I SLEIGH OR 13013 FOR RIDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 2, 1908. Serial No. 430,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID Pnnnn'rrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Garden, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful pair of sleighs or bobs for riding, to be used in this section or where the snow is deep and the roads rough through the greater part of the winter season.
This invention relates to improvements in running gears for sleighs, and has for an obj ect to provide means so that the runners are free to oscillate independent of each other, and to construct the said runners whereby a buggy body or the boX of a lightwagon may be attached thereto with the springs which are attached directly to the coupling or reach which connect the sleigh bobs together.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a top plan view of two bobs coupled to each other, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the front bob showing a buggy spring attached thereto, Fig. 4 is a rear view of the rear bob showing a buggy spring attached thereto, Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the manner of fastening the runners of each bob together, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the coupling, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the rear runners.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a front bob 1 comprising spaced parallel runners 2 which may be of the usual form. Each runner is provided with an inwardly extending beam 3 connected to the inner sides of the runners by brace rods 4. The said beams are each provided with a plate 5 having an upstanding end portion 6 so that they may be brought into alinement with each other and engaged by a bolt 7 to effectively hold the runners 2 in their correct position as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The beams 3 are provided with spaced hinges 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. A rear bob is shown at 9 and the runners 9 are also provided with inwardly directed beams 10 upon which are supported blocks or the like 11, two of the said blocks being preferably provided for each beam, and as shown, each block is provided with a hinge 12 similar to the hinges 8 upon the front bob. The beams 10 are provided with plates 13 having upstanding end portions 14 adapted to-be engaged by a bolt 15, thus providing a hinged connection so that the runners of each bob may be moved longitudinally.
A coupling member is shown in detail in Fig. 6 of the drawings and comprises a frame 16 formed from transversely extending beams or bars 17, 18 and 19, the said bars 18 and 19 being connected at their ends by longitudinally extending bars or beams 20. A longitudinally extending pole or reach 21 is connected to the beams 17 18 and 19, and at the front end the said pole or reach is pivotally connected to a bar or beam 22. The bars 17 and 22 have disposed therebetween a fifth wheel 23 which may be of the desired construction, as I do not desire to limit myself to the one herein shown. Suitable brace rods 2 1 connect the beam or bar 18 to the pole or reach 21 to provide a rigid construction. The bar 22 is provided adjacent to the ends thereof with forwardly projecting cars 25 adapted to receive therebetween the arms 26 of the yoke 27 at the inner end of a draft tongue 28 which may be provided with an evener 29 for the attachment of two draft animals.
Upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be apparent that the bar 19 is connected to the hinges 12 and that the bar 22 is connected to the hinges S which construction thus allows somewhat of an oscillatory movement of the runners as will be readily appreciated. Strong helical springs are connected at their forward ends to the bar 18, and at the rear ends the said springs are connected to the runners 9 of the rear bob so that the said rear bob will always assume a position shown in Fig. 2 and to also provide means for yieldingly supporting the runners 9 to the coupling member.
The rear spring 30 of the vehicle body is shown in Fig. at of the drawings, and is detaohably connected by means of clips 31 to the bar 19 of the coupling member. A front spring 32 is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and is connected to the bar 17 by means of Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
clips 33 similar to the clips 31. By this construction a vehicle body may be attached to the coupling member omitting the axles of the vehicle, Which heretofore have been found objectionable in that they protrude from the side of the sleigh and impede the progress in deep snows. The bolts 7 and 15 which pivotally connectthe plates 5 and 13 afford means so that the runners of the bobs may move independently of each other. A running gear as herein set forth and described, is extremely simple in construction and is such that vehicle bodies of ordinary construction may be attached to the sleigh bobs in an effective manner and Without injury to the vehicle bodies.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is
A running gear of the class described comprising a front bob, a rear bob, brackets carried by the runners of each bob, bolts en gaged with the brackets, a coupling member hingedly connected to the said bobs so that they are free to oscillate, a fifth Wheel for the front bob, draft pole connections carried by the said coupling member, and spring means connecting the runners of the rear bob with the said coupling member.
