Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Application tiled October 19, 1910. Serial No. 537,915.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it lcnown that I, GIL-\ZIELLA M. CHAM- mox n, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to abdominal supporters, and more particularly to devices of this character combining the properties of an ordinary abdominal supporter and a truss, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the 'efii cicncy and utility of devices of this character.
, Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character havin pads adjustably connected therewith and at apted supporter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character havin I an improved and simplified construction 0 the pad portion of the device.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and comdescribed and particularly pointed out in the in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had tothe acmn panying drawings, wherein like charactersof refer ence denote corresponding parts in 'the sev- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a su porter constructed m accordance with t- 1e Invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the one of the improved pads; Fig. 4, an elevation viewed from the inside, on a reduced scale; ltlg. 5, a rear view of one of the pads detached; and Fig. l, a sectional detail viewof a portion of one of the pads, illustrating the manner of applying the holding tapes thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the device is shown as comprising a body 10 having a central V shaped recess 11 formed with curved contiguous edges and wit! eyelets 12 and lacings 13 and also provided with smaller V shaped recesses 14 and 15, spaced from the whalebonc reinforcerheh central recess- The smaller recesses are rovidcd with eyelets 16 and 17 near their e ges and united by lacings 18 and 19. The recesses all (1)611 upwardly, and provide for w fitting the obvious. The larger central recess 11 is provided with. a protecting coverin fla. indicated at 20, on the innerside o the bod while the smaller recesses l and 15 are lkewise provided with interior covering flaps 21 and 22 respectively. The body 10is provided near its outer ends with reinforcing strips 22 and further supported b diagonal sup- 7 porting'strips 23 and 24. ortersupportmg strips 25 are connected to the lower portion of the body beneath the diagonal strips, as shown. By this means, the lower portion ody to the person, as will be of the body and-the ends of the same are strengthened and sup orted. The back portion of the body is illustrated in Fig. 2 andis shown as comprising a fabric member40 rovided at its intermediate portion with w alcbonetreinforcements 41 so so that when the device is applied, sa l will"form i Sup port for the back of the wearer. This baolg portion is united to the front'portionby buckles and straps, indicated respectively at 35 26 and 27, the buckles being secured to the ends of the front portion 10 and the stra 1 to the ends of the back portion 40. Th; body 10 is provided at its ends with ( la 28 and 29, as shown in Fig. 1, which area apt- 9o ed to extend over the joint between the front. and back portions of the sup ort. Formed through the body 10 at suita 10 points are eyelets 30 designed to receive the holding straps of the pads, and these eyelets may be as located at any desired portion of the body'of the device so that. the pad may be attached at any desired point and thus made to correspom to the condition of the patient, as hereinafter explained.
The pad portion of the improved "device may be of any required size and of any required shape, the shape and size being made to correspond to the condition of the patient. Some forms of disease require a large circu- 105 la! pad, other forms require small circular pads, and other forms require oblon Ol elliptical sha ed pads, and it is not desired therefore to imit this portion of the device to any particular shape or form. In Fig. 1 113 the location of an elongated pad is indica. in dotted lines at 31, while circular pads are" 1 indicated by dotted lines 32, to illustrate the fact that the pads may be employed wherever required and of any required shape.
The pads are. formed of an outer sheathing 33 of yieldable material, such as the fabric known as silk rubber or rubber gauze, and is drawn into pocket like form and supported with a .non-yieldable binding 34, the blnding being so arranged as to provide a casing having a contracted entrance so that. the pad propel; represented conventionally at 35,
may be'insert-ed through the contracted opening by distending the same, and held in position 'by the resiliency ot' the casing or closure, while :at the same time readily removable for renewal or cleansing. Each of the'pad portionsof the device is provided with tapes 37 ofsuitabla: it"tigth which are connected to the pads by st tching or other wise andfpassed outwardly through small aperturesin the'sheathing 33, the tape bein designed to pass through the eyelets and tied aslldhoivln in "Fig. 1, externally of the device.
Theft apes are preferably bent upon-themselves andfs'titehed or otherwise secured to the pads at the bends or bightportions oi .the tapes, thus'producing two free portions to he asscd'throngh the apertures of the 30 sheathing-:33. :f'By-t-his simple means, the improved devioelis readily adaptable to the condition oftlie'patient and the pads adapted to be connected-to the support -at any point, as before stated. The pad may be constructedof'any'sditable material and ma be'hardQFstSIEt as may be preferred, but
u'il geiiet'filly li df soft material, such as cotton, wool ofitlt like.
SuithhIe leg-stfaps'i zm are connected to the lower portion 'of anddepend from the device=to 'assist iii-propeFly securing thc'latter to the patient and for causing the same to correctly conform to the contour of 1... body at the point where the same is applied By the arrangement shown of the support in; strips, the lower portion of the device in strengthened and supported.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. In an ahdon'iinal supporter, an outer sheathing of yieldable material having a contracted inlet and with apertures near the inlet. a. pad within said sheathing and tapes connected to said pad and extending-through said sheathing apertures and providing means for attaching the sheathing and itsa pad to a supporter.
2. In .11. abdominal supporter, a sheathing of yicldable material having a contracted inlet, a binding of non-yieldable materiat surrounding said inlet, a pad within said sheathing, and means for detachably connecting said sl'ieathmg to a supporter.
3. An abdominal supporter consisting ofia front having stay strips at the ended-anal with diagonal stay strips extending between the end stay strips and the lower central} portion of the front, shorter stay strips connected to the front and extending between the diagonal strips and the bottom of thew front, a hack detaehably connected .with the t ends of the front" and having a plurality of vertically arranged spaced resilient strips secured thereto and'disposed centrally three: of, pads bearing, upon the front and means. 1 76
