MANIFOLD SALFS QR ORDER BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 13, 1910.
Paton ted serial No. 597,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO citizen of the United States of Ame'ica, residing at Shelby, in the county of Richland and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Sales or Order Books of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements in manifold sales or order books and has especial reference to manifold sales or order books wherein triplicate copies of the order or'sales memoranda are to be made si1nultaneously, to wit z-an original and two copies. f
One of the objects of my invention is to S. GAFCH, a
construct a triplicate order or sales book i bined original and whereby the quantity of tissue sheet used in the construction of the triplicate order or sales books now in use can be reduced with'-. out in any way affecting the efficiency or use of. said books.
Another object is to provide means of clamping the triplicate book of tissue sheets in'a fixed relation to the combined original and duplicate pad.
A. further object is to provide facilities for dropping the triplicate tissue sheets,'after the n'iemoraud a shall have been'in'dorsed thereon underneath the combined original and duplicate sheets without handling the tissue sheets.
Another objectof my invention is to pro'- vide means of making a simple and compact form of order or sales book including the cover, that is thoroughly practical and that can be maninulated conveniently and rapidly.
To-this end my improved book comprises one combined. pad of original and duplicate leaves and a book of tissue sheets'w-hich is clamped in position to fold over and overlie the duplicate and original pad at right angles thereto and means to hinge the comduplicate pad from the side of the cover.
I accrm'iplish' these and other objects by means of the arrangement the several parts hereinafter described and illu rated in the; accompanying drawings, in 1 ch ...gurc 1 represents a perspective view of my improved order or sales book showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 is an end secand assemblage of y sidehinge' 9 from the side indicated by l ak-I l.
. to engage with the on the fixed part of the clamp and the apes:
tnres 1n theadetacliable part. with the cover of the tissue sheet: interposed between said parts. Fig. is-an end view of my ims proved book showing its compact and con venient form. j
In the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the lids of the cover flexibly connected by a hinge 3. An auxiliary lid 4.--is flexibly connected or hingedtc 1e side 4 of the part 2 by the 2 Land lie upon the used tissue sheets after they have beenzfdropped below lid as show'tn 'in Fig. 2. p
A. combined pad 5 of folded original and duplicate leaves is fastened to auxiliary hinged lid thy a holder 6 or in any other well known manner. A double faced can bon sheet 7' boundtogether with the pad and is adapted to-be interposed between the folded original and duplicate leaves.
Adjacent to the pad of leaves 5 a plate 8 angular in cross section is rigidly attached to the part 2 ofthe cover (by any well known fastening means) and forms part of the clamping means for holding the tissue book. Conical projections 9. and 9 are pressed from the body of the angular plate 8. The clamping bar-1O has both ends 11 and 12 bent inwardly parallel with the body leaving open spaces 12 and 13 which on gage the clamping Ap'ertures 15 and 16 are provided in the bent ends and are adapted projections 9 and 9 which securely retain the place. vThe plate 8 is preferably made of spring metalto permit the bent ends to spring over the project-ions to engage with the apertures in the detachable part 10 of the clamp.

In" use, the back, cover of the tissue book is inserted in; the spaces 12 and13. of the clampgtar 10 which is. then'made to engage .w1th. the upstandingfpart "of the plate 8, and the tissue book is rigidly held with its .back (Sr-binding. parallel with the side ofj' folded fupgoverthetissue, when-1 bookis it-will be noted that there is no necessity of eating pad,

. In the manipulationonuse of the book, each original leaf 20 of the pad 5. 'is raised and the carbon sheet '7 is made .to lieupon theduplicate leaf 21, the tissue or triplicate sheet l Z is then folded or laid uponthe carbon'sheetand the-original leaf is then laid upon the tissue sheet and thebook is then reaclyfor use. y
When the original and duplicatefcopies are made, the part 4; is first lifted and turned to. the right, 'thus removing the tissue leaf" fromits {position and dropping it underneath the part 4 which is 'returned to place; theoriginal of thenextunused' slip is then -'withdrawn the used original-and duplicate torn. out of the pad, the' next unused tissue folded over the carbon, the unused original;-

I The compact form of the bookandcover when closed is shown in Fig. 5. Attention is called to the fact that by the peculiar constructio'r'i of my book {it is not necessary to have the-cover much larger than the dupli in order to. protectfthefends of the leaves ofthe tissue book; also that the same result'willbe secured if the clamping device isused oneit'her side or' at the top'. edge of the p'ad Stand the tissue leaves when used are .entirelfytjcovered and protected by the-r t My cover-differs from those now used folded in from the side in that the auxiliary lid. is hinged at the side" of the duplicating portion; this provides for movement of the .auxiliary lid parallel back of the-tissue book and the ten sion" or, forceexerted to remove the tissue applied uniformly along the entire length ofthe'tissue leaf, while with the type of cover having the: lid hinged at the. bottom, the force is applied progres the hottomof the tissue'leaf and gives a tearing straini enden up thesides -and across the leaves of the aged or wrinkled.
whereby .the ends lel with the sides of the cover to be also reduced in size,- renderis an important matter [the peculiar constructiofiofithecover.
level with the top n; i difi u t k r t e iswe. fr m being torn, especially when rapidly 1nan1pulated.
Heretofore -tissue books for triplicate purposes have been secured by inserting the back cover inxa pocketand it was necessary to make the, *tissue book from '2'." to 1 wider thanlthepad withwhich it wasused in order toinsure. the tissueleaves reaching from the=bottom, where the back was located,
and 'asithe. pad'was used and the tissue .leaveswere lifted and droppedyunder the pad of duplicate and original sheets, the tissue leaves projected farther over thoside of the-duplicating pad by virtue of the fact that the distance from the'back to the leaves in use'was gradually decreased until, when the last sheet of the'pad-Iwas used, the tissue sheets projected materially I beyond the duplicatingportion of the pad. When a tissue leaf was:usedland-dropped under the part carrying the duplicatingpad, the extra width of the tissue leaf caused it to project beyond the. side of the pad opposite tothe binding}. This necessitated "the covers being much wider than the duplicating portion of the pad, as it was necessary to'have the covers project 'suthcientlyto prevent the used portion of the tissuefrombecoming time My cover differs from those in present use in that it is hinged to fold from the side of the tissue leaves are protected against mussing nor tearing and are" obscured from the view of customers without materially enlarging the cover.
vBy mymethod of securing the tissue book in the cover, the backis rigidly heldparalthe duplicating pad, only sufiicient space being given-to'pennit all the tissue leaves tofpassbetween the clamping bar aud t-he seaside of the auxiliary lid.
' I am, enabled to materially In this manner. reduce t-l16 S1ZG-Of t .e tissue book enabling ing it easier tom'anipulate without-tearing the tissue leaves, and more convenient to be carried in the pocketof the user.
, The reduction'imsize of the tissue book to the consrimenwvho usually files the tissue books for reference, and in a large business where many thousands of salesare made, the space saved is a very important item.
i The cover of the tissue book may be pr1nted with suitable wording and when removed from the book, .'t is inproper shape forprotected against wrinkling or tear mg by further called to' the fact that in certain type of books may be deslred to hold the back of the tissue book at a polnt of the duplicating pad,
