Letters Patent No. 100,239, dated February 22, 1870.
IMPRQVEMENT IN PRESSURE-BLOWERS.
che-sexcam :ermee tp m umm. and; same.,
Tonll whom itmcy concern .9
Be it known that I, l. RSTUnTEvANT, of Jamaica Plain, in the county' of' Nox-lilik, and State of' Massachusetts, have invented ,Improvements in Pressurellilowers; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accom pany and f'orm partof' this specification, is a description' of my invention suficient to enable those skilled infthe art tg practice it. I
This invention consists in a' peculiar form of case, which may be described asa scroll or spiral pipe, the dross-sections ot' which, on planes radiating from the center of' the wheelshaft, start from and terminate o irpamllelf iesl square or at rightI angies to the artis of' ftli eel, the scroll-pipe being open ou its ionersidea oiitone third of' its circumference, the
said pipedecreasiug uniformly in sizeof' cross-sectionI fronrtlie area of the deliveryLpipe to the small end of' the' pipe, which must be of sutcientarea to be wider at the opening of' its circumference than the width ot' the'blower-wheel at its periphery.
For small blowers, l make the case whole by castingor by brazing or solderiiur sheet metaltogether.
For blowers ot'- medium s'ze, I make the case in twoparts, preferably cas-tand joined in the central plane of the blower passing midway between 'the planes beiore mentioned; and for large blowers, l make thc rase of segments olf the scroll.
My invention further consists in the combination, with a case having therein a wheel in the peripheral shrouding of which the air-outlet is'made by a series of' suitable holes or openings, of' screens ot' wire cloth or perforated material in or over the air-inlets of the blowerto prevent passage into the blast-wheel of obf `iects 'larger than can pass freely through the outletopenings made in the .said wheel.
liy'invention liu-ther consists in a' pecuiiarit-y ol detail -by which the journals ofthe wheel-shaft are nnifhrmly 'lubricated throughout their length, said pe'cnliarity consisting in making between the box,
which has capability for universal motion to a limited negrce, and the bushing which is held by said box, a cluunber cinnmnnicating with au oil-reservoir, the bushing being pierced with holes along its length and vthe holes being plugged with leather or other porous neiterial, through which the o il liltcrs in passing to he journal surfaces.
And my invention consists further in certain other peculiarities of' arrangemei-it and combination which will be described and sct l'orthin the description which iollows,in which reference is -had to the drawings, which show a pressure-blower embodyingr my invention.
.ln said drawings-M -Fi fuite l is a vorticaisection of m im ro H The flat-surfaced rings a a are parallel. to each other, and in planes at right angles to the axis ofy shalt b, and make seats that can be easily faced utf to receive the side disk plates c, which are also faced.`
where they join upon the rings a a.
".lhe pipe, which-is of` a scroll or spiral form, is so made that-it constantiy increases in diameter and area from the line c z, lig. .3, to where it arrives at the l'ull size of' the outlet-pipe d, the scroll pipe bring open l near and around the fan-wheel periphery and its cross- -se'cr-ions ending upon the rings a t' The disk plates c have large central openings which are bordered with T-shaped grooves seen at e, lig. l,
'in which grooves lit the rings f of` the spider arms g,
which terminate in hubs h, which sustain the boxes i for the shaft journals Land in said grooves are placed the heads ol' the bolts'1c,'wbich hold the arms g in any desired angular ,position to accon'nuodate each belt which passcsover each side of an arm, y, on eachside of` the blower upon the driving pulleys l, there'being preferably two, one at each-side of' the blower.
The rings f serve alsoto clamp and confine disks of wire cloth or perforated material, m, to ,thc plates c over the inlet openings to theblower formed-centrally throughthe'disk plates c.
The hubs h are bored to receive the boxes fi, which have foriued'there'on a portion of a spherical bearing,
v the. followers n-being screwed 'into' the hubs h, against the spherical projections from boxes@ to prevent endwise movement of' the boxes and ,to sustain them in position in which 'thcyhave acapacity for universal motion to a small but suicient extent to bring both boxes intov line with eacli-other.
lhe'box'es t are provided with loil cups or reservoir o, and the sleeves or bushings p, lit at their ends in the boxes i, but the bodies -ot' the bushings are made of' less diametcrthan the bore ot' the boxes, so as to form ,between the boxes and the bushings annular i chambers communicating with theioil cups o.
Along thelength ofthe small part ot' the bushings p small holes. are bored at intervals, and are filled with plugs, q, of leather or other suitable, porous material,
through which the oil tilters as it pereolates througlr the plugs in obtaining access to the journals j. I prcl'er to nut-thread said' holes so that the plugs q can be screwed and listed therein.
The lan-wheel shal't is prevented from having' cndstinent ofthe screws r iu the ends of' the -bushin f 1 i On the shaft b are two hubs, arms from which snstain rings s, whirll'are angularV in eross-secti0n. To one flange ot' each ring is united a. disk, t, and the peiipheries ot the diskst t are united by a beltor hand, fu, of werfoiufited` metal. The other flanges of the rings s abutagaiust the inner surfaces of the side plates c, so that all the. air passing through the screens on fm, enters ithe fau-wheel, which revolves freely in the chamber made b v the side plates c and delivers said air in to the scroll-pipe of' the ease..
The. fan blades 'v are att: cied io the housings t u e,
and are braced by arms proceeding from a central hub or shalt, b.
`i elaini a blower ease made with ase-roll or'spiral airpassage beginning and endingon parallel planes whirlf are square or at right. angles with the axis of the blast-wheel shaftand open to rereire air troni the fan wheel and to eondurt it through a constantly-iuereasing passage to the outlet for the blower.
Also, tlmhlast-whrel made with a fiati-perforated shrouded ring 1l uniting the side shrondings t t.
Also, the arrangement, 'with the -described voiute blower-ease of side plates c, with eireularjoint edges. Also, the arrangement, -n'ith 'a :"anorheel, haring screens m, t'or the purpose described.
Also, the arms g, whiehsupport the hub h, united lby a ring fittingl into the groove in the side of. the v blower for adjusting the arms with reference to the belt. v
Also, the screw-threaded holes in the bushings p, combined with plugs or` fillings 'ot' leather screwed therein. Also, the improved blower, consisting ot' the peruliar scroll-shaped case, provided with screened side openings and containing a fan-wheel haring a pei-thrated peripheral shrouding so mounted as to be freely rotated within the ease.
Also, a blower-ease nia-de up of dishing side plate as shown, to give side chamber room for the blastuheel, surrounded b v a scroll-shapedchamber whit-h receives and conveys th'eair from the. blast-wheel when made circular in planes which are radial i'rolu the ceuter of the blast-wheel. Y
