Letters Patent N 100,336, dated March 1, 1870.
IMPROVED BROOM.
The Schedule referred 'to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable` others skilled in lthe art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of my improved broom;
Figure 2 is au end view ofthe same; and
Figure 3, a detached view of the band or wire.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu the several ,figures of the drawings.
Itis a fact well known to those who have occasion to use-corn brooms, that when long broom-corn is employed in their manufacture-the broom is too soft and yield to perform its ofiice eciently, and for this reason the corn must be cut short in order to render it sufficiently stiff. This necessitates a comparatively large waste of corn, besides causing the broom to wear rapidlv.
My invention has for its object to produce a broom from long corn which shall be as stiii` as those madeV from short corn, whereby the full length of the corn is retained, and the broom conseqnentlymade to wear much longer.
It consists in the improved broom formed by the combination of the supporting or strengthening-band or wire with the brush and broom-head, as will'be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings- A is the broom-head composed of wood or other proper material, in which the brush B is wired, as shown, that is to say, the corn is inserted in holes formed in the head, and secured therein by the wires. The handle may be secured to the head in any proper manner. In this instance it is adapted to screw into a hole formed centrally in the head, as shown.
D is a wire or baud embracing the brush B a short distance below the head A, and supported from the head by the short wires or supports E.
The band may be supported at a greater or Vless distance from the head, as necessity requires, by increasing or diminishing the length of the support-s E.
By this construction the brush is strengthened or made sti at triing expense, and renders long as efiectivc as short broom-corn, besides causing the broom to wear a much greater length of time.
Having thus described my invention, l
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved broom, constructed as described, of the head A with the brush B attached, and encircled with the wire or band D connected to the head A by the short straight wire supports E, as herein shown and described. l
