ASHER D. BUBB,
OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DOCUMENT-FILE FOR D ESKS AND SAFES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER D, BUBB, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Document-Files for Desks and Safes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in document-files for desks and safes.
One object of this invention is to produce a file of the character indicated which can be removed with facility from a desk to a safe, or vice versa.
Another object is to provide a file of the character indicated which comprises a wooden case which is open at the top and has two laterally spaced side walls each whereof is provided at the inner side with grooves extending from the top of the wall to the bottom of the case and spaced longitudinally of the wall, each groove in each side wall being arranged laterally in line with and directly opposite a groove in the opposite side wall, and the said oppositely arranged grooves being adapted to receive a metal partition which can be readily transferred from any pair of oppositely arranged grooves to any other pair of oppositely arranged grooves.
Another object is to have the said side walls diverge from one end to the opposite end of the case so that the space between the said walls gradually increases in width toward the last-mentioned end from the firstmentioned end of the case and permits the formation of compartments varying in width and thereby forms a more desirable file for documents, cards, wrappers or papers varying in width.
With these objects in view, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a document-file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
My improved document-file for desks and safes comprises a box or case A which is preferably made of wood and is open at the Specification of Letters Patent.

top. The case A has two laterally spaced side walls 5 and 5 which diverge from one end of the case to the opposite end of the case so that the space between the said walls gradually increases in width toward the lastmentioned end of the case from the firstmentioned end of the case.
Each side wall 5 is provided at its inner side with substantially vertically arranged grooves 6 which extend downwardly from the top of the said wall to the bottom of the case, which grooves are spaced longitudinally of the said wall. Each groove 6 in each side wall 5 is arranged in line laterally with and directly opposite a groove in the opposite side wall, and the said oppositely arranged grooves are adapted to receive a removable partition B which can be readily transferred from any pair of oppositely arranged grooves to any other pair of oppositely arranged grooves.
The case illustrated is shown provided with two partitions B. One of the said partitions engages the two oppositely arranged grooves nearest one end of the case and the other of the said partitions engages the two oppositely arranged grooves nearest the other end of the case. A pack of documents or papers C is shown held against the adj acent end of the case by one of the said partitions.
A not unimportant feature of my invention is to have the side walls 5 diverge toward one end of the case and to have the distance between thepoints to which any two oppositely arranged grooves extend laterally into the said walls substantially equal to the distance between the points to which any other oppositely arranged grooves extend laterally into the said walls, so that a partition B, notwithstanding the divergence of the said walls, shall properly fit any oppositely arranged grooves. It will be observed therefore that the two oppositely arranged grooves which are farthest from the farther separated ends of the side walls 5 extend a greater distance laterally into the said walls than the remaining grooves; that the two oppositely arranged grooves which are nearest the said ends of the said walls do not extend as far laterally into the said walls as the other grooves, and that therefore the grooves of any intermediate pair of oppositely arranged grooves extend farther laterally into the said walls than any other groove which is nearer the said ends of the said walls and extend a less distance laterally into the said walls than any other groove which is farther from the said ends of the said walls.
What I claim is 1. A document-file for desks and safes, said file comprising a case which is open at the top and has two laterally spaced side walls which diverge toward one end of the case,'each side wall being provided at its inner side with grooves spaced longitudinally of the wall and extending downwardly from the top of the wall, each groove in each side wall being arranged in line laterally with and directly opposite a groove in the opposite side wall, and the distance between the points to which any two oppositely arranged grooves extend into the said walls being substantially equal to the distance between the points to which any other oppositely arrangedgrooves extend. into the said walls so that a partition inserted into any two oppositely arranged grooves shall notwithstanding the divergence of the two side walls properly fit any other oppositely arranged grooves;
2. A document-file for desks and safes, said file comprising a case which is open at the top and has two laterally spaced side walls which divergetoward one end of the case each side wall beingprovided at its inner side with grooves spaced longitudinally of the wall and extending downwardly from the top of the wall, eachtgroove in each side wall being arranged in line laterally with and directly opposite a groove Copies of this patentmay be obtained for in the opposite side wall, and the grooves of any intermediate pair of oppositely arranged grooves extending farther laterally into the side walls than any other groove which is nearer the farther separated ends of the said walls and extending a less distance laterally into the said walls than any other groove which is farther from the said ends of the said Walls.
3. A document-file for desks and safes, said file comprising a case which is open at the top and has two laterally spaced side walls which diverge from one end to the other end of the case, each side wall being provided at its inner side with substantially vertically arranged grooves spaced longitudinally of the said wall and extending from the top of the wall to the bottom of the case. e-achgroove in each side wall being arranged in line laterally with and directly opposite a groove in the opposite side wall, and any intermediate groove in each side wall extending laterally into the said wall farther than any other groove which is nearer the farther separated ends of the side walls and extending not as far laterally into the wall inwhich it is formed than any other groove which is farther from the said ends of the said walls.
In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two witnesses.
