Description

L. 0. BROWN.
MEANS FOR SECURING BAIL BARS, &o., T0 BBOEPTAOLBS.
APPLICATION rILnn IBB. as, 1911.
1,003,697. P ented Sept. 19,1911.
WITNESSES: INT ENTER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS 0. BROWN, 0F TOLEDO, OHIO.
MEANS FOR SECURING BAILEARS, &c., T0 RECEPTAGLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Securing Bail-Ears, &c., to Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for securing bail-ears, handles and the like to pails, dippers and similar articles, and has for its object the provision of improved means of this character, which is simple, strong and durable in its construction, and capable of being easily and quickly applied, and which gives to the article a smoother and more finished appearance than do the forms heretofore used.
Further objects of my invention as well as the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof will be apparent from the following description, and while the invention, in its broader aspect, is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,--
F lgures 1 and 2 are outer and inner views, respectively, of a portion of a pail with my invention securing a bail ear thereto. Figs. 3 and 4 are different views of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of a pail or other similar article, 2 a bail ear attached thereto, and 3 a bail engaged to said ear.
The means comprising my invention for securing the bail ears or the like to the body 1 consists, in the present instance, of two rivets 4, 4 which are rigidly held in spaced relation by a cross-bar 5. The bar 5 preferably comprises a flat strip of sheet metal against which the heads of the rivets 4 are placed in proper spaced relation, and the side and end edges of the strip are then bent over upon the adjacent portions of the head flanges 6 of the rivets, as indicated Specification of Letters Patent.

at 7 and pressed closely thereto to preferably rigidly hold the rivets against relative movements.
In securing a bail-ear or the like to the body 1, the rivets 4 of a bar 5 are either forced through the metal of the body or inserted through registering apertures provided therein for such purpose and then through the rivet apertures of the bail-ear, the outer or free ends of the rivets being then upset to rigidly and strongly secure the assembled parts together.
WVith this construction it is apparent that the rivet holding bar not only materially enlarges and reinforces the rivet heads to prevent them from being torn through the metal of the body, but also covers the rivet heads and presents a perfectly smooth surface to the interior of the receptacle, the rivets being preferably and customarily inserted from the interior thereof. The pressure to which the bar and rivets are subjccted when operated on o secure a bail-ear to the receptacle tends to press the bar 5 into the metal of the body so that the inner exposed surfaces thereof are substantially flush. It is also found in practice that the provision of the rivet holding bar 5 places the work in better condition for galvanizing than is otherwise the case.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to its use in securing bail ears to pails or the like, it is not restricted to such use as it is intended for use in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate.
I also Wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific constructionor arrangement of the parts, except in,
so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The combination with a receptacle and a member for attaching thereto, of a plurality of rivets for securing the member to the receptacle, and a bar-like part covering and rigidly connecting the rivet heads both when secured to the receptacle and separate therefrom, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a receptacle and a member for attaching thereto, of a plurality of rivet-like members having heads, and a sheet metal .bar lying flat against the outer sides of said heads with its edges spun thereunder to connect and carry the members, said bar serving both as a covering for the heads and as a reinforcement for the receptacle material.
3. The combination With a receptacle and a memberfor attaching thereto, of a plu rality of rivets having flange-like enlargements at one end thereof, and a strip of sheet-like material seating against the enfor the rivets.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
