CHILDS FOLDING SULKY.
s ecification of Letters Eatent. Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Application filed m i, 1911. Serial No. 626,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI,"Wn.LIs E. LINDLE-Y, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walla Walla, in the county of Walla Walla and State of Washington, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Foldin Sulkies, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention-is an improved foldable vehicle, especially a folding sulky for use by and for children, the object of the invention being to provide an improved vehicle of this kind which is strong and durable,
15 may be readily manufactured-at a minimum cost, and which is capable of being very compactly folded and disposed for transportation or storage.
The invention consists in the construction,
' combination and arrangement of devices I hereinafter described and claimed.
In. the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation ,of a folding sulky constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2ois a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan-of the'same; Fig. i is a similar view, showing the partsfolded; and Fig. 5
is an inverted plan, showing the parts folded. The body or seat lof my improved sulky is here shown as rectangular in form. 011 the. bottom thereof, near the sides and at .suitable distance from .the front side oftbe seat or "body, are blocks 2, 3, each of which is provided with a pair. of downwardly eittendin'g spaced lugs, the lugs of the block 2 being indicated at 4c and those of the block 3 bein indicated at '5 and being longer, in vertica extent, than the lugs 4:. Hangers 6"and 7, which are unequal linilength, are
' res ctively pivotally mounted at the upper en between the lugs of the blocks 2, 3, thle pivot bolts of the said hangers being'ind cated at .8, 9. Hence, the hanger 6 is adapted to be extended downwardly ttrom the seat or body and disposed in avertical position and is, also adapted to be folded-transversely across and to-lie a ainst the bottom of the body. The hanger is also ada ted for movement angularly in a vertical p ane and when folded lies out of the lane of the hanger 6.
Each hanger is rovi ed'nearits lower end.
with an outwar 1y extending spindle 10 and the vehicle whee s 11 are mounted on the said s'pin'dlcs..- Owing to thefdiflerenc'e in length between thedugs 4: and the .l 1 1gs o,
I after the hanger 6 has been folded against the bottom of the body, the hanger 7 may then be folded and disposed parallel therewith and with its wheel bearing on the wheel of the hanger 6. The hangers are provided on their inner sides with rearwardly directed clips 12. s
The pole or tongue 13 comprises the rearsection 14 and the front section .15. The
meeting ends of the said sections arebeveled and the said sections are hinged together at the joint by a hinge 16 which is secured on thelower side of the tongue and hence the section 15 is adapted to be extended from and in line with the section 14 and is also adapted to be folded upon the same. I sleeve clamp 17 is fitted on the ton e and is movable so that it may cover the 30int between the two sections, so as to. secure them together and may be moved inwardly on the front section 15v to clear the section 14 and allow the latter to be folded on the section 14. The rear section of the pole or tongue is provided on its upper side, at asuitable distance from its rear end, with a rearwardly directed clip 18.
A foot rest 19 is carried by the tongue. This foot--rest;cop1prises a supporting bar 20, whichfihas its rear end pivotally con-, nected' to the rear. section of the tongue as "at 21, is provided at a suitable distance from ,7
its front end with a cross bar 22 which forms a rest for the childs feet, the front end of the said bar 20 being pivotally connected as at 23- to the lower end of asup porting bar 24, the upper end of the said supportin "bar being pivotally connected as at 25 to t e under side of the clamp .sleeve 17. I also provide a locking bail 26.1. This is substantially, U-shaped and has the 11 per ends of itsarms pivotally connected as at 27 to theunder side of the body or seat. The crossbar 28 of this. locking bail is provided at its center with a cranked portion 29 for engagement with the clip 18 of the tongue, the side or end bars of the locking bail being adapted for engagement with the clips 12 of the hangers so as to lock the hangers in place when vertically disposed and the sulky is in use.
.xA pivot bolt 29. is connected to the seat or body near thefront side thereof and at a point midway'between its sides and has a downwardlvextending' yoke 30,.between the arms of which the" rear seotion14 of'the tongue is pivoted as at 31. Hence, the tongue is connected to the seat or body for transverse angular movement so that ls-nay be disposedin engaged position with the locking bail as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 or it may be swung transversely and dis posed across the front of the body when the sulky is Ifolded, as shown in Fig. 5.
On the upper side of the seat is a rail,
' corners with oii'set loops 36, which maybe engaged with the rear section 33, when the latter is set up, and hence caused to lock the rear section in place and it will be understood, that the upper corners of the rear section also lot-k the side sections in place so that the said folding sections of the rail of theseat are interlocking.
While I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my invention I will have it understood hat minor changes may be made in the form, proportions and construction of the several partswithout departing from the spirit of my invention, and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim:
1. In a vehicle of the class described, the
combination of a body, hangers pivotally connected to the body and loldable under and across the same, said hangers having:- spindles for the wheels,'-a tongue pivotally, connected to the body and having a rear-Q wardly extending portion, and a locking bail pivotally connected to the body and adapted to engage the hangers and tongue to' lock them in set up position.
'2. In a vehicle of the class'described, the
combination of a body, a tongue connected thereto for angular movement and having a rearwardly extending portion provided with an attaching device, hangers pivotally connected to the body and foldableacross' the under side thereof, the said hangers being provided with outwardly extending" spindles for the wheels and also provided,
on their inner sides, with attaching devices,
and a locking bail connected to the body and adapted to be engaged by the'attaching devices of the tongue and hangers to lock the tongue and hangers in set up position.
3. A vehicle of the class described having a tongue comprising a rear section and a front section pivotally connected together so that the front section may be folded against the rear'section, a clamping sleeve movable on the" tongue across the joint between lhe sections thereof and-a foot rest comprising a lower bar. pivotally connected at its rear end to the rear section of the tongue, and a supporting bar having its lower end pivotally connected to the front end of the lower banand its upper end pivotally connected to the clamping sleeve. In testimony whereof]. hereunto alhx my signature 111 the presence o'li two witnesses.
