CLOTHES-DRYING FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, .1911.
Application filed August 19, 1910. Serial No. 577,933.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Jol-IN IV. Hennen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Drying Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in View are: to provide a device of the character mentioned arranged for use within a dwelling room; and to provide a frame and guide therefor which is simple, economical, efficient and durable.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a drying frame constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a frame constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in its elevated and folded position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a vertical section, fragmentary in form, taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5--5 in Fig. 3.
The chief purpose for which the present invention is designed is to supply a practical drying frame for use within the con- Y fines of a dwelling. The design is particularly arranged to elevate the drying frame and the articles suspended thereon from the floor, and if the room in which the frame is installed permits, above the head of the occupants of the room to allow persons to pass beneath the frame and clothes. For this purpose a guide rod 10 is suspended from a hook 11, which is driven into the ceiling of the room or the structure thereof. The rod 10 is suspended from the said hook by means of a loop 12.
f Slidably mounted upon the rod 10 is a platform 13. The platform 13 is provided with laterally ,extended leaves 14, 14 to which it is secured by strap hinges 15, 15. It is to prevent binding upon the rod 1() that I have provided the rollers 1G, 16, arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Pvotally secured by means of pins 17,
17 upon the leaves 14, 14 are arms 18, 18. The arms 18, 18 are adapted to be radiated from the leaves 14, 14, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. However, when the loaves 14, 14 are raisedin folded position upon the rod 10, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the arms 18', 18 are folded together so that the device is held in a compact bundle, absorbing a minimum of space within the vroom in which it is installed. The arms 18 may be shaped or elongated to suit the needs of each particular installation.
The platform 13 is elevated or lowered by means of a cable 19. Both ends of the cable 19 are threaded through perforations 20, 20 formed in the platform 13, and are then anchored at 21, 21 to the said platform. The loops thus formed are extended above pulleys 22, 22 pivotally mounted on the upper end of the rod 10. The cable 19 is made fast to belaying pins 23, 23 mounted on the rod 10 and at the lower end thereof when the platform 13 and the parts connected therewith are elevated in raised position, either while carrying clothes or otherwise.
Vhile I have herein described the employment of the pulleys 22, 22, I do not wish to confine lnyself to the use of the same. The device may be practically operated when using instead of the said pulleys suitable eyelets or other devices through which the cable 19 may be reeved.
When not in use the frame, including the rod 10 and parts connected therewith may be lifted from engagement with the hook 11, and when folded close, stored away in a space of small compass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A clothes drying frame comprising a rectangular platform having formed therein a perforation centrally disposed; a plurality of leaf members hingedly mounted on said platform and adapted to fold upward thereon at the straight Sides thereof; a plurality of drying arms pivotally mounted on said leaf members and adapted to be disposed in fan-like arrangement and to be folded together when the platform to which said members are attached is lifted; a cylindrical guide rod; means for hanging said rod by the upper end thereof; a plurality of guide rollers mounted on said platform in oontaotual relation with said guide rod to prevent frietional Contact of said rod and said platform; and means for moving said platform from end to end of said rod.
2. A clothes drying frame Comprising a rectangular platform having formed therein a perforation centrally disposed; a plurality of leaf members hingedly mounted on said platform and adapted to fold upward thereon at the straight sides thereof; a plurality of pivotally mounted drying arms on said leaf members adapted to be disposed in fan-like arrangement and to be folded together When the platform to which said members are attached is lifted; a cylindrical guide rod; means for hanging said rod by the upper end thereof; a plurality of guide rollers mounted on said 'platform in eontaetual relation With said guide rod to prevent frictional contact of said rod 20 and said platform; a plurality of sheaves on said guide rod near the upper end thereof; and a cable reeved over said sheaves fiXedly attached to said platform, said cable being extended below said platform convenient to the hand of the operator.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speeieation in the presence of tWo subsoribing Witnesses.
