of Montclair, in the count of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Valv, of
' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly and generally to new and useful improvements in valves, and more particularly to valves of 'that character or type'known as t plugs, in which a valve body provided with a suitable passage or port is rotatably mount-ed in a seat and is adapted to be rotated relative to a orted casingor conduit to control a ow therethrough, the flow being established when'the ports in the valve body and the casing are,brought into communication and discontinued when the communication is broken. In all prior constructions of which I am aware it has been diiiicult to produce a satisfactory valve proof againstleakage for the reason that uneven wear exists between the valve and its 'seat which destroys a close fit between the parts and causes leakage, particularly when the body is operated to cut oit the iow.
` This ob]ection has been due largely to the fact that the operating stems of the valve body have been so connected thereto that any tendency to deflect the stem from its proper Aposition when operating it, would cause a corresponding greater pressurebetween the valve and its seat at one point, causing greater wear of the parts at that .point, destroying the required fit between the valve and its seat vand resulting in leakage.
It is, therefore, the object of my invention to provide a novel form of connection between the `valve body and its operating means, whereby the valve when once adjusted or fitted to its seat, will not be dis'-V turbed so as to destroy its proper tit, should the valve stem be deiiected during the ope'ration of the valve.
The invention consists in the improvements to be fully described hereinafter and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.

, Rotatably Seated in the tapering seat 3, and tapered to correspond thereto so as to closely it said seat at all points, is a valve b0dy or plug 8, formed with a transverse opemng or passage 9 adapted to be brought into communication with the nipples 2, 2 to permit flow from one nipple to the other through the valve casing. It will be understood that the sides of the plug which bound the 'paage 9 are adapted, upon rotation of the said plug, to be brought mto position to close the pa through the valve casing to cut oif ow m one nipple to the other. The lower end of the valve body 'projects into the pocket 7, and when first fitted into place isspaced from the bottom of said pocket so that as the seat and valve wear the latter may have clearance -to permit itto settle closely to the seat and thereby insure a close fit at all n Extending through the bonnet 6 and in longitudinal alinement with' the valve body 8 is the valve operating member shown in the form of a stem 10 adapted to be operated by means of a hand lever 11 rigidly secured to the end of said stem exterior to the valve casing. Suitable means may be employed for 'packing the stem as, for instance, a packing washer or ring 12, surrounding the stem and'arran ed between a iange 13 in the neck 14 of the onnet, and a packin rounding the stem and threaged onto the neck of the bonnet. Means is rovided for connecting vor coupling the va ve body or nut 15 surplug and this member 10 in such a manner as to permit relative lateral movement of the stem to the valve plug, said coupling be; ing flexible in nature and effect when the stem is moved laterally relative to the valve body, but adapted upon rotation to positively'rotate the valve. I will now describe the embodiment which I have illustrated fo accomplishing the resultlstated. 1

In order to maintain proper interengagement of the coupling members 'at all timesV and to forcibly urge the valve body to its gaat, I provide an expansive coil spring 23,
mounted on the valve Vstein andV exerting its force expansively against the head ofl the bonnet and the head 16 to'thrust the stem toward the valve body into engagement with -mg member being slidable transversel the block or post 22, and thereby urge the valve to its seat.
I preferably, although not necessarily, form the -valve body of a composition of bakelite, vulcanized asbestos and graphite, molded into the desired shape, and secure the head 20 thereto by anchoring arms 2l, which are anchored in the valve when the latter is molded, all arranged `as shown clearly in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The invention will be found desirable in that it provides for a ready assemblage of the parts without the necessityof any particular adjustment to insure theproper fit of the valve to its seat, as the valve may be dropped or placed into its seat and the stem interengaged therewith, a deflection of the stem from exact alinement with the valve in no way disturbing the latter and at the same time a proper connection being provided between the parts. u
