which is adapted to engage in the screw-threads 24c of the casing 22.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 the reference-numeral 25 represents an integral hub formed upon the turbine-wheel, having a slot 26' therein to receive the lower end 27 of the shaft 9', carrying the collar 28.
It will be seen that our improved faucet may be constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings, and the top cap may be transparent or may be constructed of metal. In the latter event it will be necessary to remove the cap when the register is to be consulted; but this latter construction will have advantages, as it provides a register that will be entirely bid from view.
The turbine-wheel, as stated, is constructed of a buoyant material in order that the same will be extremely light and susceptible to rotation under the very slight pressure. It will be observed that the inlet-port 3 enters the chamber in which the turbine-wheel is arranged at a tangent, and consequently the liquid is projected. toward one side of the wheel, causing the latter to rotate, the outlet being also at a tangent to the chamber in which the turbine is arranged and'receiving all liquid carried around by the turbine, so that none of the same will be carried backward by the plates of the latter.
The many advantages obtained by the use of our improved device will be readily apparentfrom the foregoing desoriptiom taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention,what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a faucet provided in its upper wall with an opening, of a casing secured to the said faucet and encircling the opening thereof, a turbine-wheel mounted in the said faucet and provided with a central bore, a horizontally-arranged pin within the bore of the said turbine-wheel, a shaft having its lower end arranged in the said bore and bifurcated to straddle said ping and a register arranged within the said casing and operatively connected to the said shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a faucet formed with an enlarged portion having an opening in its upper wall and provided with an externally-screw-threaded collar around said opening, a cap fitted in said opening, inlet and outlet ports for the chamber of said enlarged portion and communicating therewith tangentially of said chamber, a buoyant turbine-wheel arranged in the chamber of the enlarged portion and having a recess in its upper face, a shaft mounted in said recess and extending through the cap with a worm on its upper end, a casing threaded to the collar of the enlarged portion, and a registering mechanism arranged within said casing and actuated by said shaft, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a faucet provided in its upper wall with an opening, of a casing secured to the said faucet and encircling the opening thereof, a turbine-wheel mounted in the faucet, a shaft detachahly secured to the said turbine-wheel and having its upper end arranged in the said casing, a cap arranged within the said opening of the faucet and provided with an externally-screw-threaded boss encircling the said shaft, an internally-screwthreaded cap in engagement with the said boss, and a register arranged within the said casing and operatively connected to the said shaft.
4. The combination with the faucet having an opening, and provided with an externallyscrew-threaded collar around said opening, a cap fitting in said opening, a turbine-wheel arranged in said faucet below the said opening thereof, a shaft secured to the said turbine-wheel, and having its upper end extending through the said cap, a casing having its opposite ends screw-threaded and secured to the said screw-threaded collar of the faucet, a register arranged in said casing and opera tively connected to the said shaft, and a screwthreaded cap secured to the upper end of the said casing, substantially as described.
