To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WALKER GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oreston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for suspending and Dis-- playing Lace Curtains, &c., of which the following is a specification. l

My object is to provide means specially adapted for the use of merchants in suspending and displaying lace curtains, table covers, bed-spreads, blankets, &c., as required for the convenience of customers in examining advantageously such goods and also as required to save labor to the exhibitor and the creasing, wearing, soiling and damages incident to the frequent handling of such large pieces of merchandise in a store.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of operative devices and suspending them overhead in a store room as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in a suspended position as required to be operated by a person on a floor beneath it. Fig. 2 is an underside view of the frame and rollers in the frame for supporting articles of merchandise suspended therefrom. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view that shows how curtains are placed across curtain bearers and'detachably fastened thereto to be suspended and raised and lowered at will by the exhibitor. Fig. 1 shows curved slots in the roller support into which journals at the ends of the springaetuated lifting rollers are placed. Fig. 5 is a view of one of the spring-actuated lifting rollers partly in section.

The numeral 10 designates a frame preferably made of gaspipe to be fixed to a ceiling in a store room or other suitable overhead support. I

Pairs of jointed frames 12 are hinged to a wooden cross piece 13 rigidly connected with the metal frame 10,,and the other end of each jointed frame is pivotally and slidingly connected with the parallel horizontal parts of the frame 10 by means of pulleys 14 and 15 as shown in Fig. 1. Cords 16 are attached to cross-bars 17 in the frames 12 near their joints and extended over pulleys 18 to depend therefrom within reach of a person on the floor below.

Spring-actuated pawls 19 are pivotally connected with the ceiling to engage studs 20 fixed in the frames 12 to support the frames in a horizontal elevated position and cords 21 are fixed to the pawls and extend over fixed pulleys 22 to depend therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1, as required for releasing the pawls 19 from the studs 20 and allowing the frames 12 to fold downward by force of gravity into the position shown by one of the frames 12 in Fig; 1 for the purpose of bringing the plurality of suspended curtains, or the like, close together. To elevate the frames 12 and to separate the articles suspended thereon pulling on the cords 16 will lift the jointed frames into horizontal position and separate for display the articles of merchandise suspended thereon.

Spring-actuated rollers 23 are detachably mounted in the parallel members of the jointed frames and cords 24 fixed thereto and wound thereon, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and to the cords 24 are fixed clasps 25 adapted to be manually operated for detachably connecting curtain bearers 26 and curtains 27 therewith by first doubling the curtains over the bearers as shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus set forth the purposes of my invention and the construction and function of each part the practical operation and utility thereof will be obvious.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-

1. In anapparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and the like, a frame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallel bars, a jointed frame hinged at one of its end to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotallyand slidahly connected with the parallel bars.

2. In an apparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and the like, a frame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallel bars, a jointed frame hinged'at one of its ends to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotally and slidably connected with the parallel bars by means of pulleys and links, to operate as set forth.

In an apparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and the like, a frame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallelbars, a jointed frame hinged at one of its ends to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotally and slidably connected with the parallel bars by means of pulleys and links and means to retain the jointed frame in an elevated horizontal position to operate as set forth.

i. In an apparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and the like, a frame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallel bars, a jointed frame hinged at one of its ends to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotally and slidably connected with the parallel bars by means of pulleys and links, studs in the sides of the jointed frame, spring-actuated pawls to engage the studs and cords fixed to the pawls and extended over direction pulleys to retain the jointed frame in an elevated horizontal position, to operate as set forth.

. 5. In an apparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and the like, a frame having; parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallel bars, a jointed frame hinged at one of its ends to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotally and slidably connected with the parallel bars, means for raising and retaining the jointed frame in an elevated and horizontal position and means for folding and lowering the jointed frame.

6. In an apparatus for suspending and displaying curtains and, the like, a frame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed to the parallel bars, a jointed frame hinged at one of its ends to the cross piece and the other end of the jointed frame pivotally and slidably connected with the parallel bars, means for raising and retaining the jointed frame in an elevated and horizontal position and means for folding and lowering the jointed frame, a plurality of spring-actuated rollers mounted in the jointed frame, cords connected with the rollers and curtain hearers connected with the cords.

7. In an apparatus for suspending; and displaying eurtains and thelilie, a i'rame having parallel horizontal bars, a cross piece fixed t0 the parallel bars, a jointed i'rame hinged at one 01 its ends to the cross piece and the other end 01' the jointed frame pivotally and slidahly connected with the parallel bars, means for raising and retaining the jointed frame in an elevated and horizontal position and means for folding and lowering' the jointed frame, a plurality of spring'netuated rollers mounted in the jointed frame, cords connected with the rollers and curtain bearers connected with the cords and clasps fixed to the cords to engage the curtain bearers.
