WINDOW-FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that l, CARL A. KIND. citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Tmproveuients in lVindow-l asteners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to add and improve upon my invention as set out in my application filed June 8 1909, Serial Number 500,969 whereby the fastener therein described, is rendered burglar-proof.

l t consists essentially in modifying the form of the standard and also in attaching to the locking member, a shield for shielding the dog when the window is closed and in closing up a portion of the space between the standards whereby the dog is secured against operative attacks by wire or otherwise either from the inside or outside of the window.

In the following specification and drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof there will be fully set out and illustrated such additions and improvements as l desire to have protected by Letters Patent.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the part of the fastener to be attached to one sash when closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of Fig. 1 when open. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the locking member with shield attached. Fig. & shows the locking member wit-hoi t the shield. lfig. 5 is a plan view of the dog. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line m-c of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the fastener complete on the window sashes and locked. S is a modified form of Fig. 3.

In the drawings, designates the frame which is composed of two side plates 4; and united together at the top by a bar 6, and bent out at the base into feet 8 through which the device is securely fastened to the upper sash of the window by the screws 10. In the rear at the bottom the two plates 4 and 5 are also united together by an integral piece 12 leaving a slot 14: extending from the bar 6 to the piece 12, and the plate 5 extends a short distance forward of the plate 4. Between these two plates 4 and 5 near their top is pivoted a dog 15. This dog is-fixed on the pivot pin 16 or removahly fixed by having a square hole 18 therethrough, and the pin 16 square at where it is within the opening 18 in the dog. plied with an operating handle or button 22. The dog is rounded at its lower edge 24: and straight along its edges 25, 26, and the edge is made thicker or heavier. Also there is cut out an opening 28 to lighten the dog on the side 26.

The locking member 30 consists of a bar or plate of general rectangular shape which is provided with a slot 32 in one edge and beveled crosswise from the slot 32 to one end at 34. The plate 5 extends into the slot 32. To prevent the dog 15 from being operated upon by wire or otherwise from the outside or inside of the window, when the window is locked, there is provided a shield 35 which is attached to the locking member on both sides of the slot 32, or it may be cast int-egral with the locking member 30. The shield projects to and contacts with both plates 1 and 5 and with the plates 4 and 5 entirely conceals the dog 15. The locking member may be securely fastened to the lower window sash by screws or there may be a loop 36 secured to the window sash by screws 88, and the locking member 30 may slide in the loop as shown in Fig. 8, in which case the loop is cut away at 40 sutlicient to allow the shield to enter the cut away when the locking member slides along under the loop. There may also be provided a stop 42 to limit the movement of the locking member in the loop. The slot 32 is beveled on the under sides so as to always guide the plate 5 into engagement with it.

The manner of operating my device is substantially as follows :Starting with the window closed and locked with the dog 15 entirely concealed from view with part in the shield and part between the two plates 4. and 5, and the edge of the plate 5 in the slot 32 and the dog engaging the beveled portion 34 of. the locking member, the operator grasps the button 22 and turns the dog until the notch in the dog has engaged the bar 6 and holds it in an upright posi tion. Then the operator is able to raise the sash on which is the locking member 30 and the window is opened. As the sash is raised it engages the edge 25 of the dog and throws it out of engagement with the bar 6, and its weight will bring it down into locking position. When the window is to be closed or locked the operator brings down the sash having thereon the locking member 30, and as it comes down it strikes against the edge 26 of the dog and forces it farther back between the standards l and 5, and as the locking member comes down on a plane with the fastener the dog will come forward and engage the beveled portion 34 of the locking member and securely hold it in the locking position, and the two sashes will then be locked together.

It will now be seen that the dog is entirely covered. It cannot be gotten at from either edge as the sides 4- and 5 entirely cover it in connection with the shield 35 and there is no place where a wire could be inserted to operate the dog. Even if the wire should be inserted in the slot 14:, it would only force the dog into a more rigid contact with the beveled portion of the looking member, and it would be practically impossible to pry the sashes apart, because the plate 5 is within the slot 82 of the locking member 30.

Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. In a window fastener, a frame composed of two plates, a bar for uniting the plates together at the top, a dog pivoted in the frame and provided with a slot adapted to engage the bar that unites the frame, a locking member provided with a beveled portion adapted to be engaged by the dog and lock the sashes of the window together, and a shield secured to the locking member and contacting with the frame and with the frame conceal the dog when the window is locked.

In a window fastener, a frame composed of two plates narrower at the top and Copies of this patent may be obtained for united together at their base near one end, a bar for uniting the plates at the top, a dog provided with a slot adapted to engage the bar and hold the dog in an inverted position outside of the plates, a locking member provided with a slot adapted to be engaged in said slot by one of the plates of the frame, and a shield secured to the locking member and with the plates conceal the dog when the sashes are locked together.

3. In a window fastener, a frame composed of two plates united together at their base and provided with feet through which they are secured to one of the sashes of the window, said frame narrower at the top than at the base, and one of the plates projecting slightly in advance of the other, a bar uniting the plates at the top, a dog secured to a pin pivoted in the frame and provided with a slot adapted to engage the bar that unites the plates together and said dog curved on its lower edge, means for rotating the dog by the pivot pin, in combination with a locking member provided with a slot and beveled at one end where it is adapted to be engaged by the curved portion of the dog and lock the sashes together, and a shield secured to the locking member and adapted to engage both plates of the frame and with the plates conceal the dog when the window is locked.
