VALVE-ACTUATING DEVICE FOR RADIATORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLERY L. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Actuating Devices for Radiators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of this character with means whereby the attachment may be readily adjusted in position to suit the various sizes of radiators and hold an operating rod in place for regulating the controlling-valve of the radiator, without stooping to bring the hand close to said valve.
My invention consists of an operating rod for connection with the stem of the controlling-valve of a radiator, and an adjustable bracket for holding said rod in place, said bracket having means to permit of being clamped in position upon the radiator.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a radiator provided with my improved device for operating the controlling-valve. Fig. 2 is a plan of the bracket as applied to a radiator. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clamping means of the device, and, Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the socket-piece, of the operating rod, applied to the valve-stem.

The radiator r is of any well-known construction, having a series of sections, as r 1; a controlling-valve at the base of the radiator, as at s, and the stem 8 of said valve squared, as at s in Fig. 4, for connection with the common hand-wheel (not shown).
Ordinarily the operator must stoop to operate the controlling-valve, with the result that he is liable to be burned by coming in contact with the adjacent part of the radiator. In carrying out my invention I provide a long operating rod a, on one end of which is secured a sleeve (1 by means of a pin a and this sleeve has an aperture to fit the squared portion 8 of the valve-stem s and on the other end of said rod is made fast a hand-wheel a whereby the operation of the valve .3 is made very easy and readily efiected.
The operating rod a is held in position by Specification of Letters Patent.

The member 6* is an angle piece, one portion of which extends vertically against the outer face of the crossbar b and the other portion projects horizontally therefrom, and this angle member is secured to said bar 7) by a bolt 6, which passes through the slotted opening 0 and a nut e on said bolt holds said member 6 firmly in place upon said bar 72 in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
The member 6 is secured upon the horizontal portion of the angle member 6*, by a bolt f which passes through a slotted open ing 0 formed in said member 6', and a nut f on said bolt holds the member firmly in place upon said angle member, and said member 6 bends to a quarter turn forwardly of the angle member 5*, to form a hook, as at 79 which acts as a bearing for the upright operating rod a.
By use of a long operating rod to engage the valve-stem, as described, the handwheel a is located at the top of the radiator where there is no liability of burning the hand when operating the controlling-valve, and at the same time this operating member be ing separate from the valve-stem lessens the cost in this part of the device, over the case wherein the valve-stem extends direct to the top of the radiator for operating said valve. The members Z2 b are resilient to permit their free ends to spring in contact upon the radiator.
By having the V-shaped members if, b and hook member 6 slidable upon the device, the said former members 6 b may be readily brought to engage the sides of the radiator and held in place by the jam-nuts 03 al and the said latter member If brought to support the operating rod and held in place by the jam-nut f By my construction and arrangement of parts it is evident I provide a device of this character that is simple, durable, is easily applied to a radiator, and inexpensiy e to manufacture. e What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A radiator and its controlling-valve having an upright rotatable valve-stem at the base of the radiator, an operating rod having one end provided with means to turn the valve-stem and its other end provided with a hand-wheel; a bracket comprising a slotted bar, V-shaped resilient members slidable upon said bar and designed to spring in contact upon the sides of the radiator, an angle piece secured to said bar, a slotted hook member slidable on said angle piece and designed to hold the rod in position, and
bolts passing through the slots of said bar and said hook member, each bolt provided with a jam-nut.
2. A radiator and its controlling-valve having an upright rotatable valvestem Whose outer portion is squared, a manuallyoperated upright rod having a sleeve made fast thereon, said sleeve provided with an aperture to fit the squared port-ion of the valve-stem; a bracket having two slidable members to hold by frictional contact against the sides of the radiator, and a slidable member provided With a bearing to receive the upper portion of the operating rod, and clamping bolts for securing said slidable members firmly in position.
