Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1909.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Serial No. 489,288.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that T, JOHN WAL ER, Jr., of Farringdon House, Warwick Lane, Lon don, England, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Looks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to locks, more particularly to looks for loose leaf'books, temporary binders, tiles, albums and the like and the invention has for its object to provide an improved device whereby said loose leaf book or the like may be protected against opening by unauthorized persons.
A lock constructed in accordance with this invention is provided with spring pressed bolts adapted to engage with serrated pillars mounted upon plates destined to be attached to the loose leaf book or the like said spring pressed bolts being moved out from engagement with the teeth 011 the pillars when desired by means of a key. The serrated pillars are preferably provided internally with springs whereof the tension constantly tends to cause the serrations to co-act with the aforesaid bolts when in the locked position, and to force the pillars outwardly of the look upon the withdrawal of the bolts from the serrations. The bolts are formed in two parts one of which is spring pressed into engagement with the serrated pillars, and the other part is key operated and is adapted to be slid so as to disengage the spring pressed part from the serrations.
Tn the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows a sectional elevation of the lock in the open position and Fig. 2 is a section on line AA Fig. 1.
(Z Z) are spring pressed bolts adapted to engage with serrations in the pillars c 0, (Z (Z respectively, said pillars being mounted upon plates 6 f destined to be attached to the loose leaf book or the like.
9 is the lock casing; h h are pins fixed thereon; j j y' j are springs confined between the walls of the pillars o 0, (Z (Z and the pins 72 passing through slots Z: in the pillars.
m n are key operated bolts, 0 p are springs. There is a certain amount of play at a and o between the spring pressed bolts and the key operated bolts which permits the spring pressed bolts to ride over the serrations on the pillars when the device is being closed and after the key operated bolts have been returned to the position shown in the drawings.
g Q are spring controlled tumblers, r r are stops for limiting the displacement in one direction of the key operated parts m a, their movement in the opposite direction being limited by the pivot pins 3 of the tumblers which pass through slots in said keyoperated parts.
The pillars c c are provided at their inner ends with stops whereby to limit their outward movement, the pillars (Z (Z only being free to become disengaged from the look.
In operation, assuming the lock to be in a closed position, in order to open the loose leaf book or the like the key is inserted in the lock at If and is turned so as to raise the tumblers and move the parts we a of the bolts so that they bear against the spring pressed bolts b at a and move them out of engage ment with the serration on the pillars c 0, (Z (Z. The springs j 7' 7' which are compressed within said pillars expand and cause the plates 6 f to be moved outwardly of the lock; the plate f carrying the pillars (Z (Z and attached to one cover of the loose leaf book or the like is then free to be removed clear of the lock so as to open the book. The key is then turned to the initial position returning the parts 121- n and the tumblers g g to their original positions, and enabling the springs 0 p to re-setthe bolts Z), In order to lock the book the pillars (Z (Z are inserted and together with the pillars 0 are pressed the desired distance into the lock, the serrations on said pillars riding over the bolts Z) which are free to move relatively to their key operated parts.
By providing a series of serrations upon the pillars o 0, (Z (Z a maximum and a minimum together with a number of intermediate positions of adjustment of the lock are obtained.
It will thus be seen that a lock is provided for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums, and the like, whereof the construction is such that the look when brought into use may be adjusted in accordance with the bulk or contents of the loose leaf book or album whereon the lock is mounted, thus obviating undue strains being imposed either upon the book or the lock and providing ample and efficient security against the book or album being opened by any unauthorized persons.
In a lock made in accordance with this invention, the body of the lock normally remains in a central position, or in a higher or lower position if desired.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums and the like, the combination of plates destined to be attached to the book, slotted pillars on said plates, teeth on said pillars, a lock casing, pins fixed to said casing over which said slotted'pillars are adapted to ride, springs Within said pillars and bolts within. the casing adapted to be pressed against the teeth of the pillars,
2. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums, and the like, the combination of a lock casing having pins thereon, plates destined to be attached to the book, a pair of slotted pillars on each plate adapted to ride over said pins, the pillars on one plate entering said casing, and confined against removal therefrom, and the other pllla-rs being adapted to enter said casing, teeth on-said pillars, stops on the pillars of one plate to limit their outward movement, springs within said pillars adapted to act on said pins, and bolts within the casing adapted to be pressed against the teeth of the pillars.
3. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums, or the like, the combination of plates, slotted pillars on said plates, teeth on said pillars, a lock casing receiving said pillars, pins fixed to said casing adapted to fit the slots in said pillars, and bolts connected to said casing for engaging said teeth.
4. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums of the like, the combination of plates, at tumbler lock, independently adjustable connections between both ofsaid plates and said lock, said lock having means for locking both of said plates in varying positions with reference to itself.
5. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums or the like, the combination of plates, slotted and toothed pillars carried by both plates, and a lock having means for adjustably engaging teeth of both sets of pillars, and said lock having pins coacting with the slots in said pillars.
6. In locks for loose leaf books, temporary binders, files, albums or the like, the combination of plates, a lock, adjustable connect-ions betweenboth of said plates and said lock, said lock having means for locking both of said plates in varying positions with reference to itself, and stops adapted to prevent the complete detachment of said look from one plate.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN WALKER, JUNIOR.
