Specification of Letters Patent.

f f SWINGING co'r.
Patented Sept. '19, 1.911.
Tol all 'whom ,it may concern:
l.le itknown that' l,v(i's'|.\v11 Nicwna'ru, a siibjectot.' the Emperor ot' .\ustria-llun wgigari, and a resident o'tE the borough of the lrolix, city. county, and State et New York,
have invented certain new and useful inipi`ovenients in Swinging (lots, ott which the following is a specification. tif-1 :Myoinvention relates to a swinging cot adapted jtior usc at'ter the 'fashion otI a ha1nmock, and `has for itsI object to cnabh` such a `cot vto be r adily `t'olded for shipment lor storage. also to give itgreat strength parr t icularly at the point which torni` a hinge or l5 pivot `t'or thejtfolding parte, and turther more to enable the cot to be used either as a susliended or swinging cot, or as a eot. rest'.- iugon the floor and irnxly kept in the, latter position. To thisI end, my invention consists ot eer'- tain` feature@l ot' constria-tion fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in theapl'anded claims. t t
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, in which-- Figure 1' is' a side elevation o't a. cot einbodyingiiny invention; lFig. Q is a top view thereof with parts in section; Fig. il is a ver tical. Section on line 3--3 ot' Fig. 2; and Fig.
:5o l .is a detail elevation, with parte in section, showing the connection ot thc 'ti'oldinglegs with 'the body of the cot.
ln the particular 'torni oit in v invention illustrated by the drawings, the body of the cot is rectangular when opened for use, and comprises two 'sections hinged Itogether at their inner ends about an axis parallel to the end bars A.. Each Section is composed of anv end bar A and two parallel side bars A', 4o with a cover B of canvas or other suitable fabric Sti-etched upon the frame termed by Said bars. The preferred way ot' attaching the cover B is shown in Fig. 3,.eaoh of the bare A, A being provided upon its outer face with a horizontal groove A ruiming lengthwise of the bar, the fabric being .t'olded into such groove and. held therein by a clamping strip C fitted into the groove and secured in any suitable manner, as by nailsl or tacks C. The fabric or cover B of each section is extended beyond the end bar ,A and issuitably 'fastened to a bar D, the projecting ends of which are provided with eyes E,'E. To the eyes are secured the ends Whose other ends are atits arch tached to hooks (l fixed to the. side bars A near their outer ends. 'lo the' eyes '.ll are secured the ends o'tl a transverse'chain lt" provided at its center with a ring l""` adapted to be held by stationary hooks such vas are usual tor suspending hannnocks. 'lfhe Side chains l take most ot` the tensile strain from the cover extensionsl or tlaps Bf, while the crossbar l) takes up the tranriverse strains. `For the sa ltc o't more convenient illustration, 65 tht` tlap l and chains l-`, li" at` the right# i hand side ot' l\`igs. ,l and 2 have been shown in a position which the never take in use, the let't hand portion indicating the position assumed b v thc ttap hen the cot is Sus- 74.) pended attcr the tashion ol a hannnock so as to serve as a swinging cot.
rlhe two sections ot' the cot body are Connected by a hinge o'tt special construction. llach of the .side bars .V in provided' with 75 two hinge plates ll', lli respectively, tastened in any suitable manner, as by rivets llt', and each ot theseplates has a projecting perforated tar or lug Il throughwhich extends the hinge rod J'. In order that the 80 adjacent. side bars ol' the two sections may he arranged in pertect valineinent when the cot is open. l prefer to employ the construction shown heet in Figs. l and il. according to which the platesI Il are let into the inner t'aees ot the bars of one section, and into the outer itaecs ot' the barS A ot the other section, while the platesl ll project. from `the outer t'aces ot the `side bars .V ot one section and troni the inner taces oi' the side. bars of 90 the other section. The central portion of the hinge rod J is arched so as to give the cot. great transverse strength, whether the cot be susl'ieuded or resting on the floor.
In the drawings, the center of the rod is about; twice as tar troni the canvas cover B as the pivoted end portions of the rod.
(')bviouslig to Secure the full advantage ot' the arching ot the hinge rod J, the plane olf the arch should be` vertical when the cot is open tor use, or perpendicular to the plane ot the cover B. On thecther hand, the openingI and 'folding 'movements of the cot. :section are liable-:to disturb the position otl the arch. lin order to insure auton'xatically the proper pci-pendicular position ot the arch of the rod .l when the cot is in use, l have provided pins J', projecting from the end liortions ot the rod in the plane of and arranged between the respeebars A..
ble by having one against the other,
tive countersunk plates H in such a manner In order that the cot may be used resting on the floor, I provide it with legs K, connected by braces K and pivoted to the inside of the side bars A, adjacent to the end The pivot bolt L is provided with a head L, and when not in use, the legs K are adapted to be folded between the side bars A as shown iu Fig. 2. ln order' that the legs may be held perfectly steady when the cot rests on them, they are provided with laterally projected locking pins K2 adapted to enter downwardly open slots K3 ou the side bars A. of the legs upon their pivots is made possi-- the pivots L pass through elongated openings K3 of the legs. l/Vhen the cot rests on the floor, the pivots L are nearthe lower; ends of the openings K3 andv the pins. K2 are within the slots A3, thus preventing the legs from turning on their pivots. Upon lifting one end of the cot, the pins at that end will become disengaged from the corresponding slots A3, so that the' legs can be folded inwardly, the operation being then repeated at the other end, and finally the two sections of the cot are folded as a hinge or pivot. When the cot rests on the floor, the rings F2 may be hung on the hooks D.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cot compri.s1 ag two sections adapted 'the cot is in use, and an arche A slight Vertical movement the rod J serving to lie in substantially the same plane when the cot is in use, an arched hinged rod connecting said sections, and means for keeping the plane of the rcdns archl perpendicular to the plane of the said sections when the cot .is in use.
2. A'cot comprising two sections adapted to lie in substantially the same lane when dp hinge rod connecting said sections and provided with a pin disposed in the plane of the rods arch and adapted to engage the said sections to keep the arch of the rod substantially perpendicular to the plane of said sect-ions when the cot is in use.
3. A cot comprising two sections adapted to lie in substantially the same plane when the cot is in use, and an arched hinge-rod connecting said sections and provided with. a projection adapted to engage the said sections to keep the rods perpendicular to the plane of said sections when the cot is in use.
4.. A cot comprising two sections adapted to lie in substantially the same plane when the cot is in use, a hinge rod connecting said sections and having straight alining end portions journaled in said sections, and an arched central portion, and projections on the end portions of the rod, extending between the'adjacent ends of the sections and adapted to keep the rods arch substantially perpendicular to the plane of said sections when the cot is in use.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSzTAVE A. NEWRATH'. W'itnesses:
JOHN LOTKA, II. B. YOUNKIN.
