EMMET A. ROWE, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
WASI-IBOARD ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
Application led August 15, 1910. Serial No. 577,225.
To al whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMET A. RowE, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashboard Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wash-boards, referring particularly to an attachment for holding the wash-board firmly in the tub.
An object of this invention is to provide a detachable and adjustable frame for application to wash-boards of common construction, the frame being adaptable to Wash tubs varying in size and resting against the inner walls and upon the bottom thereof to hold the wash-board from moving up and down during the rubbing action upon the same.
rlhe invention further contemplates the provision of an adjustable frame of this character which is simple, efficient, and which can be quickly adjusted to stationary or portable tubs'of angular orround form and of practically any size.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved frame as applied to a wash-board and positioned within a round tub. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one side of the frame, partly in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the attachment comprises a substantially U-shaped frame consisting of opposed angle-bars having overlapping end-sections 10 and 11 provided with registering apertures 12. A clamping bolt 13 passes through the apertures 12 and carries a binding nut 14 against the outer face of the section 10. Guide sleeves 15 encircle the sections 1() and 11 and are fixed upon the outer ends -of the sections 10 and 11 by rivets16. The sections 10 and 11 of the angle-bars constitute the end-bars of the frame and the opposite members 17 form the inner sections of the side-bars of the frame. The sections 17 have spaced notches 18 in their upper edges and carry guiding sleeves 19 secured to the outer ends by rivets 20. Outer side-bar sections 21 slidably engage against the outer faces of the sections 17 and pass loosely through the sleeves 19. The sect-ions 21 carry sleeves 22 secured upon their inner ends by rivets 23 encircling the sections 17. U-shaped locking clips 24 are carried by the sections 21 and have inwardly extending arms 25 hinged upon the outer ends of t-he rivets 23. Transverse locking bolts 26 are carried through the clips 24 for engagement in the notches 18. The sections 21 are provided in their upper edges with notches 27 for the recept-ion of locking bolts 26 when the notches 27 register with the notches 18. The outer extremities of the sections 21 are preferably corrugated as at 28, or otherwise r-.oughened to bind against the inner wall of the tub 29,
The numeral 30 designates a wash-board of any adaptable form', the conventional form being disclosed in the drawing, having the depending legs 31 upon the lower ends of which are attached the sections 21. Detachable bolts 32 engage through the outer ends of the sections 21 and through the lower ends of the legs 31 to hinge the frame against the under side of the wash-board 30.
The clamping bolt 13 is employed for holding the sections of the frame when adjusted to accommodate the width of the wash-board 30. The frame, when used, is first secured to the wash-board 30 and is then placed in the tub to rest upon the bottom of the same. The hinged locking clips 24 are raised from the notches 27 and 18 and the waslrboard 30 is pushed forwardly to engage the extremities 28 of the sections 21 against the inner wall of the tub 29. The end-bar of the frame is pushed by hand against the opposite wall of the tub 29 when the locking clips 24 are swung downwardly to engage the locking bolts 26 in the registering notches 27 and 18.
Having 3thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a washboard, spaced and adjustable side-bars hinged upon the lower end of the wash-board, and an adjustable cross-bar carried across the outer ends of the side-bars.
2. A supporting frame for a wash-board including spaced sectional sidewbars, the inner ends of the sections of the side-bars overlapping and having registering notches, sleeves encircling the overlapping ends of the sections, locking clips hinged upon the sleeves and engaging in the registering notches, and an adjustable end-bar carried across the outer ends of the side-bars.
3. In combination With a Wash-board, a pair of adjustable side-bars detachably and hingedly connected to the lower end of the Wash-board, and an end-bai1 secured across the outer ends of the side-bars, said side-bars and end-bar each comprising overlapping sections having loops engaging about their overlapping portions, and locking clips engaging through the loops and against the adjacent sections.
4. A Washboard attachment including an expansible clamping frame adjustably carried upon the Washboard, said 'frame being j adapted for binding engagement in a tub.
5. In combination with ay tub and a Washboard Within the tub, an adjustable frame resting upon the bottom of the tub and bind- Copies of thisipatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
