TONGUE-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,780, dated October 30, 1888.

Application filed June 4, 1888. Serial No. 275,959. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CRAWFORD R. GAN- TERBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownwood, in the county of Brown and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved to nguesupport adapted to be applied to any ordinary vehicle, and combining simplicity and cheapness of manufacture with strength and effectiveness; and it consists in acertain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device applied in the operative position to a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the supports detached from the vehicle. Fig. 3 is a view of a slightly-modified form of the support applied to the vehicle. Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form in which the spring-coils are omitted. Fig. 5 is a front view.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the front axle; B B, the hounds which project in rear of the axle; O, the tongue mounted between the front ends of the hounds.

E E represent the supports,which comprise the side arms, F, and the transverse front arms, G, perpendicular or approximately perpendicular to the side arms,and preferably formed integral therewith. Standards H are formed on the inner extremities of these arms G, and they are provided at their upper ends with the hooks or loops I, for a purpose to be explained. The rear ends of the side arms are provided with the engaging-arms K, which comprise the downwardly-bent bars 7c, the hori zontal transverse bars 7c, passing under the hounds, and the vertical bars 7t", passing up on the inner sides of the said hounds. The intermediate points of the side arms bear on the upper side of the axle, or any other suitable support attached thereto, and between the front and rear sections, f f, thereof are arranged the spring-coils f, and the front arms, G, extend over and bear on the upper side of the tongue and comprise the sections 9 y, connected by the spring-coils g. The arms G both extend beyond the center of the vehicle, and therefore cross each other on the tongue, and the supporting chain L passes at its center under the tongue, and is attached at its ends to the books or loops on the upper ends of the standards H. The tongue cannot drop below the horizontal position, as it is held up by the arms of the supports; but it is capable of a vertical swaying movement, owing to the elasticity of the said arms and the sprin'gcoils which connect the sections thereof.

Fig. 3 shows a slightly-modified form of the support, which is attached to the hounds in front of the axle; and Fig. 4 illustrates a modified form of the support, in which the springcoils are omitted for simplicity.

Having described my invention, I claim The herein-descrilmd tongue-support, having the side arms, F, comprising sections ff, connected at their adjacent ends by the springcoils f, the hooks K on the rear ends of the said arms, the lateral transverse arms G, comprising the sectionsg connected at their adjacent ends by the spring-coils g, the standards H on the inner ends of the arms G, and the supporting'chain L, connecting the upper ends of the said standards and passing under the tongue, substantially as specified.
